I have never heard the Maltese language before. It is certainly a very expressive language and delightful to listen to! The historical connection with Britain is clear from the way in which they switch seamlessly from Maltese into English whenever that might make things clearer.
@@Mark3ABE More accurately, it is a semitic language with English, Italian, French french influences due to its colonial past. There are plenty of liniguistics channels on yt that delve into Maltese etymology further, if it interests you :)
Priests used to be allowed to marry but the church didn't like sharing the wealth with another family after the priest's death. It is believed that 30% of priests are in a permanent relationship and only 50% manage to remain celibate.
Thank you Your Grace for your honesty and humanity. You give many sceptical Catholics hope for the future. If you weren't Archbishop, Malta would be fortunate to have you as its President. Happy New Year.
It is great that this is in Maltese. It helps cover the reality that they Bishop completely lacks the capacity to reason. Partially explains why he is a Bishop.
While I cannot understand Maltese, the short answer to this question about priests marrying, well, already people are complaining about how wealthy the Church is and not many priests are attracted to the priesthood because of the state of chastity needed to be one. Remember no one is using coercion to do Christ's work, a man responds to the call and must be at Christ's service to serve the people of goodwill of God. Secondly, the faithful will then not only donate to the church for all her needs, including those donations made to the many charitable works we are asked to give willingly to, but just imagine the faithful now, having to add more to the plate that gets passed around or nowadays, giving electronically, to support a wife, children, a car, a home and all the other expenses that the married are called to deal with on a daily basis. I say, no thank you, let's keep it just for a single male, who is at the service of the community, and should he cite loneliness, well the faithful should step forward and invite him over to parishioners' homes from time to time, to understand and draw on the love of Christ's followers. I think this is the Evil one throwing a red herring into the works to bring about disunity. I wonder what Mary would say? Or Pope St. John Paul II who's ministry was defined by his motto: Tutus Tuus! I am all yours. If we have married priests they will NOT be tutus tuus, but be dividing their time with even more headaches! Forget it! I will not be supporting married priests. It is a heresy of the biggest kind that the Evil One is planting in the hearts of the consecrated men and possibly some nuns too. Let us listen to the pope who is Christ's vicar on earth and not to the nonsense being bandied around in these end times...
Married priests have always existed in the Catholic Church. The Oriental rites he's referring to are part of the Catholic Church too. The Latin rite, found in most of the Western world, does not generally have married priests.
@@alexanderharding2221 There are now several hundred married Priests in the Latin Rite - they came in from the Anglican Church. The Latin Rite teaches that celibacy for the secular clergy is desirable. If does not teach that it is essential. Only the regular clergy take a vow of celibacy. The secular clergy take no vow of celibacy. They agree, voluntarily, to remain unmarried if their Bishop requires it. Bishops in the Eastern Rite Catholic Churches (in full communion with Rome) do not require the secular clergy to remain unmarried. They may marry if they feel called by the Lord to the married state.
@@Mark3ABE I'm a convert from Anglicanism myself so I was aware of those married priests, but I was sort of counting them separately. Does 'secular clergy' refer to priests who don't belong to a religious order? And it's only the bishop's instruction that prevents them from getting married?
@@alexanderharding2221 Yes, that is correct. Those who are members of a Religious Order and who are ordained Priests are referred to as the “regular clergy” and Priests who are not members of a Religious Order are referred to as the “secular clergy”. Priests who have been ordained having come into the Church from the Anglican Church are not in any way “inferior” to any other Catholic Priest. It is not a dogmatic requirement of the Catholic Church that the secular clergy remain unmarried. Priests in the Eastern Rite Catholic Churches, which are in full union with Rome, permit the secular clergy to marry and, of course, the Western Catholic Church permitted the secular clergy to marry for the first thousand years of its history. St. Peter and the majority of the Apostles were married, of course. Our Lord could easily have chosen only single men to be his Apostles, if that had been his wish. He chose married men, so must not have seen any objection to a married man being a Bishop or a Priest.
I would ask how he is defending gay couples and calling it love when Jesus himself told us against it. Also , even the bible says that a preist can marry , actually should marry because God told us to multiplicate. They not marry is completely against the word of God and when you go against the word of God terrible things happen. They end up raping children and having sex between them. No dear Archbishop, priests should be celibate. If singles are asked to be celibate, why should priests be allowed to marry? How can a married priest consecrate the host with his carnal married hands?
There are now several hundred married Priests in the Latin Rite (they came in from the Anglican Church). St Peter was married, as were several of the other Apostles. Was St Peter unable to consecrate the Eucharist?
This is good. So that priests had sexual outlet than be tempted in sexual abuse. Being married is not hindrance to God's service. But sexual abuse is definitely opposite of serving God and humanity.
Well, actually single people are able to “cohabit” if they are not in a sexual relationship with each other. Suppose that a wife who has lost her husband, having children to support, meets a man who has lost is wife, who also has children to support. They cannot manage financially on their own. They agree to rent a house together, as a family home for themselves and their children. They have separate bedrooms and the arrangement is not a sexual one. Well, of course that is permissible. They may live together as one happy family. It is no different to a wife who has lost her husband inviting her single brother to come and live with them so that they can share the expense of renting somewhere suitable to live.
