Matt and Rob from Mantic Games are in the studio to talk about how new players might get started with Kings of War.
Gerry talks to the guys from Mantic for those who might not know where to start if they feel like dipping their toe into rank and flank games. A good first step though is in the new edition of the Kings of War rulebook which contains everything you might need from army lists to narrative information.

Never heard of Kings of War before, looking forward to it!!
This has got to be one of the best fantasy wargames out there I've already bought built and painted a dwarven army and my next one is going to be orcs I've just got the mega army box set plus a giant which looks fantastic
I need a new Kings of War starter, because next year is the biggest national KoW Tournament 2020 in Germany near Cologne and I need new stuff to start together with my son. 💪

Wish I has more local distribution of Mantic's ranges, would love to dive into some undead to diversify Warcry and other skirmish games.
Loving the look of Kings of War, big big fan of the Northern Alliance. The starter set looks like a fantastic way to get into the game at a reasonable cost. Something I appreciate yet isn't applicable for myself is that they have added the supplement for the droves of folks who have old Warhammer fantasy armies can dust them off and play with them again. Kudos to Mantic.
I wasn't sure if Shaodws in the North was where I wanted to start my collection, but that small rulebook seems like such a good tool for bringing my friends into the game.
finally glad that some detail about what "master lists" and "themes" are in 3rd.. kinda wish they'd gone into more detail on how they work though. guess we have ot wait for the previews of the armies of pannithor book
@Gerry mcCabe which worked in historical because it was literally just one big master list of units that everyone picked from, with the different themes just limiting your choices. KoW3.0 has multiple lists of elves and dwarves and goblins and so on, meaning the historical "single master list" approach can't be how it works.
As an old Fantasy Battles player, I've been looking for a good entry point into this game. I think the time has come!

Would love to start this system, looks fun and love the multi base look.
I am all about adding more units to my existing Trident Realm army (Dambusters, Greater Water elementals, Leviathans' Banes). Also new Abyssal Dwarf plastics might be a reason to add more units to my First Love - abyssal dwarfs as well.
Really interested to see this played.
I have about £500 worth of ‘still in shrink wrapped boxes’ mint state bone rattle skeletons, grave guard, black knights, undead hounds and associated heroes. All I need is a good fantasy rules set to gain the inspiration to get building and painting them! KoW might just be that inspiration......
sounds like you have a good start for an Undead Army.
I am fascinated by these rules but as a largely historical player I am still unsure whether to buy this ruleset

It's the most balanced rank and flank game out there with clear and concise rules and it's fast! (2 hours per 2000pt game is the average. We spend less than that in tournaments)
I'm thinking of getting a starter army ! not quite made up my mind as yet but with 3rd edition coming soon I thought it would be a good time to check it out!
I rather like the look of both armies. This seems like a great entry point for Kings of War!
I am really excited for these. Especially since the Northern Alliance is possibly my favorite army.
@Gerry mcCabe I love Vanguard. I always love armies that have somewhat interesting lore. Northern Alliance seems that way.

I've got an old WHFB High Elves army I may multibase up but my heart calls to the dwarves.
I must admit I'll be looking forwards to fielding my Basileans or my Dwarfs again once this new rulebook lands :).
i'm actually planning to switch my Vikings Army i was working on to Northern Alliance..
Hey Gerry, do you know if there will be a 'ravaging hordes' type list available to cover the 2nd edition armies not released in the main rule book, or will I have have to wait until December for Uncharted Empires to be released to field my KoM or Varangur?

I've got a community near me that's pushing me to join them, and it's tempting, but I've got a few big questions. One: What are the play-styles of the armies and general tactics? I cannot find a good source for this anywhere! Second: How would Monsterpocalypse Miniatures work? Monsterpocalypse is a Giant Monsters miniatures game, the only one I know of, but it uses 30 mm and 60 mm square bases, and checking the online store reveals that practically nothing uses that exact size of base; they're all smaller or larger. I love the minis deeply, and you'd have to pry them away from my cold, dead hands.
Check out Mastercrafted channel. They have a few videos of the armies and their typical play styles. That said, most armies can be played in a variety of ways (shooty, mixed arms, alpha strike, MSU). No worries on the scale of the models as long they represent a unit. If the models are bigger, they can be large infantry instead of regular infantry or even monsters

Thank you Gerry, I used to play warhammer fantasy, with nice square bases and movement trays, would I be able to adapt my Vampire Counts?
KoW Undead basically is Vampire Counts in terms of unit types available. obviously the fluff is different. :)
Yes, they basically have a convertible army of each WHFB army.
Hmm... I wonder if my landsknecht (so, mostly human, mostly pikeblocks) could be adapted?
yes. they'd fit as either Kingdoms of Men or League of Rhordia, both of which will appear in the Armies of Pannithor Suppliment.

@@andreaspersson5639 You'll probably like it more than WHFB because I I definitely do.
I use a Perry Miniatures Hundred Years War army with the Frost Grave plastic Wizards box set as my Riflemen units, Mantic Ogres, Mantic Undead, Mantic Orcs, and Fire Forge Brotherhood.
You seem to think it would be hard for me to like something more than GW (hint: it's not hard, it's rather easy) ;)
My landsknecht would be Warlord Games, although with some of them painted in a more wizardly fashion (which may or may not be augmented/replaced with Frostgrave).
This looks really good! I have not played KoW. What army list would fit my Bretonnians from Warhammer Fantasy?
@Gerry mcCabe Brotherhood is apparently going to be split off into two lists in 3rd.. one a more mundane troopsfocused list based off the basileans, the other a more magic focused version based off the Forces of nature. (apparently the Brotherhood split after events in one of the 2nd ed campaign books).
the magic focused one, the order of the Green lady, has been hinted at being the most 'breetonian'.

@@danbuman8422 Might add the Brotherhood list in 2ed is very obvious the Breonninas. You can very easily see which unit is suppose to be which from WFB. (Almost comical when I noticed it). ^^

I don’t like that the content of the starter box isn’t shown any were on their web site. It’s like to see all things things that are suppose to be in the box.

yes like get some new un deed and make em glow in dark be so much fun and like get a lot of the scar crows with great jakolant heeds thay look good and last the one thing like get are amzons but thay do not have em have get nuns thay got give a littl more raviling paint job will see as thay post
I would love to start Kings of War but the dwarf army is too ugly… A single guy in Spain ( MOM miniatures) blows them out of the water 😂.
If they collaborated I would never look at GW again…
then buy those and use them instead...
