Info concerning the "Bishop Creek Dam". The dam was built in 1922. The Lovelock lawsuit wasn't about the dam, but (naturally) the water. As a result, the water going to Metropolis was limited, far less than what the town needed. The dam was not removed but remained in use. The dam wasn't deactivated until 1984, when the gates were removed, allowing the Bishop Creek to flow freely through it. The dam remains to this day, 7.5 miles east of Metropolis, at GPS 41.2553 -114.9162. Looks rather impressive on Google Earth. There are no roads to the dam and it is located on private property, according to one website I read.

I have Beautiful pictures of the mountain dusted with a bit of snow and the clouds with a gorgeous sunset. I missed the visitor log and the cemetery though. So sad. Roads were great to get to it. The aerial drone shots at this ghost town on googie earth are amazing! The first settlers here killed all the coyotes and the jackrabbit population increased so much that farming here went to hell. A relentless drought ended all hopes after than as nothing grew there afterwards. Superman couldn't save this metropolis. Great cemetery to visit there. Could be going to twelvemile spring next?
Holes are in the brick so mortar will create a stronger bond when it's pressed down. Then when a wall is torn down, mostly likely the brick will become unusable. Another reason for holes today.
It would be very interesting to find someone who lived there and talk with them about the town. It is amazing how fast we disappear after abandonment. Thanks for this gem WH!!

11:52 the "central tower" was the vaults for the hotel, the upper one was on main floor of hotel, the lower was in the basement. If you had looked carefully those alcoves in the basement still had block glass and cement ceiling, which was the sidewalk around the building.
At 7:33 " a little bit of tile that's pretty fancy for 1910" ---- The had tile like that 2,000 years ago in the Roman Empire. Las Vegas was originally a Mormon town, as were many other towns out west.

They're still made that way today, and the holes are used one of two ways; In light load bearing walls it allows the mortar to run through the brick, locking them into place as it hardens. In heavy duty load bearing walls, mortar and rebar are fed through the bricks to reinforce the walls. While not as common today as they were 80 years ago, being usurped by concrete cinder blocks, they're still made and used today for various projects.

Would there be classrooms below ground level? I suppose that is possible since there are window openings. Kind of like split level homes. The other possibility would be the structure is sinking. (Or Sank). That would explain why the rest of the building is gone. Earthquake? It may already be in the comments but I get overwhelmed reading them all. Wonder if the tower structure would have been part of the fire escape system. Not sure what the fire codes were back in those days. I have seen buildings from that time period that had the fire escapes, they resembled large slides. Once you got on you rode them down to the ground level.

There was a 6.0 earthquake near there in 2008 - six miles northeast of Wells. That might have caused some of the damages.

YES, that's how they made bricks back then. Also the twisted steel bars are rebar. That's how it was deformed so concrete would adhere to it.....
