Man I love No One Lives Forever, its up there with the best fps games ever made in my opinion and my favourite in the genre. The charm, gameplay, weapons, music everything just hits the mark. Thank you for making this, the more attention this game gets the better. Its such a shame that the rights are lost within 3 of the most greedy publishers that don't give a shit about quality games. I would love to see this series come back one day. Monolith's masterpiece next to F.E.A.R.
It's so tragic that the people who could bring this back don't care to. Every time someone suggests a female James Bond, my first thought is, "But Cate Archer is Right There!"
This is quite honestly my favorite game of all time and I still play it with the very very tiny group of players we still have. I was completely crushed when they had to break the bad news. I've never been more upset at video game related news. Not cool Warner Brothers, not cool 😔 I don't even need a 3rd installment, I just want a remaster and for more people to play again 😭
Growing up loving Golden Eye and Time Splitters.... WHERE WAS THIS GAME?!?! Seriously, thank you for sharing this. I've never heard of this game but it looks amazing! And would have loved it back in 2000.
The first game is available on Playstation 2. However, the PC versions have nicer graphics. However, it's still worth playing the Playstation 2 version since it contains exclusive Playstation 2 flashback levels (about 3 or 4 of them).
NoLF and it's sequel were two of the best games I ever played on the PC, and the first time I ever had to go crazy tweaking graphic settings and even upgrading my PC to run the sequel. I went out of my way to ensure I could play both these games, THAT's how good they were. This along with Shogo: MAD, Clive Barker's Undying, and who knows how many other great games, have pretty much been forgotten, abandoned, and it's just really damned depressing, and kind of insulting too. The only major issue with NoLF 1 and 2, is how difficult the games could be at points...but yeah, both games are very worth your time gamers.
I enjoyed this game more than I did half life, call me a son of a gun. Absolutely everything draws you in to the world of NOLF - the characters, the dialogue, the environments, the gadgets, the level design and ingenuity. Sound effects. So many memorable moments like jumping without a parachute, the sinking ship, the night club, the train, the safe and lasers.. even a space station to name a few! Sneaking and hiding bodies or putting in those phosphorus rounds and playing around with many of the cool weapon and gadgets. The boss fights. James bond-esque tutorials. The secret items you could find. Just so much content and fantasy.
One of the games that marked my childhood... Monolith was incredible back at the day, Shogo, NOLF, NOLF2 and FEAR, they spitted new ideas and brands every each year like a gattling gun... it was a surprise one after another... An incredible game studio that not a lot of people talk so much today (enclosured in IP hell from Warner Brothers)... I wish they regain this freedom in the future, so we may see what else they could bring to the table with modern technology...
5:43 I never knew why sometimes the trajectory of that falling animation was perfectly smooth and sometimes it was "on steps" like on the video. It was even more noticeable on the next scene with the barnyard when cates "turns" directions, either instantly or with a smooth 2 second turn.
I got stuck at the laser room for two months or so. I even managed to reach the end of the room a few times only to find out that it is locked. What a heartbreak it was to later find out that there is a simple floor panel you can get through before the room. Good times.
so glad you made a video on this series. the fox and both of her adventures are still some of my favorite gaming memories. i loved this games unapologetic camp.
@@paulrobison2366 Remember the forgotten 2004 light gun rail shooter for arcades by Play Mechanix/ICE called Action Hero (aka Johnny Nero: Action Hero).
I loved these games and I agree that it's very sad we most probably won't get to see a new NOLF, there is so much potential in this IP it's insane that it's abandoned like this.
So glad I found you Rox, because you make some unbelievable content. I love your Forgotten Gems series, because you really go in depth for each of the games you mention, to the point that it's just fascinating. Keep it up, and thanks for showing us some games that have been mostly forgotten!
Thank you for mentioning the NOLF revival project. I tried to install NOLF 2 from the discs on my system several months back and it errored halfway through.
#GemSuggestion - Azrael's Tear. A textbook example of a forgotten gem. A game that did Thiefs atmosphere before Thief. It's cast has dinosaurs, templars and futuristic grave robbers equipped with high tech gear, but the story is mature and well written. It's gameplay is like realMyst with a tiny bit of action and platforming elements. It has richly written and voiced dialogs with deep characters with different agendas. Dialog system is pretty interesting btw - other than usual branching dialog player also often gets an option to question characters. The questions are the same for each dialog and they are based on things player have witnessed or read about in varios documents scattered around. But characters wont have time or patience for every question, so the player is forced to think carefully about what he can learn from certain character (for that player has to understand characters roles and motivations and relations between them) and also not to ask something that can get him killed. Also nonlinearity is handled quite subtly for the most part (a bit more obvious at the final act though), something that modern adventure game devs should learn how to do imo. Oh, and visuals for 1996 are jawdropping It's a bit of a trouble to run this game though, but I could help set it up or maybe email you my setup or something. Also I highly suggest to get it's design document - pretty good read. If pitched today it would make one epic vr multiplayer experience I think.
Not only is Cate Archer one of my favorite video game protagonists of all time, but NOLF is easily one of my favorite FPS series. I'd really love for there to be a similar series, replete with lighthearted tone, tongue in cheek humor and wonderful artistic sensibility. Doubt I'll ever live to see it.
The revival project is a bless :D Awesome video! Thank you for sharing and bringing back the Nostalgia. As for #gemsuggestion I'll leave here 5 of my fav when looking back through nostalgia: * Freelancer (quite known game from 2003, but also seems to be in publisher hell) * Startopia (SF+Economic Sim+Comedy+awesome gameplay, from 2001 one of the first 3D economic sim I played and so few ppl know of it) * FutureCop LAPD (1998 arcade/fun mech game with the first DOTA-like style multiplayer ever) * Sacrifice (Action+RTS+Comedy from 2000) * Scrapland (Comedy+SF+Robots+Action+Arcade Ship Combat+SemiOpenWorld game from 2004 made my American McGee, also lost in publisher hell it seems)
I know that point and click games are a big diversion from stuff you usually cover in this series, but boy if any game deserves title of a forgotten gem it is Neverhood, really unique game way ahead of its time in many aspects that nobody is talking about. Also, soundtrack of that game is propably my favourite score for any game of all time. Keep up with a good work, cheers.
A shame that his spiritual successor Armikrog tried to bring some what made Neverhood so special back at that time and people just passed by that game, both are really cool games even if Armikrog doesnt live up so much to what Neverhood is its a very decent game.
Dazdigo The 2006 game definitely isn’t forgotten lol. I know this was 2 years ago, but Prey 2017 came out that year and even then The cancelled Prey 2 was well known.
The Spyro series is one that was blasphemed against after the original trilogy. We'll never see another good Spyro game again and it sincerely upsets me, the first game had such a profound impact on me as a child.
This one hit the nostalgia button at full speed. I only had a chance to play the second game and whilst flawed, it was still tons of fun. Thanks of reminding me of the good times....
Ooooo I LOVED these games! I’m so sad that they are unlikely to ever get a rerelease or a third instalment ☹️ I’d love to play them again! They were one of the first FPS games I ever played that weren’t Star Wars games. Oo I should have known there was a fan remaster, I’m going to have to look that up 😁
Ragnar you've gotta play Pathologic, it's a Russian developed First-Person Horror game with some pseudo-surreal elements and it's amazingly ahead of it's time when it comes the the game mechanics they implemented. Super good plot and tone made all the way back in 2005. Very interesting game, to say the least.
I finally got around to playing both a couple years back and they were great. A good sense of humor and actually interesting progression of levels. I do agree that the gameplay can be highly frustrating at times though. It would be amazing to see a game like this with modern systems.
Man, I can remember the day I got NOLF. I was at GameStop with my mother, she said we could get a game, just one of course, and there I was. Walking down the PS2 section and saw the cover of this game I've never heard or seen before. I picked it up, examined the front and back, admiring the way Cate was trying her best not to be heard or seen by the thug standing in the hall. After reading the back I was pretty much sold into wanting it. My mother bought it, and the rest is pretty much history. I still own that copy of my NOLF, anyone else notice that certain games had that 'gold' back? Some PS2 games even had blue ones, like Tekken Tag Tournament and even Frogger's Great Quest. (I could be wrong, but I remember it having a blue back instead of a standard black one). The only other games I can recall having a gold back was Jak and Daxter, I'm sure there's more, but again, cannot remember. Anyways, I've rambled on long enough. Point is, I love this game and it was a part of my gaming life growing up. :)
Yeeessssss!!! This is one of my favorite games, I played it over and over again as a teenager, especially the cat burglar scenes!!! So happy to see it get some love :)
#gemsuggestion How about Arx Fatalis? It was one of (if not the) first game made by Arkane Studios, prior to the Bethesda purchase. Like the original Witcher, it got overlooked by competing titles like Neverwinter Nights, TES3, and a few others. This was a hidden gem even in 2002, surely that makes it worthy of this series?
I love this game, although I didn't grow up with it like most people did. When I was a kid, I was addicted to watching video game walkthroughs on gameanyone and I stumbled upon this game and was instantly hooked. I never played it due to my suckiness in shooters.
Great vid. All I can say is thank god my parents didnt throw out my original disc when I was a kid (they did get rid of the box unfortunantly) as I revisit this game at least twice a year.
#GemSuggestion Severance: Blade of Darkness seems like an appropriate one, considering it's basically a souls-like game that came out good 8 years before Demon's Souls did. NetStorm is another curious title back from '97, it did RTS in its own original way, that hasn't really been repeated since afaik.
12:22 - YES! I have always said that No One Lives Forever would be perfect as an immersive sim. Nice to see I'm not the only one :) Given that this will likely be stuck in IP hell until the end of time, I wish someone would just make a spiritual successor, call it "Evil Never Dies", hire Cate Archer's voice actor, and give her a new identity for some plot-related reason.
All of the NOLF game series are available for download from unityhq.net. The installers have been digitally signed to prevent tampering of the files. The UHQ site has been a NOLF game series community site since 2003 and in addition to the free downloads of all 3 games has an extensive collection of custom maps and mods for all three games.
Great video! I really miss this game! A #gemsuggestion I have would be Shiny Entertainment's 'Sacrifice' (2000). It was so innovative in its approach to RTS gameplay; and featured RPG elements years before Warcraft 3. It also had great voice acting, and a charming world that had bizarre visuals, but took itself seriously
Funnily enough, I actually found out about this game via an old fanmade series someone made that thought on what if Cate Archer and Lara Croft met, which ended up developing into a whole series made mainly on The Sims. This started.........somewhere in the late 2010's which sounds very recent, but man was that so long ago to me that I was still in secondary school ahahah but this video itself reminded me of that series, still up but unlisted on their channel although they made a playlist for it but Imma go have a nostalgia trip with it ahahahhah
I played this growing up instead of Half Life, so this is the one that gets my nostalgia going when it comes to old FPS games. I'd love to see someone reboot this but combine it with Archer at the same time.
#gemsuggestion Demon's Crest. The atmosphere this game immerse you has no equal. The beautifully detailed pixel graphics, the dark and eerie soundtrack, the well-designed metroidvania mechanics, the joyful sound effects, the open space for exploration and its carefully crafted stage layouts make this game an unbelievable forgotten gem. At least try it on, people. The soundtrack. I can't say enough about that gorgeous organ sounds. It's just something so out of the ordinary and well made.
This is a clear inspiration to James Bond himself from the title to the core of the game, It looks great but you should definitely check out Nightfire it's an amazing spy game I'd say second best next to Goldeneye of course, Does anyone else remember Spy Fiction? That game was awesome too, I'd love to see a hidden gem video on Shinobi or Onimusha.
A true classic. Interestingly, while it's sort of known as a parody of 60s spy stuff, the comic-serious tone is very much in line with series like The Avengers and The Man from UNCLE. So it's really more of a recreation of 60s spy stuff in that sense.
NOLF was one of my all time favorites. I was thinking recently that a re-emergence of the franchise would be awesome! We are in need of a good spy game.
#GemSuggestion I'd say that Freelancer warrants a suggestion. While the gameplay is rather arcade-y and the story is set in the mold of video games sci-fi cliche, I find that they meld very well with one another, resulting in a very balanced experience. From a technical standpoint it runs very well on windows 10 with a nvidia 950m video card and has little to no bugs. Also even today it is (Again in my opinion) one of the better looking space sandbox games ever made (owning to it's art direction rather than the graphics). All and all while a rather flawed game Freelancer is in my opinion a classic space sandbox game and a fitting candidate for the title of a forgotten gem (Also owing to it's obscurity and legal hurdles which render it incapable of a remake or digital distribution)
I really appreciate that it sounds like you look into how to pronounce the names of the patrons, or you're a linguist lol it's a nice breath of fresh air from "haha I'm gonna butcher this name uwu"
#gemsuggestion Stalker series. Especially the first one. I know its not really a forgotten gem but i cant imagine to see a game (gameseries) like this in the future until Stalker 2 from GSC comes out. Its a game for me that is just more than just a game. I really love the fist one. Not just the Game it self but the world it was set in and more. I cant pinpoint so and so things but the whole thing. I really cant express with words how Stalker is or what is does great but i love it. If you do forgotten gems about Stalker please (if thats even possible) research the developmet of the first game. When i heard about the game. I read a lot about the development and it was so interesting(AI Shooting itself in the foot). I could say thousand more things about Stlaker. I really like youre videos. Gem about Vampire the masquerade bloodlines made me reinstall it.
fhreborn I don't think stalker series is a forgotten gem (like u said). Many people still play that game, mods exists and updated. Hell, there will a sequel too I believe (demo).
"Karl Selev vor 1 Stunde All the people complaining about how they hadn't forgotten x game are morons. A forgotten gem doesn't mean nobody remembers it. It just means it's forgotten by the general public aside from a cult following." I think he said it right. I think Stalker is exactly that. Remembert by us(fans) but forgotten by the general public. But not just the Game it self but also how it was design.
Apparently, the guys who made Stalker are now finishing up Scape From Tarkov. As far as I've heard the sequel is a fanmade mod basically which could be great, but I'm certain many are yearning for a proper new installation of the game
I am sooo in love with this game even to day i still trying to play it pls some one bring it back this was a success in the past and need to be remastered a lot better than COD nowadays
I have been playing these lately. Luckily dedicated fans have the game working on Windows 10 with modern resolutions. I can't believe I missed out on this back in the day. Would have loved to play these when I wasn't in a LAN game of Unreal and Quake.

The whole soundtrack is absolutely brilliant. Still listening even after all these years. Love this game

Every time someone suggests a female James Bond, my first thought is, "But Cate Archer is Right There!"
right?, just license it, and put [insert hot star here] Daisy Ridley, Florence Pugh, Anna Taylor-Joy, would all crush it.
Don't make it modern day, just make it a serious Austin Powers, with a woman. I feel like that captures the originals
The Game of the Year edition came with a soundtrack CD that was awesome, especially if you’re having a 70s themed party.

A number of us still play! Every Saturday, 3:30 PM EST time. You should join! Let me know if you need help installing the game and map packs!
@@cleocuntra8590 Hey I know it's a 2 year old comment but how do you get NOLF on 2022 ? It's nowhere to be found on any launcher
I will play the game.. than i come back to finish this video.
Thx RagnarRox
I still have the original disks.. fml i'm getting old.
Loved the second one
#GemSuggestion - total overdose , the studio went under and so the license for the game
Ahh, No One Lives Forever was one of my fav games back in the days. Nice find.
I always play this game with a total stealth approach.
A masterpiece game,i have it still to this day from the day of its release
I still have my copy of this game and funny thing is I don't think I ever played it when it first came out.
XIII #gemsuggestion
that game fuckin rocked
god damn that's one hell of a title. thanks for the flashbacks.
Sam Butler YES
i've never played the second one, but the first NOLF was one of my fav games back in the day. idk how many times i've finished it.
THANK YOU! This is one of my favourites and it sucks that the copyright is in fucking limbo. It needs a GOG release.
Cate was a fox, she just had that style. 😆👍🎮
Gonna download this as soon as I get home.
Man, I love this game! For years it was my favorite FPS. It is still among the best 5 FPSs for me.
This game was my CRACK. I adored it, played it until the disc was worn out. An absolute GEM.
I loved NOLF2. Cate (Kate?) was really beautiful
Yeah, as the good man said in a comment on this video. Please do timesplitters
Love the video and the channel so much, i rewatched some of your videos so much for the last weeks :).
How about Timesplitters series ?.
I second this
I really appreciate that it sounds like you look into how to pronounce the names of the patrons, or you're a linguist lol it's a nice breath of fresh air from "haha I'm gonna butcher this name uwu"
Yes ragnarox is back boys one of the best channels
I'll always remember this game as one of the most underrated fps series in gaming... and the sexy alternatives for interrogations
the level and weapon variety that is in this game is inexistent in todays games
Stalker is like a person wtih many edges but you cant help but love this person as a whole. Because she ore he is so fascinating.
fhreborn I don't think stalker series is a forgotten gem (like u said). Many people still play that game, mods exists and updated. Hell, there will a sequel too I believe (demo).

All the people complaining about how they hadn't forgotten x game are morons. A forgotten gem doesn't mean nobody remembers it. It just means it's forgotten by the general public aside from a cult following."
I think he said it right.
"cheeki breeki" thing is still surprisingly popular out there. It helps to remember game in masses.
is that samorost soundtrack at the beginning?
I noticed the same immediately.
This Game is the definition of a Hidden gem. SO freaking AMAZING.
I am sooo in love with this game even to day i still trying to play it pls some one bring it back this was a success in the past and need to be remastered a lot better than COD nowadays
If there ever were two games that deserved remasters.
One of a kind. They don't make em like this anymore.
SeanP87 Same with the Sly Cooper trilogy, which this game reminds me of when it comes to its unique-ness.
I have been playing these lately. Luckily dedicated fans have the game working on Windows 10 with modern resolutions. I can't believe I missed out on this back in the day. Would have loved to play these when I wasn't in a LAN game of Unreal and Quake.
thank you for showing me this I some how never seen this game.
at least I can play on PC.
Do tenchu series, the 3rd one is reallu an underrated game #gemsuggestion
Archontasius wrath of heaven is so good. amazing atmosphere and great bosses. I've replayed it like 5 times
Best game ever, was really hoping for a 3rd part. Pip pip!
"...but they just didn't give a crap."
2010's in a nutshell.
