It's another classic Japanese version vs. US version showdown with Bad Dudes Vs. Dragon Ninja! In truth the two aren't THAT different in ways that truly matter, but Data East did make some interesting changes specifically geared at the American market!

I remember encountering machines that obviously had the Japanese board in them back in the day, and multiple times too! I would always be amused by the victory "UHHHHH!!" at the end of levels
Oh! So you ran into Japanese boards in not Japanese arcades? Interesting! The first time I ever ran into it was on an actual Japanese board!
@@BClarkOMPI was reminded of this when watching your footage of the Japan version. In the late 80s I was a teen in Ontario, Canada and it was there where I remember playing it. And in different towns and cities too! The cabinet looked the same as any other Bad Dudes cabinet, I wouldn't realize it till I started the game and saw Japanese text on the "mission briefing" screen! Maybe Data East thew japanese boards in with some conversion kits to keep up with demand?
@@ralang999 That could certainly be one explanation for it, since there was a lot more Western demand! Either that or you had some Japanese shop owners or something? It's interesting to hear though, regardless!

It could be! But boy it sounds like "Die!" to me 😁 But the more I think about it, the more I can hear "Got it"
The changes they made for the Western game were mostly pretty cool for a change. Absolutely no idea why they changed the scoring though. Everything in the Western game is worth 4x what it was worth in the Jp game, so if you can 1cc it, you automatically max the score out & there's no reason to go back & play better. Stupid but fun, the Data East motto (probably)
Ahh, I actually didn't pick up on the scoring since I'm not necessarily drawn to that in beat 'em ups, but I'm glad you pointed this out!
God, "Stupid but fun" really IS the Data East motto (I'm looking at you, Trio the Punch)
This is another nice breakdown/review of Bad Dudes. The game is fun, but as you say, is one of those titles that fits snuggly in the middle of not being bad but also not good. It has it's issues that you brought up and fairly pointed out that makes the game a little frustrating to play. But also, this game, despite its flaws, is certainly a fun one to play every now and then. Especially with a friend and it's always amusing to see that final victory screen of President Ronnie celebrating by getting burgers.
Absolutely this! It's kind of strange though...despite its mediocrity, making this video did actually make me want to learn the 1CC for it (I wasn't HORRIBLY far off even in just playing for the video) It might be very middle of the road but it's fairly breezy, and I feel like it doesn't throw anything at you that's TOO crazy!

Been getting into this one in recent years and I did pick up the johnny turbo version on sale. Definitely a guilty pleasure game for me, haha. Didn't know about the differences in the Japanese version though! Gonna have to look that up in mame!
It absolutely doesn't really make that much of a difference in terms of actual play, the differences are more than anything just kind of fun!
Being treated with a burger for the rescuing of the president is in line with Demolition Man's future where Stallone's character is treating to the extravagant dining of Taco Bell.
Never played the game, but definitely looks rather...............................meh. It honestly gives me a similar vibe as Rygar. Like it's not awful, but enough jank to make it either endearing or infuriating. Data East really tried to get Karnov everywhere, didn't they? :p
Big fan of the regular ninja variety. You know what you're getting with those regular ninjas.
That Apple II version is dreadful looking. My eyes, my poor eyes.
I think when something is labeled repetitive, I think that's simply due to the gameplay loop being too bland/not fun.

I don't know why, but for some reason I'm a bit surprised that you haven't played at least the NES version of this! And yes, in the end it may have just been a vehicle for Karnov! 🤣
In the end, I think it was all just an excuse for me to talk about Kusa Mochi Karnov, which I think is just hilarious.
@@BClarkOMP Simple reason, never owned it nor did anyone I know have that game. It was ignored. I only heard about it when I got older from the memes before they were referred to as memes.
