I appreciate everyone's comments in my videos because they allow me to get a better idea of what exactly it is you all would like to see. In this case, many of you were concerned that this receiver needed a recap. Well, what better channel to look further into this and fix the issue? I also performed a small modification to the receiver where I converted one of the unswitched outlets on the back of the receiver to a switched outlet.

I liked the whole series, thanks for doing it! I’ve got the really big version of that Sony sitting on a shelf here, been meaning to dig it out and give it a spin for a while. I forget the model number but it’s 70 or 75 wpc and it weighs a ton. Got it back in the early days of Craigslist when you could buy things like that for $100-150 bucks.

One thing I wanted to mention from your last video. When you were turning the volume pot and it was showing a difference in output between the two channels and you had to adjust the balance in order to get them even. Then you changed the sine wave frequency going into the Sony and the difference in the channels was even greater. You were blaming it on the volume pot, but the volume pot isn’t frequency dependent. Try it at 100 hz and then 10,000 hz without touching the balance and see if the differences are the same, they won’t be. You have a channel with frequency rolloff likely due to faulty caps.

General purpose analog signal generators typically aren't all that good in the sinewave department. The successor of this particular instrument, the 4017A, is rated to

Speaker sounds 'right' to me. People in the comments saying otherwise, but this is pretty typical and period correct sounding for an average Hi Fi unit of the day. A lot of people don't understand also how far speaker technology has adapted and changed and playing certain modern music on old Hi Fi units can give unsatisfying sound. There are so many more bottom end and top end frequencies that are now more audible in modern recordings that trying to push those into older speakers that weren't designed for it can lead to 'distortion' or a 'fluffy' sound especially once you start turning up the volume.
They certainly weren't designed with 'digital' in mind.
Best to hookup an old tape or a turntable, or utilize the lovely radio, and really enjoy it for what it is.

I love the Sony equipment from this time period. I have a complete 4 channel (quadraphonic) setup that I bought new, that with some tlc and serviceing over the years works fabulously and sounds great!

Test gear needs love sometimes too. Dirty switches and pots will introduce distortion in the signal. Hopefully it's a easy fix.

I'm going to do the same thing with the Bluetooth receiver that I use for my Pioneer SX999, I do believe my receiver has a switched outlet in the rear panel. I may make an adapter cord that has a switch that I can route to the front so I can turn the Bluetooth off, but still use the stereo (multiple phones are paired to the receiver)

I'm pretty sure that speaker was supposed to come with. some fucked up crossover device or something. I think it was part of an all in one style system. Maybe I'm describing it wrong, but I'm pretty sure I'm correct! I am setting up a system using speakers that I think are the same and am possibly going to just put cool 4 inch drivers in them or something and yes it's to setup in my girlfriends bedroom and she loves the way they look!

Hi Mr. Ah-Fix-It, sorry I did not get your name. I am your current subscriber. Somehow, you got me really interested in working on these things. I hope you can help me with a small question. I have a Sansei QR-6500 kept blowing fuse, so I gave up on it and left it sitting for awhile. I currently moved it out after watching many of your videos and decided to pull it out to see. I bought a Variac as you shown in one of your video. Run the amp up to about 30V. Then smoke coming out at one of the terminal of the transformer. The terminals (purple ones) was detached from the connectors. If you don't mind, can you tell me what was wrong with the components? Is it because of the filter capacitors failed before loading the voltage to the transformer. Thank you so much

Your frequency generator must not neccessarily be broken. I guess that this unit internally uses a triangle generator, the sinusoidal signal is then formed via a resistor-diode network and small peaks of the former triangle may remain. For audio purposes a wein brigde oscillator with low THD is a much better choice - or a pc soundcard or cellphone solution like you already used.

That could be speaker buzz, but it could also be abysmal MP3 music mangling. You need to test it with a tone generator.

Inside is a bad idea, since this stuff produces a ton of digital noise. Better keep it as far away as possible if you like clean tuner reception and low noise floor.

I had a pair of old speakers from the 70s that didn't have much bass anymore and after checking, I found that the material used between the cones and the frame had hardened. I replaced the woofers and the speakers sounded good again. Maybe let your wife take that one for now, but keep looking for another one or maybe a pair that she can have instead. In the meantime, she has something to listen to.

@@jaygosch8705 A pair of new or reconed JBL Control One doesn't cost much, takes the same space as this single junker speaker and i'm sure, she'll love the sound of a pair of Control One.
If they are available in the US, a pair of a mid sized model of 2way vintage Canton speakers is always a good choice too and even cheaper - at least in Germany. Never had to recone a Canton yet. They're sealed with good quality rubber. On JBL the foam seals last 10 years max. Every used JBL is broken. The sound for money is worth the repair though.
