You might want to try braided line as your main line and a flurocarbon leader. 20 lb braid has a diameter similar to 8lb mono. Some are designed to sink as well. Great video by the way.

Yes, but I don't have very good luck from the kayak. I've had better luck from the steps with multiple generators on
