I punched it in, found you and deduced that my wife had accidently taken the keys for both our 2.0T and VR-6 Passats. She was using the wrong fob. Because of your video I did not have to go out and get her.
But I am definitely going to get another two key fobs from Amazon or eBay for 14-15$ like you said just in case again thank you so much your a life saver
Read much? Did I say "disable the immobilizer"? No. I said "effectively disable". And that it is exactly what I did. It is akin to removing all the pins from a lock set. You still need the key to turn the cylinder but any key will work. Sorry to have wasted your time.
Instead of using the fob, depending on finger size, push then in, push the 2 teeth at the sides in that free's the fob carrier and push more and it will turn on the ignitions then press slightly further and the starter will engage, also the later b6 had a immo chip soldered on the circuit board of the keyfob immo 5 on
Yes you're correct that you could actuate the ignition with your fingers but it will only start if you have placed the RFID grain of rice like I showed in the video.

Having the same issue. Going to try it. Did your transponder chip stay in place or did heat in the dash weaken the adhesive? I'm just afraid if it comes loose, then where would it fall?
The angle of the ignition switch is such that it creates a cradle. The glue just keeps it in place. I had some GOOP laying around and used that. Not sure how long it held...I sold the car.
The Jettas and GTIs did not come with that kind of key. The Jetta and the GTi came with volkswagens traditional flip key:) just wanted to give y a heads up so you don’t accidentally mis inform somebody
Since the chip stays always in ignition and car can be started even with fingers is it possible to install some sort of hidden kill switch to shut down ignition lock?
I suppose it is possible. For me, the door locks and low value of the car made it unnecessary. I bought the car for $1600. That's pretty low incentive to steal, especially when it means setting off the car alarm while breaking in. Of course no one needs to know you made this mod so, its even more of a gamble to a would be thief. The ignition module is in the dash and has a ~10 wire jack. I'm sure one of the wires is +12v power. If you could figure out which one was then you could just simply put a toggle on it.
vehicle passat cluster show immobilizer adaptation during key adaptation but key does not adapted where is problem? Key remote also not working but led light blink on key or key cell is fine?
Hello I have a 2004 vw polo that has a standard key that has broken with metal-blade part and black-plastic-chip part, what would be the procedure if I buy a full-set of locks and a key from a salvage yard to swap over new locks and a key as cheaply as possible. Would I need vagcom or VCDS and is it possible to obtain them free. Great video thankyou so much.
Hello thankyou so much for replying back. It's a standard/normal key with a metal-blade and a round black-plastic part that contains the immobiliser chip, no switches on key.
@@sloopycat1954 that's a very inexpensive key to get copied. You can probably find blanks online. Try getting a hardware store to cut it first. Smaller mom and pop type store is more likely than big box stores. If no luck, try a locksmith. If all else fails resort to the car dealer. You could also try just fixing what you have. JB weld epoxy putty comes to mind. It works like play dough, sticks like epoxy, and cures hard in 5 minutes.
@@muckleyj is this not the same as just getting the key programmed or is this also different to reporgraming the rice chip ? I take it you only need to programed to open doors ?

How do you find the FCCID number if you took the fob apart and it is not there? I looked with a magnifying glass. You need the proper key fob to program it.
Sorry, what are you trying to do? The ebay part number is listed in the description. That should get you a new circuit board and plastic case. With a VagCOM you can program the ebay item to unlock, lock, and alarm the car.
Hey Josh I just bought a used Volkswagen Eos 2007 and I drove it a couple of times but just last week The symbol with the car and key pop up on the dashboard and it says immobilizer active. The car starts up but turns right off seconds later. And i only have and been using one key. Is there a way to fix this without having to spend a crazy amount of money?
I don't know. What type of key does it take? There were lots of recalls on the passat for the ignition module. The dealer would replace the module for free. Maybe call them and give your VIN?
Hi Josh, i found your video by trying to understand how to remove the key barrel (where you put the key), so i can repair the plastic cover that moves up and down when you insert the key. Do you know that? Good video
Just stick your fingers in the slot and give it a jerk. You'll probably bend the metal tabs on either side. Just unbend them prior to reinstalling the cover.
Not usually. If you put it in a microwave oven, or set it on an induction cook top, or it experienced an EMP, then the RFID chip might be damaged. If it gets damaged, you'll need the dealer or locksmith to program a new one. $350 at the dealer.
Question…. I purchased a new shell for my daughters keyfob bc a button was broken. New battery, the black RFID chip (grain of rice) and mother board was switched over the new “fob housing”…. I can use it to crank the car …. BUT I CANNOT get it to lock/unlock or pop trunk!!! PLEASE HELP!!!! How were you able to unlock the car the one you have??
Sorry Brittany, it sounds like you did everything correctly. Maybe the "motherboard" was damaged during removal? Try putting it back in the original fob housing? Is the little red light illuminating when you push a button? If not maybe the battery is dead or not making proper contact... Maybe it is upside down? When I got my new fobs I programmed the new motherboard with a Vag-Com. I linked in the description. The Vag-Com is available for ~$150 on ebay but it is an expensive tool for just one key. Maybe a locksmith would be willing to program it for relatively cheap (less than $50?)
Thank you so much for your reply. The motherboard most definitely works… all buttons when pressed “light up” the fob (tiny red button). What you did confirm is that a scan tool is needed to reprogram the fob to the “radio frequency” the car is putting out. Will definitely call around to find a locksmith tomorrow!! Trying to avoid the dealership at all costs… they won’t an ungodly amount!! Thanks again 🤗
@@ThatSouthernPeach, it would be weird that the original motherboard would need to be reprogrammed. If it worked in the old shell then it should work fine in the new.
Hi Josh, i need your help please. i have a vw passat cc 2015. when i'm driving and stop the car and put the gear in neutral and remove the foot from the clutch the car shuts down because of the star stop system, so far everything is normal, but soon after immobilizer activated message, I have to remove the key from the ignition and put it back in for it to turn on. this has always happened when the start stop system is activated. when I deactivate the start stop on the button, the immobilizer doesn't appear. I've already changed the key for the second key, I changed the batteries but the same thing keeps happening all the time.
I'm not entirely sure but it seems like maybe this is an intentional "feature"? The only thing I can think of is to flip the key over? Maybe see if you can remove the "grain of rice" and place it closer to the IMMOBILIZER RFID receiver? These immobilizer systems have had lots of recalls too. Maybe check with a dealer?
I have a 2006 Volkswagen passat 3.6. And I been having the same problems. Everyone telling me different things the locksmith said he don't think I need a new key. Which I kinda believe because when the car isn't starting it pops up a red steering wheel and says "steering wheel column lock defective" but it also says "immobilizer active" also so since its doing both of those things. I have no idea what needs to actually be fixed. Any ideas?
There is a recall on the key module. I would call a VW dealer and provide them with your VIN. They can tell you what recalls are pending for your vehicle. Usually at no cost to yourself.
Yes, they told me its a recall on the airbag. The airbag light is on so I'm planning on getting that fixed. But for the other problems no luck. Everyone online with the same problems as me says the same thing. The dealership charged them a bill of $2000 to fix it. I really don't want to pay that considering I only bought it for $1500 but I don't want to sell it and put this problem on anyone else🤦
Hey Josh, I bought a used Volkswagen cc 2012 had it 1 week and every light in the dash came on and it is missing so bad it won't go even if you floor the gas it just sputters please help
One of the biggest weaknesses in the 2.0 turbo is the high pressure fuel pump (HPFP) tappet follower. Google search it. Humble mechanic does a couple videos about it. Since it is new to you it would be a good first thing to replace and even if it isn't the problem it will be good insurance. Just checking but you did use the 93 octain fuel right? Double check me but it was a must in my 2006. If not you might not have too much choice but to buy an octain booster to bump up the juice. 🤷♂️
If you want remote entry buttons to work then the circuit board has to be programmed to the car, but only once. Think of it like your garage door opener being programmed. If you buy used keys (fobs) from eBay or the junk yard then the circuit board will need programmed to match your car. You need a Ross-Tech Vag-Com and follow the link in the description.
About to attempt surgery...so it still needs to be in range to work ..but actually being INSIDE the fob is what's throwing the immobilizer active code?
There could be other things throwing the immobilizer code... Like a bad ignition module or and ignition module that has not been adapted to the car. But if you buy and aftermarket fob or replacement fob then the new RFID chip (grain of rice) will need to be programmed to the car or the old one removed from the old fob and installed in the new fob.
@@muckleyj thanks for responding J...ok so u took out the chip..Crazy question....whats the difference in it being in the fob or being outside the fob taped next to the ignition...i mean it doesnt know its outside the fob...and the car doesnt know its outside the fob either..right? not sure if im making sense lol...but tell me why does it work?
@@NubianLion7 you're absolutely correct. As long as the chip is near the car's ignition receiver (in the key hole for the fob) then the immo4 will detect the chip AND validate that it is not just "a chip" but also a chip that the car has been programmed to recognize. In my case I only had one working fob but wanted to have a spare and one for my wife. Getting 2 fobs from the dealer would have cost over $600. By gluing the chip inside the cover for the ignition switch it was kinda like leaving the fob in the ignition but without anyone being able to tell. Of course, without knowing exactly how to operate the ignition plunger without a fob, it would be difficult to start the car even if you knew the chip was glued in. So I had bought new fob cases from ebay and they were all capable of starting the car. Getting used motherboards for the fobs or finding used fobs with good motherboards allowed me to transplant the boards into my empty fob cases. With a Vag-Com I programmed the circuit board to lock and unlock the doors.

Hey Josh! A little off subject here but I need to know how to locate the part that will make my mobile phone connect via Bluetooth to my stereo to use my phone button on the multi-function steering wheel control in my 2009 VW CC. Do you have any idea what it is called or how to research it? Many thanks!
I believe what you are looking for is integral to the stereo. The entire car runs on a common system called CAN-bus. You can find aftermarket stereos and devices that interface very nicely. I put one in my car after the video was released. Big improvement for only about $100. I tried to find a link but it looks like that specific product is not available anymore. You can see a similar item in the link below. www.ebay.com/itm/113858450994
@@Feddy99, pretty sure that's a low oil pressure indicator. It will most likely be caused by low oil level. If you check and the level is good then it could be something a simple as a oil pressure sender or electrical connection between the sender and the car's computer. Of course if the filter is clogged then that could cause a low pressure too. Check the oil level and top up first. FWIW I have to add about 1 qt every time I fill up with gas. The turbo seals are probably bad on mine.
How were you able to pair the key fob remote lock and unlock with the car? I want to create a secondary key only for locking and unlocking. (Not for starting the car)
It's in the description section below the video. Lots of links. I think this is the one that answers your questions. ua-cam.com/video/xLKNg4yioFk/v-deo.html

@@muckleyj loll thanks for reply. Had to scrap that piece of shit by now. It ended up being the central control module a slew European car mechanics all kept saying they could do it. Bam then they would say gotta go to dealership it was so shitty. It wasn't getting fuel to start and sending me and the different mechanics a slew of fake codes that did seem like possible issues until I finally have one realize none of that bs like the fuel pump modules were issue even though I was throwing the small parts like the modules I could do my self. I thought it was going to be the ecu or can bus because the water thay accumulates from leaf buildup and carpets. But if small chance mechanic was wrong I did try to to toy with the idea it was in safety accessory mode running on min because the ac and tons of other accessories were out too. I think my guy was right so I wasn't paying dealership and can't get the parts used for that. A new accessory would break daily the longer i couldn't get correct voltages. For example eventually I couldnt turn the locks or even pop trunk it drove and didnt want to shut trunk since rhe trrunk pop aas broken it had been fine. I got on pkwy it blew up cracked the windsheild and ripped the hood leg off and bent hood. So more reasons i had to scrap. since It had started to be 2 months of no car and the inside looked like a piece of shit by that point becuase when it rained the water didn't escape even out the drains at all since it was still. I don't know how to fix that. If anything can be done it will probably be accomplished with VAG-COM or VCDS from Ross-Tech. Maybe the transmission just needs to have an ADAPTATION?
question is the plastic key actually programed? I purchased a extra fob and I have seen yours and other videos on how to program the fob itself. to replace on lost... So a locksmith can cut me a new key.. That will really only be used to unlock the door and gas cap etc.. but that key does not have any coding?
The plastic part that is what actually attaches to your keyring and allows you to lock the glove box, rear seats, gas cap, and trunk (it also let's you manually unlock the drivers side door) - that piece of plastic does not have an RFID or any other electronic components that are programmed or would need to be. You can find those blanks for about $2 on ebay. Buy a bunch. The key machine at ACE took a lot of care and repeated tries to get a working copy. It's not like cutting a brass blank.
Hey Josh please get back to me with a reply I just bought a 06 vw, almost spun out on the highway. After i Gained control, my electric brake malfunction sign came on and and says airbag malfunction and also it just out of no where started a "exceed limit 20 mpg" now I can't drive over 20
You need a VAG-COM from ROSS-TECH to scan the codes and possibly do an Adaptation. I'm guessing that the wheel speed sensors lost electrical connection or just went bad. These are typically integrated into the bearing hubs. 🤷♂️ I'm really just taking a stab in the dark.

Hello Josh, could you please tell me how to put cover of that remote? (the one that you take off easily on 0:59 second on this video, written engine/start stop) My service take it off but they couldn't put it back.. How to do it?
There are 2 small metal tabs on opposite sides of the cover that act as barbs to hold it in place. They tend to bend about 180° when the cover is first removed. They are not supposed to be bent - just straight. If you straighten them you should find that the cover will now be retained. Get the horizontal alignment right the first time because re-alignment will require removal and then the tabs will bend again.
@@muckleyj I think left one is already bend.. Should I make it straight again or how to do it? Could you please help me visually once you're available please? :( my instagram: omurbusy
Assuming that the cover was removed I can almost guarantee that the tabs ARE bent as you indicate. If so, they will be U shaped and the ends will face into the dash instead of straight with ends facing towards the driver. Just unbend them so that they are relatively straight. Use tweezers or needle nose pliers. They don't have to be perfect.
Hey, I have a spare key but it doens't have the immobilizer and I lost my original keys. I start the car with the spare key and it turns after 2 seconds and says "no key" do you know how I can bypass this?
Sorry man. I think you are stuck with going to the dealer. By going I mean towing the car. Sucks. Once you get a good working key you can employ my trick to make multiple keys work....ie make you own keys.
There are three parts to these "keys". First is the plastic housing and buttons. These empty cases can be bough on eBay for about $20. As an empty case the buttons won't lock/unlock the doors. If you put the empty case into the push to start ignition it will fit and it will engage as though it is starting the car. But! The car won't start. On the dash you'll see a message that says Immobilizer Active. This is because you are missing the second part that makes up these keys - the little grain of rice (RFID Chip). These chips are what match the plastic case to that specific car. They are also the most expensive part to program if you need a new key made. If you have an old trashed out key you can move the chip from the old to the new and now when you attempt to use the "empty" case from ebay, it will start the car. In my video I simply show how to glue that grain of rice to the ignition switch so that it defeats the immobilizer to allow use of any plastic key housing. Of course these empty plastic cases still don't lock/unlock the doors since they are missing the third part - the circuit board. Any old circuit board from a used old key in the junkyard or on eBay can be reprogrammed to lock/unlock the doors. The reprogramming is done with VCDS vag-com from Ross-Tech. The device is about $150 on ebay and useful for lots of other mods and repairs. You might want to check out the links in the description.
@@muckleyj ok I think I got it. Buy another key fob from eBay or 2. And reprogram them to my specific vehicle using the program you mentioned. Right? Lol I’m sorry I’m handy but the most I’ve done with the fob is replace the battery. I can do a lot of mechanical stuff but this is stumping me 😂

Greetings Josh! **This is very urgent!** VW Passat 2010, my original key got stuck inside and Immobilizer active message is coming. I was able to pull it out somehow but it gets locked again if I insert it. I cannot start the car. Please help urgently!!
To get it out you can pull the shift lever "latch" repeatedly. You'll hear the steering column solenoid click each time. This should allow you to remove the key. It is locking in the ignition because the RFID chip "grain of rice" isn't being read and interpreted by the ignition system. There are a couple recalls and TSBs about this issue. If this was a working key and it suddenly stopped working I would try talking to the dealer. If this is a new key then it isn't properly coded to the car.
Josh of All Trades thanks for the reply! I have two original keys. The first one may be malfunctioning. But now since the ignition is in the immobiliser state the second key is not working as well. But is there any way to deactivate the immobiliser or start the car without going to the dealer now? The dealers are bunch of crooks. (Its a manual Passat b6)
I didn't realize that these cars came with manual transmissions. I don't know how to help. Maybe type the clutch the same way I'm pressing the button? Or try holding the clutch and then shifting in and out of first gear?

The Jettas and GTIs did not come with that kind of key. The Jetta and the GTi came with volkswagens traditional flip key:) just wanted to give y a heads up so you don’t accidentally mis inform somebody
OK.

Do the eBay blanks still lock the car with the immobiliser glued in place in the car ?
Yes. You can transfer an old circuit board from an old key or use the Ross-Tech device to program the new circuit board that comes with the eBay key.

On the old fob, does the grain of rice burn out and need replacing?

There are recalls on the IMMO modules. Go to a different dealer or search the internet for recalls on your VIN.
Hey Josh,
I bought a used Volkswagen cc 2012 had it 1 week and every light in the dash came on and it is missing so bad it won't go even if you floor the gas it just sputters please help
Do we need to reprogram key buttons after we swapped the immobilizer chip?
If you want remote entry buttons to work then the circuit board has to be programmed to the car, but only once. Think of it like your garage door opener being programmed. If you buy used keys (fobs) from eBay or the junk yard then the circuit board will need programmed to match your car. You need a Ross-Tech Vag-Com and follow the link in the description.
Hey Josh my key fob refuses to come out of my ignition on my 2006 vw Passat 2.0 help
Check out the video between 1:35 and 1:45. Basically squeeze the thumb button on the gear shift and that will trigger the ignition to release the key.
Thanks so much it worked ❤️
Glad it helped
About to attempt surgery...so it still needs to be in range to work ..but actually being INSIDE the fob is what's throwing the immobilizer active code?
There could be other things throwing the immobilizer code... Like a bad ignition module or and ignition module that has not been adapted to the car. But if you buy and aftermarket fob or replacement fob then the new RFID chip (grain of rice) will need to be programmed to the car or the old one removed from the old fob and installed in the new fob.
Immobilizer 4 is just the version of immobilizer that Volkswagen put in this model of car.

@@Feddy99, pretty sure that's a low oil pressure indicator. It will most likely be caused by low oil level. What do you recomandation is?
Do you have any video how to program that remote to open and close the doors?

@@muckleyj Hahahaah I broke left one :D I think I need to buy new cover if I find.. :D
The junk yard is your best bet. TBH you could use a little mastic type glue. Goop or door seal adhesive.

@@muckleyj thanks for the advice appreciate it
Good idea, still working?
Yep no problems.
So buy a new key and take the chip out to put in the other? Or just buy a new key

If this was a working key and it suddenly stopped working I would try talking to the dealer. If this is a new key then it isn't properly coded to the car.

We just had a vehicle in that needed lock, then needed the module. We won't know until we put the column lock in first. If it needs the module, it is an additional-$977.00 total parts, labor and tax. I do have to order the part. Please let me know how you want to proceed. Thank you and sorry it turned out like this...Anne

Does your car have the exact same ignition switch as shown in the video? I'd give what I did a shot. There are also a bunch of recalls on these ignition and immobilizer modules. Of course you can just tell them "You'll be getting a call from my lawyer!"
@@muckleyj I was getting immoblizer active message. Now I have immobolize defect!!! Remember they told.me they cant reprogram new or old one! I just got it towed to my garage and im lost! I called a lawyer and they arent even sure many lawyers who handles things like this. So basically they have me stuck I have to go thru them to get reprogrammed and have to get steering column which is dealer specific. MY CAR WORKED PERFECTLY FINE PRIOR TO ME TAKING IT TO THEM!
@@jermainehouston2014, small claims court. Your situation sucks. I'm sorry.
Hi josh i have 2009 model passat and its not getting start at after noon time and showing immobilizer active at the time, how can i fix this problem man. Itz been a while waiting to get help from anh one!please help me bro?!
Sorry bud, I got nothing... Does it happen at exactly 12 noon? Or is it just during the warmest part of the day? What time does it reset and allow you to start the car? That seems bizarre.
@@muckleyj yes during the warmest time and it also appear "steering colomn lock", both problem is connected?
@@sanjubaba3703 yeah I think the 2 problems are related. There are a few recalls related to the ignition module you might try the dealer first. The nice thing is that the push to start module is not a programmed component. It is a plug and play replacement so if you have a junk yard or donor car available you might be able to replace the module cheap. Of course checking the contacts and plugs on the module first is probably not a bad idea.
