I remind when I was about 7or 8 my father set up and aquarium the had a treasure chest with a lid the would open a close by the bubbles accumulating up the lid it would open the big air bubble would rise out and the lid would go closed, he also a a deep sea diver in then and bubbles came out of the helmet. I didn't understand the physics of it all didn't care back they but I thought I was the greatest thing. It not my cup a tea now but with kids the a amazed by the imagination of it all. My absolute favorite thing about this channel is how much it’s geared toward “fish health and happiness comes first, but otherwise do whatever you want with your tank.” It takes so much pressure off of the hobby since so many other fish channels can be very intimidating!

Just wanted to take a moment to say thank you this video as well as ALL your Monday morning videos. Can't think of a better way to start my Monday's than watching you guys. Have a happy week.
This is a wonderful video. My first tank was the basic 55g which is very difficult to aquascape due to the narrow dimensions front to back. (The next one was a 40 breeder-great for aquascaping!!) The 55 didn’t offer a lot of space to move things around, particularly when I fell in love with a larger piece of driftwood. I also learned to look at the tank from the side to see how much space the fish had to swim and room for the plants.
I totally relate to that girl from #9. I made the mistake of buying this really nice looking piece of spiderwood for my first tank that I have now, but it's so hard to clean and its tearing my bettas fins! Now after seeing this video I'm tempted to rescape to something more manageable
😮i love wood in my tanks it looks amazing but how do you deal with the water colouring isue..its a real deal breaker if it only looks nice for a day or so
I’m working on my tank for future Axolotls, some say to keep good lighting for the plants, but my Axolotl’s health comes first so I’m searching for plants who can grow well in dim lights. I already have a ton of Java moss
Can I use my Acrylic paint while the fish tank is already set up? I liked having the clear back but now I would like to have a black background lol. Thanks!
I'm the opposite of what you mentioned in number 10... I'm interested in the plants! I'm nervous to keep fish, I want them to be safe and healthy. I think I will start with just plants for a few months to see how I do then maybe add a fish. I really like the guppies I have been seeing, would those be a good "beginner" fish?
I "aquascaped" my one big tank (65gal) and have a cute light path going through the black substrate. Little did I know my rasboras would lay crazy eggs so now I can't vacuum the path because the fry stay at the bottom 😑 and one of my plants died so half the tank won't look like I'd intended it to. Oh well
The best thing Joanna has ever said in any video....#10 Do what you want. Having fun is what it's all about. My favourite tank isn't the all singing all dancing biotope that took me ages to do. It's the 20 gallon where I used blue gravel, white sand, some resin palm trees, beach huts and sail boats...and I created a desert island scene.😊
You guys are so down to earth, it makes it easier for new fish keepers to get educated and feel comfortable while doing so. When I was first starting out, I binged your channel and learned a TON of new stuff about certain species, aquascaping, tank set ups, etc.. just wanted to say I appreciate all you do, and I hope to see a lot more from both of you! 💜
Great list to consider! I just went through my own (very similar) list when scaping a 3 gal bowl. A "best long term plants for tiny tanks" would be a much appreciated video on this channel or small scape channel 😉
Thank you for telling people that artificial plants and even the fun decor is okay. I would love to see u guys do some aquascapes like this. The internet is greatly lacking that basic content.
Botanicals are something that can look great in an aquascape, but they do break down over time and those broken bits of leaves can be annoying during a gravel vac. Great video! I think my tanks have become somewhat more utilitarian over time as I have gained more experience with my fish and the way I have aquascaped their tanks. Aquascaping, though, is what makes fish keeping fun and interesting.
My opinion on best fish for aquascaping are my ghost cats. They just wiggle in some coverage and never move until night. Sometimes I wonder what they think about.
My plan because i'm in a wheelchair is to do mostly artificial but add some moss balls and live floating plants to help with water quality. I guess though if you do a biotope with the right fish you are guaranteed to have success as it would suit the fish better. I wonder what you think about 10 Espei rasboras, 6 albino Cory cats and 3 Nerite snails.
You all make a great couple. IMO when couples come.out together in these videos or podcasts, it goes to 💩. You all are really great together and seem to make each other shine! Keep up the great work!
I didn't do real plants for my African cichlid tank. I feed them plants for a balanced diet. But did not keep real plants. I like the rock display. Next time I want to do Texas holy rock.
Bad habits and fish!! I was wondering about the wet spots around my aquarium... I just caught my pearl gourami getting out for a smoke break!! Ok got that out of my system! I recently did an aquascape that I love but see it being problematic if I ever want to catch anything! Loved your video!!!!
You guys rock! My wife just recently decided she wanted into the hobby as well and i got her her first 10g. she’s definitely team bright neon gravel 😅 I see the way you two bond over your hobby and it’s very much the same with her and I(ok I’m way more of a fish nut than her but she’s getting there lol), and it really warms my heart. Keep up the good work!
This was a great 10 things!! Great points on things to consider before setting up an aquascape or a tank! Thank you guys for always taking the time to help all of us in our hobby! Things I have definitely learned are being careful with betta fins and making sure things aren't big or small enough for fish to get stuck in them (chola wood.. I have no idea how to spell that) I had a white skirt tetra get wedged into a tiny piece of chola wood... to this day I still can't figure out how it got in there... it was really little. I literally had to break it to get him out and the fish is still alive 👍 I hope you guys are having a great week! Thank you always for sharing!!🙏🤗🌿🐟🌿💚
Gonna do you guys in the comments a favor, when planting some plants especially dwarf hair grass and other carpeting plants, plant them before you put water in the tank, just use moist substrate, because then you can pack your plants tighter without the risk of them all popping up and stressing you out... (I am not a pro or good at explaining things so do some research on how to do this)
First thing I notice is..Do you want a fish tank with plants or a plant tank with a few fish? Because the best plant tanks have a very low bio-load. You won't see perfect plant growth in a fish busy tank. Algae and nutrients build up too fast. You can only do one and thats final. Second,I'm not so sure ferts, iron, and Co2 is good for fish. I saw one science study that showed Co2 poisons fish's brains. It causes slow but over time, damage. Unless you add too much and it just kills them all overnight. I tried...and realized I like fish more and now stick to plants you might say are from O.G. days.. Swords,Valls,Java Moss, Hygro,Ludwigia,Crypts. They can and do thrive on no fertilizers at all. But,none make a carpet or have blazing reds or orange colors. Choice is up to you.
I think fake plastic plants aren't good for Bettas with long flowing fins. I think their fins get scratched and they get fin rot from it. I am on the reddit Betta forum a lot and people always post Bettas with fin rot and you look in the background and 90% of the time there is a plastic plants with pointy leaves in the background.
where can you buy pieces of wood that are root-like and awesome without spending a ton? just small pieces of mopani are really expensive but are SO COOL i want it in my tank!
Iv heard and read some plants can have hitchhikers like snails, eggs, worms, etc or plants that can contain parasites, disease, etc thag can be found at petstores and online. Where can i get safe plants??
Greetings from Michigan. Another great video. I presently have fake plants. I have both plastic plants and silk plants. I really love the silk ones. Very soft and no sharpness to them. I love your tanks....the wood...variety of live plants and fishies.I am living vicariously through you on your planted tanks.LOL😄🐟
Another great show! I couldn’t agree more with your list. It all boils down what you like and what the inhabitants like, it’s all about enjoying our hobbies🙂 thanks again folks.
As I do agree with this video in regards to fish keeping, in my opinion, aquascaping has more to do with the scape itself. I think that is the main focus of a true aquascape, then once that is complete you pick your fish based on what you built. That is unless you are designing a particular scape for a specific type of fish like most chiclids for instance. I see true aquascapes having the tank itself be prioritized vs picking fish first. Just depends though in all honesty whom you are and such. I am one to design first then pick what fish or shrimp I want to go in afterwards based on my composition or layout. Me personally...I also find the word aquascape used when (if we are being honest with ourselves lol) it really just a boosted up fish tank. Aquascaping imo is were the scape is the focus of the tank, wether it's a nature style, black water, or whatever...throwing some plants rocks &/or wood in a tank shouldn't be considered aquascaping imo...again, this is all just personal opinion. Your channel is great for all kinds of fish keeping advice and such and I have watched a ton of videos from your channel, but what I consider aquascaping is something like Green Aqua or George Farmer.
I've watched so many fish videos trying to plan my first tank and somehow #2 blew my mind. I knew I wanted a betta and they like big leaves for hiding and resting against? but what kind of gravel or sand do they like? I remember this rumor that they eat certain roots is that true? I'm not actually looking for a response. I'm just saying I'm happy to have more to look into! It seems obvious now but I just needed someone to say it for me to realize.
They basically destroy everything - haha. Low light, rocks and keep it simple. Nothing that could cause them to injure themselves - nothing sharp - they spook easily. Also - they can be messy eaters so keep that in mind as you scape your tank. If you give the tanks enough rocks maybe you can add some bristlenose in there if they have enough hiding places - although no guarantee they will make it.
Prime Time Aquatics hi I saw that you gave me information about the piranha tank and I was wondering if you could ever do a video of them and personally I think there a cool fish and I know they hide a lot and they are messy eaters but I think every fish deserves a chance to have a cool fish tank
Wow... Thank you both. I am an old hobbiest from back in the 90's when things were much simpler. I have grand ambitions, however, I may not have the time or space for my dream set up. I appreciate you bringing up many of these points. Have a wonderful new year.
As others have said below, your #10 tip, which you feel is really #1, is why I LOVE your channel. Tanks guys :) This type of advice is worth more than money. You two are the best. Be well and again, thank you!
My oscars are serious aquascapers. All I have, is some gravel, and fake plants. I just reset the gravel @ water changes. Lol! The plants, practically, get moved every 5 minutes... I don't even rebury the bases in the gravel anymore. 🤷♀️ But, I have real and fake plants in my Molly tank, and only real ones in my shrimp tank.
Happy Monday!!! Great tips, especially #10, and right on time. I was just handed down a 29 gallon and will be planning over the winter how to scape it but might end up being the kids tank so I can reclaim my 75
@@aquienpuedainteresar4188 My current 29 Gallon has 8 Rosy Red Minnows. A female Beta. And 4 Nerite Snails. People look at minnows as feeder fish but I'm finding them to have alot of personality when they are kept in a sizable school with plenty of room to swim.
I think I did things backwards ...... I am a plant addict, my children wanted bettas. Then ...... All the sudden plants, rocks, changing scapes and more and more plants. My husband bought himself a 55 gallon tank and I took it over with plants, wood, rocks .... I love and enjoy the fish, but plants are my jam.
Clean the aquarium first :))...... Don't use "Monte Carlo" with goldfish :)) neither use floating plants :))..... Only if they are made of steel.... Everything else works oks for mine.
Good Morning, this video has a lot of good content. I love people that set up a tank and will post,” What fish should I get”.? Research Research Research. Water quality is a big thing too. Who wants to always be worrying about having to adjust the PH or Hardness, I only have fish I know will be successful . Love from Wisconsin!
Mbuna mock me by repeatedly digging up my struggling vallisneria from their sand substrate. Vals super-glued to stones gradually lose their grip, so next up is fishing line. Java fern and anubias mostly lose their bouts with intermittent diatoms. These fish always seemed to value the cover of artificial plants, but there are many benefits of real plants. Thus, I persist. I have never before experienced beard envy. 🤜🤛 Another wonderful video.
Ya, mbuna can make you crazy - you put them in a tank and they look back and say - watch this - thanks for the tank! As they proceed to "make it their own". Haha
People underestimate the power of plants. A bunch of plants and a sponge filters would have saved me a bunch of fish when I was growing up. I put in fake fish and killed them all. My grandmothers seasoned tank with goldfish flourished. I now understand way. Even her algea was enough to do the job if you give them a chance. Plants are still better though XD
Video should be renamed to Fish Aquarium basics. I could be wrong but I thought Aquarium scaping is live plants and design. Barely touched the topic. But great info on the basics.
Yes #10 was the best advice..... I’ve been in the Salt and freshwater hobby for over 13 years and when asked I always suggest do whatever inspires and makes you happy, and I’ll keep you from poisoning your fish lol...... I love this hobby!! Guys thanks for the great videos love the content you guys are awesome keep it going!
I love this video! I just redid my Betta tank. I have always kept Goldfish before this. I never really did much aquascaping with them. This time I decided to try a Betta and aquascape with live plants. Well, many of my plants died. Then I set up a tank that was OK, but I wasn't crazy about it. I looked at many aquascapes on the internet that kept Bettas in them. I found two l liked. Then I used the idea I really liked from one and two things I really liked from another tank and put those ideas together for my aquascape. I have a mix of live plants and fake plants. Plus, rocks and a fish store decoration. I am now in love with this aquascape! My fish, Monet seems quite pleased too. He really explored when I completed the "renovation" of his home. I also have discovered that like Joanna, one Betta is not enough! I now have a second Betta named Buddy. Oh, and thank you for the advice about really thinking about adding shrimp to my betta tank. Monet for sure would have eaten them! I did get a nitrite snail and Monet bugged the heck out of it. I had to remove the snail to keep Monet from killing it. I have put the snail in with Buddy and they are happy together. Sorry this was such a long comment. You two are the best. ❤🐟
In a tank with multies, will they dig under the rocks or just move the loose gravel around? Trying to figure out if I will be able to put some bigger river rocks in the aquarium.
I might have missed it, but I think a good question to ask is if the plants are true aquatic plants... too many stores sell unsuspecting people plants that aren't true aquatics
I noticed that you have several beautiful tanks with extensive decorations. Whenever you perform a Water Change, how do you clean the substrate? Do you have to remove all of the decorations, do you just clean around the decorations, or do you ignore cleaning the substrate?
Love u videos. Always full of good info ..... I've been wanting to go from fake to live plants for a while now, so am getting as much info as I can. Shame all you good you tubers don't ship to the UK

I love my elusive banjo cat; I swear they are either 100% motionless or going 100 miles an hour. There's no in-between with those guys!

I favor silk plants and a few rocks for hiding places. Less to me is better all around.

I got them because they were supposed to be harder to breed so I wouldn't be overrun 😂
Driftwood in a Malawi tank? They’d probably prefer lime stone or granite.
My water is already hard with a high pH so limestone doesn't do much for me. :-)
When he calls Ohko Stone, Seiryu Stone 😬 embarasssingggggg haha just kidding 😋

Number 11. If your house is dirty and you can't keep that clean then you probably wont keep an aquarium clean.

While I'm very happy with my single aquarium, I do wish I had the space, money and time for more.

Corydoras make a fine mess of aquascape. They push all the substrate to the front and make it level. Even when I put big rocks in the back.

At some point when I am brave, I will attempt. ☺️
Seiryu stone. Like. Stare but wihout the "T" and you. Sare you.
So jealous of that glossy beard. My work requires me to shave, i have not complied lately.
Too funny
Iv heard and read some plants can have hitchhikers like snails, eggs, worms, etc or plants that can contain parasites, disease, etc thag can be found at petstores and online. Where can i get safe plants??
Tissue culture plants are usually the safest.
Good review prior to the next build....
I love that. Thank you.
I love this! Do what makes you happy
I had a terra die trapped in aponogeton leaf hole 😂
So I am going for fancy goldfish. Any plant recommendations
Maybe anubias?
Greetings from Michigan. Another great video. I presently have fake plants. I have both plastic plants and silk plants. I really love the silk ones. Very soft and no sharpness to them. I love your tanks....the wood...variety of live plants and fishies.I am living vicariously through you on your planted tanks.LOL😄🐟
Hi Marty! Fake plants can really add to a tank. They’re looking more and more lifelike. ☺️
Why are they keep looking at each other
Just in time for a tank sale! Glad I seen this before I got impatient on my 20L🧡
Another great show! I couldn’t agree more with your list. It all boils down what you like and what the inhabitants like, it’s all about enjoying our hobbies🙂 thanks again folks.
Absolutely- well summed up. 👍
Something nice to watch while drinking coffee on a cold midwestern Monday!
I know - it's snowing by us!
How nice! We are getting snow at the moment 🤩❄️ - enjoy the rest of your ☕️ !
Beautifully said
In 3:34 what is they name
Love betas!!
so beautiful
I've watched so many fish videos trying to plan my first tank and somehow #2 blew my mind. I knew I wanted a betta and they like big leaves for hiding and resting against? but what kind of gravel or sand do they like? I remember this rumor that they eat certain roots is that true? I'm not actually looking for a response. I'm just saying I'm happy to have more to look into!
It seems obvious now but I just needed someone to say it for me to realize.
Hi do you know any cool ideas for a piranha tank
Thank you for this video. I've learned a lot. I really appreciate the last one. 🥰🥰🥰
Wow... Thank you both. I am an old hobbiest from back in the 90's when things were much simpler. I have grand ambitions, however, I may not have the time or space for my dream set up. I appreciate you bringing up many of these points. Have a wonderful new year.
Sir tomoch bright of light can cause of death like montycorlo plz
As others have said below, your #10 tip, which you feel is really #1, is why I LOVE your channel. Tanks guys :) This type of advice is worth more than money. You two are the best. Be well and again, thank you!
Thank you!
Great video. Learned a lot about preparing an aquascape. Especially the information about the fishes fins can be a factor.
My oscars are serious aquascapers. All I have, is some gravel, and fake plants. I just reset the gravel @ water changes. Lol! The plants, practically, get moved every 5 minutes... I don't even rebury the bases in the gravel anymore. 🤷♀️
But, I have real and fake plants in my Molly tank, and only real ones in my shrimp tank.
Mine do the same! :-)
Sharp stone edge wont dmg fish fins, if you have aggresive fish that would be the reason
You guys are so cute together🥰
Thank you!
Happy Monday!!! Great tips, especially #10, and right on time. I was just handed down a 29 gallon and will be planning over the winter how to scape it but might end up being the kids tank so I can reclaim my 75
If your kids ask for goldfish get em a school of minnows :D
@@henrylin6537 Thanks for the recommendation. That might work because they prefer schooling fish
@@henrylin6537 I'll be doing my research. I seen the minnows and they have nice color and yes they're small so i large school would be nice to look at
I think I did things backwards ...... I am a plant addict, my children wanted bettas. Then ...... All the sudden plants, rocks, changing scapes and more and more plants. My husband bought himself a 55 gallon tank and I took it over with plants, wood, rocks .... I love and enjoy the fish, but plants are my jam.
That's cool!
Clean the aquarium first :))......
Don't use "Monte Carlo" with goldfish :)) neither use floating plants :))..... Only if they are made of steel.... Everything else works oks for mine.
Clean the aquarium first is a great one!
I am learning so much binging your vids. Great job.
Great Video Great Tips Happy Monday
Is beach sand good for aquarium aquascaping.
Good point!
Haha
I'm helping my son with a tank. He's 11. It has real plants but its also bkini bottom from spongebob. Fun times.......
🙌 truly classic!
Fake plants... wow.. I wanted to edit. But you seemed to figure it out. Lol
Video should be renamed to Fish Aquarium basics. I could be wrong but I thought Aquarium scaping is live plants and design.
Barely touched the topic. But great info on the basics.
The name of the video is about things to consider before Aquascaping. That's exactly what the video is about. 🤷🏼♀️
Thank you!
They are knowledgeable and get to the point
That is awesome! Glad you are here! Ya, the shrimp might get eaten!
In Germany we also say Dragon Stone to :)
i love how relatable this is. I don't have hours and hours a every week to maintain a tank. Subscribed
Ya - it's all about balance!
In a tank with multies, will they dig under the rocks or just move the loose gravel around? Trying to figure out if I will be able to put some bigger river rocks in the aquarium.
MIne have dug under the rocks too. :-)
I might have missed it, but I think a good question to ask is if the plants are true aquatic plants... too many stores sell unsuspecting people plants that aren't true aquatics
Very true. Many sell semi-aquatic plants that cannot be fully submerged.
thanks for sharing some of aquascaping tips..
I noticed that you have several beautiful tanks with extensive decorations. Whenever you perform a Water Change, how do you clean the substrate? Do you have to remove all of the decorations, do you just clean around the decorations, or do you ignore cleaning the substrate?
Usually I just clean around them. If it's something that can be removed easily once in a while I will pick it up and siphon under it as well.
Love u videos. Always full of good info ..... I've been wanting to go from fake to live plants for a while now, so am getting as much info as I can. Shame all you good you tubers don't ship to the UK
Haha - I hope you do well with them! :-)
