Written by the late, great Dwayne McDuffie, and one of my favorite episodes because it brought depth to a character no had ever considered. It's about faith, and Grundy died knowing what he wanted was out there for him, thanks to Shayera. He died in peace, what more can a person ask for?
The reverence that Aquaman treated this really adds a lot of weight to when he heard that later on his grave had been forced open. “Show me the ones responsible, then dig more graves.” This truly is a bittersweet moment of simplistic faith, and it is beautiful.

I forget if this was before the Thanigar invasion, but man, this show really gave enough for the characters to develop even without having to really know their origin stories. Hawkgirl in particular has to deal with so many conflicting emotions you can't help but appreciate how well put together the show was. Can you imagine what it would be like to be an alien, fight an enemy that you come to care for? Life man. Value it every step of the way.
+Toomnyusernae-It was before the invasion. Because in these episodes, she's still going with this story that she got lost in space and can't find her way back home. The Thanigar invasion blew that out of the water and revealed what she truly came to Earth for. It fleshes out Hawkgirl beautifully and gives insight into how she was raised. The Thanigarians used to worship gods, especially the Cthulu-like creature that they encountered in this episodes. The gods granted them wings and the ability to fly. But overtime, the Thangarians felt stifled and constrained by the gods they worshiped to where they turned against them. They built a society on technology and military might. Some Thangarians were still born with the wings granted and blessed by the gods but others had wings that were technologically manufactured and grafted onto them. So Shayera does know the "gods" exist but she doesn't acknowledge them as such. They are not true gods and not befitting of that name or any worship. Any god, even the Christian God. She is raised to only believe in the physical aspects of life to where she doesn't believe in the soul or the afterlife. The world is only physical, nothing more. And Grundy willing to aid them to be reunited with the soul he lost, that challenged every notion she ever believed in the way life works. And Grundy was supposed to be a zombie. Incapable of feeling or being human anymore. But he cared deeply about her. Became her friend. He had a heart somewhere in there. And he was willing to sacrifice himself for her. Especially at this point in the series, Hawkgirl originally came for a singular purpose. She wasn't supposed to care about anyone, she was just supposed to do what she needed to do. But all these people she lived with, got to know them, they became the true family she never had. To where she's having an even harder time justifying the true reason why she's on Earth. Her stone exterior is starting to break and she is starting to realize, it's okay to be "human" too.
This is what separates older cartoons from the rubbish on Cartoon Network, Disney, and Nickelodeon today; the ability to generate real sadness in it's audience.

"It's faith Hawkgirl...you're not supposed to understand it. You just have it." Damn. This and Ace's death were easily the two saddest animated deaths
@The Eldritch Child, really? Then why do we have shows nowadays like Wander over Yonder, Gravity Falls, and Steven Universe, and Over the Garden Wall? Take off the damn nostalgia goggles.
The Eldritch Child Really? Steven Universe, Gravity Falls, Voltron Legendary Defenders, Adventure Time, Star Wars Rebels, Korra, TMNT, Mystery Incorporated, and even Wander over Yonder all deal with some dark subjects. And these are all modern "children" shows which appeal to kids AND adults just like Justice League.
This gets all the more heart wrenching in Injustice if you pit Grundy against Shayera and their dialogue during a Clash. "Grundy thought Bird Nose were friends!"
From the moment I saw the first episode of this show as a kid I loved almost every character, but Hawkgirl was just one of those who never resonated with me. She seemed stubborn to a fault, arrogant at times, and brutally stand-offish. As the series went on and we saw incredible character development my dislike of Hawkgirl came to be a reasonable respect for her character. She still had her moments where her bull-headed convictions irked me, but it was in a good way. It set her apart as an individual, like every member of the JLA. I think it was this episode that made her among one of my favorite characters. It shows how utterly phenomenal the writing was and the character depth to which they explored.
I hope that when it's my time, I can face the Infinite with a tenth of the grace that was portrayed in this clip. When people tell me that cartoons don't portray emotion well, I want to show them this.
Solomon Grundy... He may be a monster to some but he is a hero to others. May Grundy rest in peace and may he be in the eternal gates of Vallhalla for all eternity...
Grundy put up a valiant fight -- all the way till the very end. His rapport with "Bird nose" was interesting. Even though, all he wanted was his soul back, he was a good teammate.
This was so powerful.. When I first watched this episode.. This moment actually touched me.. It was moving, had so much emotion, and actually summed up what faith is.. What Aquaman at 1:49 is true.. You're not supposed to understand it..
As a huge fan of cartoons so much thnx for the post - at 57 and just getting over a heart surgery (I’m the physical size of Grundy) I could watch this over & over again - I miss my father so so much and many of my friends and family who’ve passed. - without faith what is the purpose of the life you are so blessed with, don’t spend it on video games..
The first cartoon to actually make me cry when i was a kid. This also made me realized that i really like Grundy a lot and i was heart broken to see him go.
If this scene is already sad, imagine that, instead of Hawkgirl, it was Batman the one accompanied Grundy in his last moments: Grundy: "Is this the first time someone you care about dies in your arms?" Batman: "No...But it's the first time in which they can at least hear me say goodbye..."
one of the best scenes in the show. he will get his soul, go to Valhalla, and Odin will be like 'here have my seat' but seriouly I get choked up every time
What I love about the ending is that, by the sound of it, they brought Grundy back to Slaughter Swamp. That was where he was born, and his only real home. They brought him back to someplace he felt safe in....
Word of advice for the ladies out there, if you ever want to see your boyfriend's sensitive side, just show him this. I guarantee he'll be bawling his eyes out. I should know, I'm a guy and I can't watch this without crying. AND I'VE SEEN IT MULTIPLE TIMES! 0:43-0:59 (Sniff) I'm not gonna cry. I'm not gonna cry. I'm not gonna cry. 1:01-1:05 (Proceeds to cry entire waterfalls worth of tears.)
I think this is what alot of shows lack now a days. Actual feeling, very few shows invoke such powerful emotions. Many of the classic DC shows did just that and I think that's why they are so popular. I love the contemporary DC shows on now like Young Justice, but they still don't compare

I watched when I was a kid. Watching it agian almost made my cry agian Rembering the feeling
Very sad, great, and well written story. I cried. They don't make cartoons like this anymore.
I cried and I have never seen this episode.
+Austin Heady great episode indeed
it's on Netflix
Katfish1216 I can't even get Netflix on this computer
lame
Yeah it sucks.
Anyone who's ever lost someone, who ever hopes for peace and forgiveness, will be moved by this scene.
Ok so I did cry, a man can cry if he wants!!
and this was a kid's show. It had some of the deepest and saddest moment I've ever seen.
I believe this show was for older teens and younger adults...
cried when I saw this at 8, 17 and still cry at grundy's death. this by far is one of the set of episodes. these two episoes managed to touch on, faith, death, made you care about a zombie, and if you were small, hell to this day, those cthulu realm creatures are some damn nightmare fuel.
Solomon Grundy,
Born on a Monday,
Christened on Tuesday,
Married on Wednesday,
Took ill on Thursday,
Grew worse on Friday,
Died on Saturday,
Buried on Sunday.
That was the end of,
Solomon Grundy.
Damn, this moved me. I may not believe in any religion, but this is just touching. Grundy, if there is a heaven, I hope you made it there. Despite all the bad things you've done, you more than made up for it here.
this actually made me cry. they did a wonderful job doing this particular show. well done.
The feels on the bus go round and round...
This was to powerful a show to be meant for children.im glad we adults and decades long comic collectors were respected.
"It's faith, Hawkgirl. You are not supposed to understand it. You just have it." I know this might be just a cartoon for some. But as a Christian, I couldn't agree more. You simply can't explain everything in faith. You just have it and believe in it which gives you inner peace. Paul Dini and Bruce Timm really nailed it in their series.
Being christian doesn't describe what faith is.
+Mark Simonsen ya man but hes got it so let him have it, hes a regular grundy in his own right
+ThaMobstarr If anyone understands faith, I do. I've been fighting cancer since early August of 2015, and I've only been improving since. I owe much of that to my faith.
+ThaMobstarr A great black writer make this ep
...Yay?
This is what you get when the writers absolutely love their source material. This is what happens when a writer is a writer because he’s a super fan. Excellent writing here. Made me cry like a baby back in the day.
Yep. All these years later and I still cry at this. Every time. Solomon Grundy...born on a Monday...
I started to get a little teary eyed, but just lost it on the tombstone. Seriously, I can't be the only one who laughed my ass off when I saw his epitaph was "Born on a Monday"
I blubb like the clappers.
its a refrence to the short poem that inspired the character of grundy its actually arather touching tribute
ladyaceina absoluteluy correct alot of people dont know that!!!!
allen collamore Solomon Grundy, born on a monday, christened on tuesday, married on wednesday, took ill on thursday, worsened on friday, died on saturday, burried on sunday, this is the story of Solomon Grundy...
***** What does that even mean?
This was so heartbreaking, but so well done.
You know UA-cam, I don't really understand why you wanted me to cry in the middle of the night but here I am
This was one of my favorite episodes. I almost felt Hawkgirl's pain, losing her friend Grundy. I almost would give her a big hug so I could make her feel better only if she was real. R.I.P. Grundy. You are cool and a true hero including your friend Shayera and the rest of the Justice League. :)
Someone PLEASE bring back this show. I am a better person because of this show, Batman TAS, and Superman TAS. This cartoon had so much action, great plot lines, hilarious sexual innuendo that I now JUST realized, but most importantly, depth and meaning.
TheJustin4848 nostalgia goggles?
The Eldritch Child Definition: A metaphor for somebody viewing anything in past times as much better than it actually was.
TheJustin4848 I didn't say the past was better. Im just saying that modern day children shows are not going to be geared at dark, morbid subjects.
I hope they at least buried him on a Sunday.
God, this series had all the makings to be epic. Scenes like this are proof of it. I don't get why there weren't more shows like this being made.
Definitely one of my favorite JL ep. It made me shed a few tears..the story line the music it was sad but at the same time beautiful!
Augh! This part gets me every time. Freaking Mark Hamill, making me cry over Solomon Grundy.
I'm not...crying....
Everytime I see this ending, it breaks my heart into a million pieces.
RIP Solomon Grundy.
"Buried on a Sunday...thus ends the tale of Solomon Grundy."
I like it when Grundy is offered redemption within stories.
R.I.P Grundy u will be truly missed
Every time I rewatch this episode I can’t help but bawl my eyes out
I WAS LIKE 12 WHEN THIS ORIGINALLY AIRED AND IT STILL HITS ME IN THE FEELS
If this scene is already sad, imagine that, instead of Hawkgirl, it was Batman the one accompanied Grundy in his last moments:
Grundy: "Is this the first time someone you care about dies in your arms?"
Batman: "No...But it's the first time in which they can at least hear me say goodbye..."
one of the best scenes in the show. he will get his soul, go to Valhalla, and Odin will be like 'here have my seat' but seriouly I get choked up every time
What I love about the ending is that, by the sound of it, they brought Grundy back to Slaughter Swamp. That was where he was born, and his only real home. They brought him back to someplace he felt safe in....
Almost every character on JL/JLU is my favourite representation of that character. This scene with Grundy is sad, even as an adult.
What IS it with DC and the music they have? It hits just the right notes (no pun intended).
The Bruce Timm era. The whole team just got better and better at it as they kept going.
Plowbeast Late reply, but that's for damn sure.
Shirley Walker is a treause
Word of advice for the ladies out there, if you ever want to see your boyfriend's sensitive side, just show him this. I guarantee he'll be bawling his eyes out. I should know, I'm a guy and I can't watch this without crying. AND I'VE SEEN IT MULTIPLE TIMES!
0:43-0:59 (Sniff) I'm not gonna cry. I'm not gonna cry. I'm not gonna cry.
1:01-1:05 (Proceeds to cry entire waterfalls worth of tears.)
+Darian Bogard then you didn't fully grasp this magnificent scene....
One of the best line I heard when I was a kid it's faith hawkgirl you're not supposed to understand it you just have it
Faith is the conviction of what you don't see, and the certain of what you wait 😢
I think this is what alot of shows lack now a days. Actual feeling, very few shows invoke such powerful emotions. Many of the classic DC shows did just that and I think that's why they are so popular.
I love the contemporary DC shows on now like Young Justice, but they still don't compare
And he died on a Sunday.
No he died on Saturday the funeral was on Sunday
jacob burt And that was the end of Solomon Grundy.
Its moments like this that make this show very special.
im happy you posted this i was looking for this... I want to put something like that on my tombstone...
this One, and the Death of Ace.
Hits ya where ya live.
going to blow my bird nose and wipe away the tears.
What Aquaman said at the end is pretty much the definition of religion.
No, it was the definition of faith lol.
eaglerabbit89 not just religion, life
"Do you believe Grundy's soul is waiting for him?...." cue the tears! 😢
this always makes me cry and thats why i love seeng this
Guys born on monday on injustice gods among us gives him anther chance so he lives again
No considering it's a different universe. He's officially dead in the DCAU
Throat getting choked. No use rationalizing.
This is so sad it makes me cry more than most disney dead's , because he's so sweet and asking for so little ad this moment.
Well dang... thats some niiiice voice work on him, suprised i missed this ep. then agein child me would have cired alot more that i am now.
Phew, who let the rain in my room?
So, solomon grundy got his eternal reward.
was it pants? >_>
Firan25
It was a decent pair of pants.
Keshon Broadbelt im sure brainiac got pants too somewhere
HOW ABOUT UTILITY BELT?!
Lol
@@ZyxthePest batman and Robin have them Solomun grundy want belt too.
this is seriously one of my favorite scenes ^^
Tears me up every time
This is the DC I know and love. Not this DC Cinematic Crap we've been force fed.
He'll just get up even stronger in a few minutes just like the last 500 times he died.
This is more memorable since he "died" being a hero in this instance something we don't see from Grundy again
no, it is the end. I mean it was that last seeing of grundy, in JLA TV series
DeadPool
Huh, I never noticed that. Makes sense now though.
that does not happen in the DCAU this is not like the comcis where he can do that he died for real here
DeadPool he comes back in the JL something something... The sequel seasons, but this time he comes back as a different grundy, but grundy nonetheless.
Moments like this I wished occurred in DC's movies. I mean the potential is there for these stories to exist and the talent is there.
I like to watch this scene every once in a while. Not for any real reason, it just makes me feel bad.
