#21 Heiko Roelfsema, aboard the torpedoed Junyo Maru

Teacher Heiko Roelfsema looks forward to his retirement back in the Netherlands. But the war there forces him to stay in the former Dutch-Indies. When war breaks out here as well, he signs up as a city guard in Djokjakarta. In 1942 Heiko is taken prisoner of war by the Japanese occupier and has to work on the Pakanbaroe Railway in Sumatra. To get there he is put on a packed Japanese cargo ship, the Junyo Maru. When the ship reaches Sumatra it is hit bij torpedoes and sinks in no time. The many passengers have no chance of leaving the ship in time.
