    I can speak firsthand to the adaptation period. I've been exercising for 45 years. Hard. I started off as a wrestler (6 years) then moved into bodybuilding and powerlifting. I've always been very lean and ate a lot of carbs. But as I entered my 50's I became insulin insensitive. My cholesterol was high as was my blood sugar, my endurance was going down, I was foggy, irritable, I had red patches on the skin of my face, I was pale etc. And I was eating a pretty healthy diet. Lots of fruit, grains, veggies and high quality protein and I still felt like shit. I've read plenty of books on nutrition; The China Study, The Paleo Solution, The Paleo Diet for Athletes, The Warrior Diet, Fats that Kill, Fats that Heal, The PH Miracle, The Glycemic Revolution, The Perfect Health Diet, The Paleo Manifesto and many more. But it was reading Mark Sisson's book Primal Endurance where he had a chapter on the Ketogenic diet and athletes being adapted to it and having a much larger energy supply because of fat stores and not going through the ups and downs of a regular glucose diet that piqued my interest. At first it seemed too extreme but I was feeling so bad physically and mentally I knew I had to try something way different. So I did a lot of research here on youtube and I knew what to expect during the adaptation period. A lot of athletes who've switched over quit a few times because they attributed their initial weakness to the diet itself instead of the adaptation period. I can tell you, I felt like crap, I had no energy, I had headaches, constipation, (I know I probably wasn't consuming enough salt but consuming so much fat was enough without adding salt into the mix!) I was dehydrated, my legs were very weak, etc. But knowing what to expect helped me to stick to it and now I feel great. The amazing thing about being in a fat burning state is how much better my concentration and cognitive ability is. I feel less nervous, steady, stronger, leaner, way more alert, no ups and downs anymore, I feel 20 years younger and my skin looks way better. And I don't miss carbs. I allow myself days where I eat plenty of fruit but I don't feel like I'll ever go back to eating grains at all. I lost 10lbs without even trying and my strength and stamina have skyrocketed. But if I hadn't felt so crappy and become insulin insensitive I never would've tried this diet. A lot of resistance to this way of eating is psychological. It is weird to consume so much fat when you've been told and programmed for so long that fat was the enemy and caused so many problems with our health. What I like about Dr. Phinney and Dr. Volek is they are very science based and not ideologically based. They're methodical and they have the data to back it up and there are variations within this diet so there's flexibility.

      There are literally thousands of stories like yours. More and more, the science is proving this way of eating superior. But there are still many in the health field that are biased and use bad science to refute it. Time will tell, but proponents of this diet will fight to the bitter end.

      This video is as "scientific" as the blood type hype diets. They are overly defensive in claiming everyone is different and there's no one type of diet cliches. Why do they seem bent on justifying their aberrant diets? They ignore the fact that real carnivores use gluconeogenesis not ketosis. They tell stories ascot how they believe humans haven't adapted to carb based diets.

      If a person studies human anatomy and physiology at the college level, they will learn that the human body uses both gluconeogenesis and ketosis.
      The liver does gluconeogenesis to synthesize all the glucose that the body needs. That's needed because the human body has a few kinds of cells (red blood cells, etc.) that can only use glucose as fuel.

    I'm in Ketosis (2 months) and recently got a blood test to check on my thyroid. I have hypothyroidism. What surprised me is my free T3 and T4 and TSH are now in the middle of the normal range. The way of eating is curing my thyroid. Didn't know it would do that.

      @CutTheKillerCarbs 9 років тому +5

      +Kassie Eppig I have had several clients report that their thyroid function improved on a low-carbohydrate diet. I do not know the mechanism. However, it could possibly be due to an overall reduction in inflammation as shown by Phinney and Volek's work.

    • @Bungifun
      @Bungifun 7 років тому +2

      One of the things that change is that due to the absence of insuline or at least a much lower serum level, leptin (produced by the adipose tissue) now gets a better chance at reaching the brain. It has to compete with insuline for the receptors... As leptin reaches the brain, it can regulate the production of TRH better which in turn affects the TSH production. In short: high on fat -> higher production of leptin -> higher TRH -> higher TSH -> more T4 -> higher metabolism. If you have insuline high all the time, leptin doesn't get to your brain so well thus putting your body on a low metabolism. Low metabolism in itself is not bad, except if you have a high insuline it means you are eating carbs a lot which turn into fat. Accumulating fat and low energy consumption at the same time...

They both obviously have a bias toward ketosis, but when asked what the ideal diet is they essentially say "who the fuck knows, but this is what our data said for these subjects". It's a level of honesty that you generally just don't find in other dietary communities. I mean, look at someone like Michael Greger. He thinks he's god's gift to nutrition, but doesn't know how to interpret scientific data, and as a result he's completely pathological.

I lost 80 lbs and 3 sizes...my blood sugar is all in the normal range now. I got off Keto for 4 months still eating lower carb around 90 g and it was not working for me which didn’t surprise me...I am insulin resistance and it all make sense now how I got diagnosed type 2 diabetes at age of 31. East Asian tends to eat lots of rice, noodle, buns...you name it we eat it. Food pyramid is definitely making it worst for me personally...I am so happy to trust and learn about Keto, it literally save my life, so thankful! Also, I am going into carnivore diet now, just bought me some grass-fed rib-eyes! Ready to continue. When there’s a will there’s a way! I’m so done with being sick and tired all the time and counting calories and it was still not working. And my skin problems got so much better!! During transition I lost a lot of hair but they grow back better. This red pill definitely wake me up... :-) I was so wrong on my nutrition knowledge...wish I knew it earlier. I tested myself, as soon as I eat carbs, specifically sugar and crap like cookies, my allergies come right back...my headache also comes, mood swing, dry skin, and everything on the list...I am just glad to find what I should be eating...finally.

    QUESTION: Though excess protein can result in elevated blood glucose via gluconeogenesis (we all know numerous studies show this), does this elevated blood glucose necessarily result in fat storage and "kick you out of ketosis" especially in the absence of glycogen stores in the liver and skeletal muscles?
    The Bray 2012 study refutes this "excess protein equals fat storage" generalization unequivocally EVEN IN THE PRESENCE OF DIETARY CARBS. (Also my own experience with eating mostly just high protein, moderate fat, and zero/low carb has resulted in significant fat loss.)
    My hypotheses are either (i) excess protein counteracts catabolism since amino acids enter glycolysis eventually turning into pyruvate then aceytyl CoA so that it can enter the TCA cycle and then release ATP (ie energy) and/or (ii) there is no metabolic pathway at least that I know of (as with excess glucose in the presence of insulin) for amino acids to be converted into triglycerides. (And yes, I am aware that deamination and transamination of amino acids can but doesn't necessarily always result in conversion to lipids since glucose not just lipids can also be created and even so, it is only from the non-nitrogenous parts of the molecules.

      I already have the book and it was most helpful. I am about 3 months into my diet and as I go along I find myself eliminating more of my prior addictions, namely fruit and I almost have an aversion to bread which surprises me since that was my other craving. Sinister these addictions!! My first thing in the morning drink is distilled water about a quart, dash of stevia and 3-4 tablespoons of organic coconut oil, cinnamon then heat and sip all morning (my mornings are like from 2-6 am.) My other new addiction is some heavy cream, lots, poured over a few strawberries, maybe walnuts, stevia again (love that stuff!) and of course my wonderful coconut oil, cinnamon. Cool, and enjoy for a few hours of slow digestion on an empty stomach and between meals. No more energy spikes, no more crazy cravings, and a full sense of control over my diet and metabolism. I recommend coffee enemas for people starting this diet and indeed beyond. The fat stimulates the bile discharge into duodenum and the CM stimulates the liver to open up and release bile. The toxins leave with the bile therefore a lot of these reactions to beginning this diet may be ameliorated.

    I have a question. I am keto adapted and check my blood with a meter and it sometimes reads up to 4.2 ketones but my blood sugar is at around 70. I don't have diabetes and I feel fine but I see online that that is a dangerously high level of ketones. I'm in my 50's and a super active full time drummer and act and feel like I'm 20 something. Any advice? I can't find answers online without a diabetes angle. Should I do something about high levels even if I feel great?

    • @Rmartin689

      +Phil Cimino 4.2 is within the range for nutritional ketosis. I believe between 2-5 is optimal.

      +Phil Cimino I read that ketones rising high means you should eat a bit more.Makes sense since a little more protein and fat will increase insulin and hence lower ketone output.

    To all the naysayers, I don't think there is one diet that fits everyone. It all depends on your physiology, genetics, and goals. This may work for some, but not necessarily for all. It's worth listening to and you'll probably learn something even though it might not work for you.

    • @SteveP0412
      @SteveP0412 8 років тому +4

      +saladlamp Well, the standard (American) diet that the US, European and now the Indian, Middle East and Chinese population eats clearly does not "fit" them. 400 million plus diabetes sufferers and 1.6 billion overweight people!

      Phinney said this can work for everyone, but some people (about 10%) can eat a ton of carbs and retain good health. just adjust your carbs and fat ratio to suit your metabolism. HFLC, is really good for metabolically challenged people.

    The intolerant/tolerant terms are confusing because he's using carb intolerant to mean that your body uses carbs more efficiently to gain weight and carb tolerant to mean that your body uses carbs less efficiently to gain weight. Intuitively, it seems to me that those two terms should be reversed, but then maybe he's basing it on the insulin tolerance/intolerance concepts as those with such issues do tend to gain weight more with carbs than not.

  • @NewnotesJR
    @NewnotesJR 11 років тому

    It keeps persisting because there's a very large, very rich, very powerful animal rights interest community that benefits from people believing that carbohydrates are absolutely necessary, that they're the single most important nutrient the body needs. To that end, they have managed to dominate the nutrition education from grade school all the way through higher education.
    Most of the popular opinions that refuse to allow opposing views a fair say are because of political interests.

    There are different kinds of macular degeneration. Age Related Macular Degeneration is probably what you're thinking of. But there are others forms. Usually inherited. Young women, in particular, are prone to Idiopathic MD. There's evidence indicating that myopia is a risk factor for Wet MD in young women.
    That said, LCHF has shown itself to be slightly less ineffective than LFHC. In general, most diets fail. They're equally ineffective for the insulin sensitive. LCHF is better for insensitives.

      I use olive oil or mix bleu cheese with olive oil for dressing on my greens. I also saute spinach, onions, garlic, and peppers in coconut oil and make an omelette out of it. When I eat blueberries, my main fruit, I eat them in heavy cream. The cream helps slow the absorption of the carbs. I also put butter and coconut oil in my first cup of coffee of the day. Some people eat the coconut oil straight, but I didn't like that. It works good for cooking and adding to other foods. BTW, I only eat 2 meals a day for 6 days and fast one day. Very seldom do I get hungry. When I was trying the low fat, high carb diet my Dr and dietitian recommended, I was always starved.

      i think the key item in a keto nutrition is BUTTER (might as well be coconutoil or whaterver you like best)
      I use butter in every meal and i eat 5 times per day, sometimes 6. I would recommend to eat about 20 grams of protein per meal. My meals look like:
      60g swisscheese with 15g of butter or
      100g Salmon with 30g of butter or
      60g Salami with 15g of Butter or
      broth with 200g of broccoli and sausage and 20g of butter in it, or
      steak with 400g spinach in like 40g of butter or
      the classical eggs with sausage plus 20g of butter, or
      50g of the fattiest bacon i can find (needs no butter) or
      3 eggs with spinach plus the butter
      Salad with plenty of oliveoil and mayonese with sausage and cheese
      Often 3 of my daily meals are swisscheese with butter. It's very convenient during work, don't even need to stop working. This is what i can come up with after 14 months into ketosis. End of the day i net about 100 to 120g of protein and 100g of butter.

      @Repulver 10 років тому

      Amine Dassouki swiss cheese has about 40% fat, not very much indeed, thats why i add butter to it and eat it like a sandwich. I read somewhere that swiss cheese has the most amount of B12 vitamine. And also i am swiss so i am kinda obligated to it ;D .. I will try muenster though, din't know that one

      Thadeka Deka I dont eat big meals during the day because it would drop my ketonlevel dramaticly for hours. At work i like a high ketonlevel of around 1 or higher. While measuring my blood over a period of time, i found that i respond very quickly to protein. If i eat more then say 20 or 25g of protein in one meal, my ketonlevel drops. 4 eggs with sausage and my ketonlevel drops from 1.6 to 0.5 within an hour. Typically i eat those kind of meals in the evening.

      he is talking about high oleic canola oil High oleic oil is any oil that is high in monounsaturated fats. Olive and canola oil are naturally high in monounsaturated fat, but they are also high in polyunsaturated fats which mean they are not very shelf-stable. In recent years, scientists have developed sunflower (and other) oils that are bred to be high in monounsaturated fats and low in polyunsaturated fats so they can be used in products that need to be shelf-stable.
