Awesome rendition, great vocals, major chord happy song and beat,.All these guys could sing and harmonise and all exceptionally talented musicians, and the art of singing songs that suit their talents and vocal style.
No, this is the original song written by Jeff Christie and a big hit in 1970. Joe's song was just a French version of it released a couple of years later.
@bollockart .Jeff Christie, the writer of the song, offered it to the Tremeloes ,who turned it down,he then recorded it himself with his own group Christie.Christies original drummer was Mike Blakeley, brother of trem Alan Blakeley (playing organ in this clip)
The same music track is used on the Tremeloes version and the Christie version. They just laid a new vocal track with Jeff and kept the Tremeloe music for the Christie release.
@bollockart Jeff Christie wrote the song and gave it to the Tremeloes to record. However, halfway through recording, they decided to allow Jeff to sing the words. So the music on the record is played by the Tremeloes. Subsequently, Jeff Christie formed his own group and toured. It is his song.
Of course the backing on Christie's single was done by The Tremeloes! Both instrumental track AND backing vocals. The band "Christie" didn't even exist when this was recorded. Jeff Christie was the only member of the band "Christie" on the original single, singing lead. Mike Blakely (brother of the Tremeloes' Alan Blakely) was enlisted to join Christie on drums after the single was recorded. That guitar solo is unmistakenly Rick West(wood) of The Tremeloes, both here and on the Christie single.
Doesn't matter why I am glad that you did this. Have watched all the videos I can find of it and have had it in my head for 40 years. Hootch bar song. Thanks buddy you helped lighten the load. Still do too.
So long, boy, you can take my place Got my papers, I got my pay So, pack my bags, and I'll be on my way To Yellow River (Yellow River) Put my guns down, the war is won Fill my glass high, the war is won I'm goin' back to the place that I love Yellow River (Yellow River) Yellow River, Yellow River Is in mind, and in my eyes Yellow River, Yellow River Is in my blood, it's the place I love Got no time for explanations, got no time to lose Tommorow night, you'll find me sleepin' underneath the moon At Yellow River Cannon fire lingers in my mind I'm so glad I am still alive And I've been gone for such a long time From Yellow River (Yellow River) I remember the nights were cool I can still see the water blue And I remember the girl that I knew At Yellow River (Yellow River) Yellow River, Yellow River Is in mind, and in my eyes Yellow River, Yellow River Is in my blood, it's the place I love Got no time for explanations, got no time to lose Tommorow night, you'll find me sleepin' underneath the moon At Yellow River Yellow River, Yellow River Is in mind, and in my eyes Yellow River, Yellow River Is in my blood, it's the place I love
I like both versions. I too noticed they sang Yellow River twice. An Aussie group called Jigsaw has a nice version of this on UA-cam. And Christies version is on here as well. Love this song...
@LowBid86 Yes, it was not very usual. An other band with a singing drummer ( not sure that this band was famous in the USA) : Wallace Collection - Daydream (1969) on YT also.
No, I read it in Melody Maker somewhere in 1970 or so. Besides: I heard the trems version on the album "The Tremeloes In Cabaret", one of the greatest live albums by ANY 60's band.
Is this version playback of Christies version with live vocals? if you listen to the guitar and bass in this clip and compare it to Christies studio version it's identical. The vocals are defenitely by the Tremoles but listen to the instruments, I like both versions though, Both groups really made it sound good enough to make it a world hit :)
Interesting Vocals on this version. There is two others by Christie on you tube. One they are on a boat and the other one was done at the edge of the water. Looks like differnt drummers on those versions. I kinda like the slower one done on the boat. Check them out.
Just seen the Trems playing Pickering 60s fest (Rick and Dave + Jeff Brown and Joe Gillingham) ~ Brilliant evening and the stage was an artic trailer! Rick played the YR solo just like the record! Played all the hits apart from Hello World which is my favourite ~ but I guess they couldn't get all the hits in the time alloted. Silence is golden three part harmonies, just Rick on guitar ~ Fantastic!. Audience average age a bit higher than here ~ but a good mix
@bollockart Yes, Christie's classic 1970 version of "Yellow River" is the original hit. So why did The Tremeloes also record the song? Maybe the fact that the brother of The Tremeloes' Alan Blakely, Mike, was Christie's drummer had something to do with it!
Not all. Jeff Christie wrote the song for the Tremeloes. They declined to release it because they were trying to go in a different direction. Jeff Chrsties voice was then dubbed into the original recording and it was released and became a big hit. But everything on the hit that you hear apart from the lead vocal was the Tremeloes
I love the Tremeloes and this version is great, but I like the Christie version better and it was good that he got a chance to sing. It would have been interesting if they had all sung it together, with lead vocals given to Christie.
Jeff, thanks so much for posting this, as well as the story. Yellow river (Your version!) has always been one of my top 10 favorite songs of all time. Beautifully written and performed, and your voice is amazing. A work of art! Are you still touring?
Awesome rendition, great vocals, major chord happy song and beat,.All these guys could sing and harmonise and all exceptionally talented musicians, and the art of singing songs that suit their talents and vocal style.
Fantastic Dave
on drums and singing. Jeff, thanks for posting.
Dave Munden.. what a brilliant vocalist 😊
Best version ever
Yes, effectively is Yellow River on my mind and the beauty and happy memories of my childhood on this song..Thanks for the song. Saludos desde España.
luv Tremelos, story got a tear in my eyes
No, this is the original song written by Jeff Christie and a big hit in 1970. Joe's song was just a French version of it released a couple of years later.
Jeff, your song, your original release - the absolute best!
Yes, Jeff's voice, but it's the backing track of the Tremeloes version
Amazing how music brings back memories that no words or pics can
Really a great rock band, who left longing in all of us. A big hug from Brazil here!
Glad I decided to cruise UA-cam tonight. I haven't heard this song in forever. Great!
The Tremeloes did an amazing job with Yellow River, truly you cant say otherwise !!!
Seems they hurried thru it
They played the backing to Christie's hit.
Dave sings this the best. Tremeloes should be in Hall of.Fame
Terms rule imho. I was at this performance on Crackerjack in 1970 a school trip. Great version with excellent 12 string solo from Ricky Westwood
You learn something new everyday. Never realised the Trems did this cover. Great version.
It's not a cover. The Tremeloes did it first and he just used their backing.
Forever music.
The 'Christie' version is by the Tremeloes!! They recorded the backing tracks and Jeff Christie sang the vocals.
Nein.
Danke.❤❤❤❤
@bollockart .Jeff Christie, the writer of the song, offered it to the Tremeloes ,who turned it down,he then recorded it himself with his own group Christie.Christies original drummer was Mike Blakeley, brother of trem Alan Blakeley (playing organ in this clip)
wowowowowowow...... I never know the Tremeloe's did this song.......outstanding
The same music track is used on the Tremeloes version and the Christie version. They just laid a new vocal track with Jeff and kept the Tremeloe music for the Christie release.

Superschön Wow 👄 beautyful ♥ Love
The Christie hit WAS actually the Tremeloes playing on it anyway. The producer Mike Smith just substitued Jeff Christies vocals on the lead track.
Fantastic song !
Una canción eterna
LOVE YOU GUYS! FOREVER!!! J B SILVER

Tremeloes
These guys were so under rated. And this is a great traveling song down the PCH.
+austin teutsch yep

Doesn't matter why I am glad that you did this. Have watched all the videos I can find of it and have had it in my head for 40 years. Hootch bar song. Thanks buddy you helped lighten the load. Still do too.
even today unbeatable
Visit rhe Christie website and all will be revealed. Go to the youtube channel for the address.
had no idea the tremeloes had a shot at it--thanks for the info. glad christie did it--loved the production much better.
Muy bela cancion.
So long, boy, you can take my place
Got my papers, I got my pay
So, pack my bags, and I'll be on my way
To Yellow River (Yellow River)
Put my guns down, the war is won
Fill my glass high, the war is won
I'm goin' back to the place that I love
Yellow River (Yellow River)
Yellow River, Yellow River
Is in mind, and in my eyes
Yellow River, Yellow River
Is in my blood, it's the place I love
Got no time for explanations, got no time to lose
Tommorow night, you'll find me sleepin' underneath the moon
At Yellow River
Cannon fire lingers in my mind
I'm so glad I am still alive
And I've been gone for such a long time
From Yellow River (Yellow River)
I remember the nights were cool
I can still see the water blue
And I remember the girl that I knew
At Yellow River (Yellow River)
Yellow River, Yellow River
Is in mind, and in my eyes
Yellow River, Yellow River
Is in my blood, it's the place I love
Got no time for explanations, got no time to lose
Tommorow night, you'll find me sleepin' underneath the moon
At Yellow River
Yellow River, Yellow River
Is in mind, and in my eyes
Yellow River, Yellow River
Is in my blood, it's the place I love
@BEATLES4EVER57 No, this is not a reprise. The original song was a worldwide hit called Yellow River. Joe's version came a year after.
Show. ♫☺♥♫☺♥
I like both versions. I too noticed they sang Yellow River twice. An Aussie group called Jigsaw has a nice version of this on UA-cam. And Christies version is on here as well. Love this song...

The best performance of this song ever!
The Christie version is their vocals on a Tremeloes backing track
Jim
Excellent rendition of a cool song. 5 stars *****.
WOW! Great version (also), but get a load of that double neck Mosrite guitar! Great sound!
TEMPOS DE CANECÃO /RJ COM BIG BOY MUITA SAUDADE
@gary: Just go the Christie website. This is not new information. Dassin's was only a copy.
this song reminds me to my childhood
Sixties music is the best ever ,you understood what the songs were about fantastic ❤

Tremeleos
excelente
Amazing song
ESA CANCION ME RECUERDA CUANDO ESTRENE MI BAJAJ XCD 125 🔥🔥👊👊
This is great pop music ... and this song would probably sell very well in today's Hot New Country market!
Dave from the Tremelos ist great
THE BEST ****FANTASTIC***😎🤟
Original version, bravo !
good

Música linda fantástica !!❤
Great song! For some reason, I always thought The Tremeloes were Australian.
Még mindig jó!
@LowBid86 They all sang well.
tremoloes v chtistie=gibson v epiphone
By far the best version was the 'Jigsaw' s [Australian group] version at the time
@yowieray Ho really ! I didn't know that , i thought it was after Dassin ! Ok did you listening to the Joe's version ?
@thegilker Agreed that Rick is the ideal guitarist. Note the finger picking. LIndsay Buckingham does it well too.

1:46. Am I seeing this right? The drummer seems to be hitting an invisible tom above the snare. What technology back then. Wow!
I love this version equal to Christie. The Tremeloes were excellent group.
I totally agree !
Suvränt framträdande.....Kenneth..Sweden
I read that you used their backing track. I love both versions. Thank you
It's in my eyes and in my soul. Man.. i have to take a piss right now.
I hear this was really about the Civil War and a man being thankful to return to his home alive.
I don't even remember this song, but it is good.
yellow
river
Yes this music is magic
I love the Tremeloes and this version is great, but I like the Christie version better and it was good that he got a chance to sing. It would have been interesting if they had all sung it together, with lead vocals given to Christie.
I like this version more than Lou Christie's version. I really like the drummer's gravelly voice and he looks like he was having fun singing it.
They played the backing on the Christie's hit
Jeff Christie not Lou lol!
Jeff, thanks so much for posting this, as well as the story. Yellow river (Your version!) has always been one of my top 10 favorite songs of all time. Beautifully written and performed, and your voice is amazing. A work of art! Are you still touring?
@yowieray sounds like the song on LA Woman by the Doors.
Eva, your not the only one ;)
@pilgrim1362
great one is in china, but i think they sing the yellow river in their home town
Much prefer the original version and love the video with Paul Fenton (I think as the drummer) his facial expressions are brilliant
