Well you almost got it. It's more so speaking of us(as men) working hard so that our sons life can be better than ours. We plant the trees knowing we will never sit under the shade.
      Hard times makes strong men.
      Strong men makes good times.
      Good times makes weak men.
And Weak men make hard times.

All's well that ends well... One little act can turn over many lives in return... The example of the tree means that. It helps shade humans, earth with soil, rain and so on. One kind act is all we see, but the outcome and consequences can be a lot in the world.

My perception of people and time was tweaked when, as a young employee, working for the city. In an interdepartmental meeting the head of the trees department was complimented about what a nice canopy the trees would make for this already beautiful boulevard . He responded he would not be around to see it. He was an irascible guy and I could never tell if he was being cynical or wistful about his work.

A young man I grew up with passed away a few years ago. His name was Brent. His neighbor (we'll call him Tom) went to Brent's funeral, very torn up over his death at only 18. He told Brent's brother Nick that Brent had driven by Tom's house one day and seen him sitting in his truck at the end of his driveway - this was in rural WV. Brent turned around and went back, sat there talking to Tim for almost an hour, then went on his way. Tom said Brent saved his life that day. Tom was leaving his house with a pistol in his glove compartment....he was going to go out in the field and kill himself. After Brent stopped and talked to him, he started feeling better and decided against suicide. You never know what impact your actions are going to have on someone.

When I see people Engrossed in thought , I point to the ground and say “ uh oh , I think you may have dropped your smile”! They usually (99% ) smile , laugh and say thank you . I’ve had a lot of them explain that they needed that. That’s my ( although corny) way of giving back. I see it as planting a seed that hopefully will grow into a great tree and someday give fruit. After five years in the Army, I felt exactly the same way. It sounds strange, but I took great comfort thinking that suicide was an option. It was one of the only things I had control of in my life. I haven't felt that way for many, many years, though. It may sound glib or trite, but one thing that kept me hanging on was the thought that the result of suicide was permanent, and if there was even the smallest chance that life could get better, I must stay alive. There was (another) awful experiment done using rats. They would put rats into a deep bucket of water until they started to drown to see how long they'd fight (swim) to survive. On average they last about 5-10 minutes each before giving up and accepting they're death, but before they would drown they would pull the rats out and let them rest, and then repeat the experiment. What they found was that when the rats believed they where going to (eventually) be saved from drowning, instead of only lasting about 5-10 min, they would continue to fight (swim) for over 15 minutes to survive solely on the belief that they will eventually be saved.
It's an odd comparison I know, but the part of your comment

I’m 31, single, been depressed a lot of the time and not found a career that matches what I majored in but last year my sister died. And this year I decided I’m tired of wallowing bc I can’t find something to be super excited about. I’ll just help others be happy for now, so I just got hired at a daycare and started the application to become a foster parent. There’s always something good we can do even if it doesn’t feel perfect.

I think it's more like "good people don't do things that hinder others." I don't think you need to go out of your way to do good to be a good person. Because not everyone has the emotions or finances to spare for that. As long as you're mindful of your impact on others and don't do anything negative, you're a good person imo.

Someone can do good things without money or large amounts of time. When someone makes the effort to do something good, even when they don't have to, that's what makes it extraordinary. I think what you just described is the basics of not being a bad person. And sure, if someone is not a bad person, one could say they are a good person. But indifference can be a slippery slope. There have been awful events in history that could have been avoided or at least lessened if good people had not been indifferent. There's a quote that I can't recall exactly, but it's something like "all that is required for evil to succeed is the inaction of good men". Simply not doing bad things does not, by default, mean someone is doing good things. Even if it requires going out of our way, we should do good things for others.

There is always some way to show kindness. If you don't have money, you have time. A word or a hug or a helping hand has no cost. Even if it's intimidating or otherwise less than pleasant, the fact that you stepped up and did a thing out of kindness helps the giver grow and the receiver to help the giver.

2000 years ago, a lonely figure, brutally tortured to within an inch of death so totally he didn't even look like a human being anymore, was nailed to a cross and left to suffocate to death for crimes committed by everyone but Himself. The repercussions of that day have shaped the world in ways we cannot begin to fathom. If we keep His commandments, He unlocks a world we could never find on our own, and the peace and joy that comes through Him remains forever. It is a gift. You cannot earn it, it cannot be bought.

There's an old saying , " the best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The SECOND best time is TODAY!" If you are depressed and in that dark, dark place where nothing seems to matter... where you feel your life is wasted... gather yourself up and go do something for someone else. Do something, no matter how small, for a stranger or for the cashier at your favorite store or just SOMEONE... anyone ! When you do , look into their eyes and see how powerful you are. We are all alike. We all want to be thought of and loved.
You are valuable... you matter. Treat yourself like someone you care about!
Imagine the world if each and every one of us would only love ourselves and be good to others!
    Be well everyone!

To be, or not to be. that is the question. Tis is nobler in the mind to suffer the slings of arrows of outrageous fortune, or to take up arms against a sea of troubles and to oppose, end them. To die, to sleep, and by sleep we mean to say to end the thousand natural shocks of heart ache the body is heir to. Tis a consumation truly to be wished. To sleep, nay, to dream? And there is the rub. What lies in that sleep of death what dreams may come when we shuffle off this mortal coil must give us pause, and the respect to the calamity of a life long lived.

From 14 years old I have battled thoughts of suicide. I have attempted on multiple occasions and failed each time. I became a mum at 20 and still fought those thoughts but I had an anchor ⚓️ now. No matter how much I wanted to leave, I just couldn't do that to my little boy. I thought about it often... and then not as often.. I am 32 now. I have 3 beautiful children, I am engaged to be married, I have a lot of reasons to stay. The thoughts are few and far between but when they come they hit like waves. Its maybe been a year or so now since I last thought that way.
It is a lifetime battle but I am prepared to continue fighting.
I have and always will try to be a good person and leave everywhere I go, better than I found it.
If you are fighting those thoughts right now, please know there are thousands of outcomes for your life but none of them exist if you are not here. Keep fighting, keep loving and that love will find its way back to you threefold ❤🙏🏽☯️
P.s You are enough. I love you friend
