    I must concur with you picking up the Hornby MK 3 Sleeper coaches (Just for now). My suggestion (For what its worth) Would be to not weather them at all, Keep the Boxes and sell them at a flea market at a later date, after you can purchase the new models available. You should be able to get most of your money back anyway!

    Good to see those TEAs navigating all those peco streamline points without issue. I'm now in the process of removing my peco set-track points from the fiddleyard so wagons such as these can run without derailment.

    • @DeanPark
      @DeanPark  2 роки тому +2

      Really? That really shouldn’t be necessary for new products. I did see your video and was surprised by the derailment. I obviously know from first hand experience that there is nothing wrong with your point work and track laying so how can these wagons not navigate them?! Are they only for 3rd radius and above?!
      Glad to see you’ve solved your squeaking. Mine Was driving me mad!

    • @cavalexmodels2081

      Yes out of the box they are 3rd radius and above. To negotiate second radius you need to remove the very end portion of brake gear on the chassis beyond the discharge pipes as these stop the bogie turning enough for 2nd radius.

    Hi, thanks for another great update. On the Mk1 brake coach the frosted window you called the toilet is actually the guards compartment. In there is the handbrake, vacuum handle, seat, desk, etc. The toilet is located at the other end of the coach and has a ventilator in its window.

    It looks like the tankers are better value than the sleepers. I remember when you used to get some stock from ebay and bet you could of found enough sleepers there as it seems you only got them as a temporary rake you may not use once the MK4 stock is out. Graphite is great for lubricating bearings I use Yale powder and just drop a few grains on the end of the using a small file, it seems to fall into the axle cup OK so no need to remove the wheels each time.

    Heh. When you ran the tank train at track speed those squeaking journals reminded me of the sound the giant ants made in the classic horror movie "Them!". The Eberhard Junction solution of a wee bit of grease inspired me to solve a similar problem on my bobber (2 axle) transfer caboose that way. If the grease wears away I'll try some graphite. Thanks as always for your excellent videos! Cheers from Wisconsin.

    Interesting comment about the Lima mouldings being used for the sleepers. Recently brought a couple of Lime mk1s on a well known auction site and for the price I paid, still pretty good models and representations of mk1s. At three times the price and sold as new, not really acceptable, considering how good other models are now.

      @DeanPark  2 роки тому

      Hi. Thanks. It wasn’t really a full blown review like the TEA. So I didn’t bother. But if I was to give them an overall rating it would be 2.5/5…. The score being dragged down by the lack of detail and high price point.

  • @georgethomas7814
    @georgethomas7814 2 роки тому +1

    You have the same squeaking that Richard did at Everard Junction. Clever use of graphite. The gapping issue for tighter curves needs more of a highlighting, not to many people can widen points and curves to get the results EJ and you have.

    • @DeanPark
      @DeanPark  2 роки тому +1

      Hi, yeah the pencil did improve them… to some degree! I could only report on the curves I have on my layout. Everard has tighter curved at his storage yard which these can’t cope with.

    • @cavalexmodels2081
      @cavalexmodels2081 2 роки тому

      The kinematic couplers allow these to traverse tight curves no problem, the close coupling isn't an issue, its the brake detail on the undeframe that limits bogie travel and hence derails in 2nd radius and below. The small portion of brake gear just bogieside of the discharge pipes can be removed if you have tighter curves.

    Maybe a spot of weathering, similar to the Scot Rail stock, to the test train coaches will "improve" the look? Nice review of the TEAs and fix for the squeaky wheels. The squeakiest wheel gets the graphite! They look nice, but after seeing Richard's review , they'd not like many of my corners.

    To add to your comments on the Mark 3 sleepers, I’ve bought four to replace my old Lima versions and wasn’t expecting much improvement from Hornby as I knew it was the old tooling. But having opened up the first one to transfer the lighting from the old ones (no easy task as the roof and window assembly has to be extremely carefully prised off) I was astounded to find a seating insert inside, even the original Lima interior made some attempt to represent the corridor and compartments in the coach. Very disappointing Hornby.

  • @beckster181
    @beckster181 2 роки тому

    Everad Junction also did a review of the TEA wagons and had same problem with the squeaking and the back to back spacings he went the plastic compatible lube route with super small amount and was successful with fixing it for the time of testing without any sight of it returning. His other problem with them on his layout is entring his storage yards as to help save space he has used Peco curved points and he has found that these TEA wagons will take the outer track perfectly but every time he tries to take the inner line they will derail. Just added this so any that had not seen his review could be warned about the point issue which he ONLY has on the curved ones the rest are no problem and as he stated he thinks it might be more an issue with the points and not with the wagons.

    It's a shame that hornby are still charging full price for what is essential an old model. The weathering on the coaches is absolutely fantastic. Loving the new cavalex wagons definitely a market leader hornby take note.

    • @DeanPark
      @DeanPark  2 роки тому +1

      Yes it is disappointing.
      However Hornby have produced a coach with a good, accurate decoration, it also runs well and without issue. And isn’t that some of what we want from a model?
      While hornby have got their issues, quality control being one of them, they can produce a good product and have many years proven track record of doing so.
      While they need to look at some of the newer companies on the scene , it’s also true that the newer companies should look at what hornby do well.
      I don’t think accurascale and Cavalex (due to their size) are market leading just yet. I’d still say bachmann are the benchmark in terms of range, detail/quality and running characteristics that these companies need to aim for.
      I’m excited to see the new Deltic as I think that model could give the new bachmann 47 a run for its money as one of the best mass produced ready to run models ever made.

    While I like and appreciate Cavalex going that extra mile for detail, the price point is that bit extra that it's just too much for me, especially if you want to put together a lengthy prototypical rake of wagons together. It's also a touch disappointing that there's no discount on buying a 3 pack over a single wagon. Personal gripes though, they look absolutely fantastic and something I'd love on my layout

    • @DeanPark
      @DeanPark  2 роки тому

      That’s a good point, usually with a triple pack you’d get a few quid off. I’m sure they’ve worked out the margins and decided on a price.

      @maringarvanovic8011 2 роки тому

      I was surprised by the price. I thought they would be more. They are a lot less than the Bachmann ones and a hell of a lot less than the Revolution ones.

    • @cavalexmodels2081
      @cavalexmodels2081 2 роки тому

      Hi Simon, I would argue that these are very competitively priced in the currrent market. It is getting more and more expensive to produce rolling stock and this gets even more expensive when we have extra detail to consider, both tooling wise and for assembly and finish, we have always tried very hard to keep our prices affordable for the standard that you're getting for your buck. As for the multipack question, you have to consider that we are not providing triple packs to increase sales and as such reward customers for buying more, we are offering multipacks to allow modellers to obtain differently decorated models with varying decals and running numbers. If we were able to offer discounts on a pack of three then we we would be charging too much for the singles and would offer the models cheaper for everyone in the first place.

    • @SimonWitt
      @SimonWitt 2 роки тому +1

      @@cavalexmodels2081 fair points, especially on wanting to provide the same price point for everyone no matter how many wagons they're buying, that's very commendable thinking about it. My personal issue is that while they are competitively priced especially for the detail, my spending budget hasn't been increasing anywhere near market price increases so I need to be very frugal with what I buy. I'd love a full rake of coaches being pulled by an HST or 91 for example, but not at the cost it'd be for a full train.
      It's not a case of me saying your wagons in particular are expensive, just that the hobby itself is expensive and I personally need to pick and choose carefully what I go for. Like I said though, I would love some TEA wagons on my layout, it'd be a case of saving up some pennies for when they're on top of my wishlist

    Looks great. Very surprised those tankers are so squeaky straight out of the box; if they'd used brass bearings (as I'd expect for the price), I doubt they would've been this noisy.
    I recently discovered that my KR Models Consett iron ore wagons had been shedding their bogie screws, so that's something I had to fix last night which is incredibly annoying. I need hunt couplings for that rake too.

    • @cavalexmodels2081
      @cavalexmodels2081 2 роки тому

      Brass bearings are not really the answer, as Dave has pointed out there is paint in the bearing holes which is not ideal and wasn't on the sample when we were trouble shooting. The answer is to not paint the pinpoints in the first place which we will address in future runs. However blanket suggesting brass bearings (and citing the price as a reason for it despite the model being very competitvely priced against silimar models) is both an additional item and process that could inject further potential issues regarding their fitment and ease of remedial work for the customer should something not quite be right. Plastic pinpoints are a proven design, and work, so there's no need to change that. Indeed our PGA hoppers are probably the most free running model that you can buy and that uses them with no issues.

    • @DeanPark
      @DeanPark  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Lapis, glad you enjoyed the video.
      I’m really pleased with the walls and even tolerate those aged mk3 sleepers lol. Which are well decorated by hornby.
      With regard to my TEA. I gave them a 4 ‘arrow’ rating as they are a well designed and presented model. I am impressed by the product Cavalex have delivered.
      The squeaking was an issue I noticed early in test. I actually contacted one of the Cavalex team who suggested the pencil solution. Which had improved the running and noise on all but a couple of the axles. Which is fine.
      Graphite/carbon is a great lubricant in mechanisms. You get graphite paste to use on Kadee couplers which is plastic compatible. I may use that.
      Overall a great looking product. But a tweak here and a check there might be needed before running them on your layout. It’s good practice to check back to backs on any new product anyway. :-)
      Cheers
      Dave

    I wanted to know why don’t they dig a tunnel and do an extension for the main line Train so they extend the unused abandoned underground stations.
    Why couldn’t they use the part D78 Stock train doors on the sides and also restructure the front face of the A60 and A62 stock and remix and make them all together and also redesign them overhead line and also make them into 5 cars per unit and also having 2 Disabled Toilets on those 5 cars per unit A60 and A62 stock trains and also convert the A60 and A62 stock trains into a Scania N112, Volvo TD102KF, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXC, Gardner 6LXB And Gardner 8LXB Diesel Engines and also put the Loud 7-Speed Voith Gearboxes in the A60 and A62 stock and also modernise the A60 and A62 stock and make it into a 11 car per unit so it could have less doors, more tables, computers and mobile phone chargers.

    Why couldn't they extend the Piccadilly line and also build a brand-new underground train stations so it could go even further right up to Clapton, Wood Street and also make another brand new tunnel train stations in Chingford and could they extend the DLR.

    Do you have a turn around loop, or do you have to physically move the loco to the other end yourself? I was thinking about before you showed the loco in the other end of the train.
    Keep up the good work, soon be time to take the locos off and into storage for the summer, how long does it take you to do this?

      All railway rolling stock has a code to identify its type. These codes are used so the correct types of vehicles are selected when making up a train. The letter T is a Tanker the 2nd letter is the weight category E being 100 tons and the A means it is air braked.

    Hmmm, not so sure those tanks ran to Bedworth Dave, it was a Murco terminal back in the 80s and I do not recall seeing them there to be fair, happy to be corrected though. Probably the best known working was the Lindsey-Langley. The 91 test train looks the business even given the ridiculously out of date/over priced Hornby offering.

    Id favour Hornby retooling those sleepers by doing some kind of mash up with the new sliding door tooling to give a decent mk3a over the Oxford Rail skinny versions that look awful imho.

    Great work in completing the wall...it really does look good....
    One observation i would make concerns modelling graffiti.
    It really does beggar belief that the modelling of graffiti does anything for a layout, or for society come to that.
    Graffiti is nothing more than a blot on our environment......
    The half-wits who spoil our environment....and our real railways with graffiti should not be encouraged...
    The wall could easily have been given some character with the addition of some weeds..or grass at the base rather than graffiti.

      Hi, yeah I didn’t want to spoil the fronts of the walls with it but as the area at the top will be an area where people would go to hang out and get up to no good, I added a limited layer of some tags. Some of these will be obscured by bushes but I wanted a little urban graffiti to replicate an area near my local station. Cheers

      Yes I agree. I loath the saltire now, as they hijacked it for their narrow minded cause. Sadly people don’t see their destruction of our nation.
