The Athletic’s Football Analytics Writer, Tom Worville is still trapped inside a scattergram. He is joined by Tifo’s JJ Bull to discuss the most productive players in Europe’s top five leagues.

I'd like to point out that in the top right corner we got Malinovskyi, Ilicic and Muriel, three Atalanta players. That shows how good that team is on the offensive end
muriel was also featured on the corner of most effective scorer if I am not wrong. Atalanta has one of the scariest attack in history.

Rather than assists per 90 I'd use xA. Assists aren't down to the player and the receiver have to finish those chances. xA would give us a better idea. So this chart is a bit flawed since it's influenced by something like your teammates finishing/not finishing the chances. xA isn't affected by that.
Yup, you can see it with mount for example. Creates lots of chances but if your team mates can't finish shit your assists won't be high
The graph shows assist vs chances. By counting how many chances one creates, and how many is converted into assists has already indicated that. High amount of chances and low amount of assist means that the finisher is unable to convert (I think they explained what happened already by telling us who the finisher is, so we can get a hang on whether the finisher or the assister is the problem). If they want to be more precise, I think 3d graph with the 3rd axis being xA would be better for data interpretation. However it is maybe too complicated to be understood by viewers or maybe takes too long to edit them.
@@radennanda7502 The flaws must be reduced as much as possible. We already know assists aren't dependable. And they also explained how chances created is also flawed. So using two flawed metric together isn't the best idea for this purpose. Sure xA has faults but it's the best available option. And that would give us a better idea. It also serves the same purpose for this video while giving us a better idea.
@@Castiel_01x I think you're misunderstanding what they are trying to present. They already acknowledge in the video how assists are affected by the finisher. Assists shows passes that actually led to a goal, whether they are deemed "quality" by xA or not.
@@makskauzny3794 Exactly what I was thinking of when I was watching the vid. Mount has really high stats for things like chance creation, key passes, passes into final third etc. but due to the lack of finishing, and the amount of missed sitters from Chelsea forwards, it left him with a lot less assist than he should have had from his play.
Hopefully with Lukaku this season he proves these stats right
Müller is absolutely outstanding. The standard concept of bayern to this day is "Müller plays every game" - this graph makes sense of that.
He also does not take many set pieces or corners. So all the chances are from play.
The Pogba assist show's the utility of expected threat.

Surprising to see no Bruno or Messi in this graph. Maybe their per 90 stats aren't as good cause they played almost all the games last season?
Plus the chances created are not always finished off in the net.

Even more interesting as Bruno is Numero Uno in the Prem for Goals and Assists, Assists, passes into the final 1/3 and expected assists in the Prem since he joined

Chances created per 90 involves set pieces too. Which is why many players in there are set piece takers. Should have done one with Chances created excluding set pieces.
On the other hand if your most creative players can deliver at set pieces then why not include them. Depends what you want to prove i guess

Exactly, numbers can be inflated by the team winning a lot of fouls which they don't mention at all.

@@Ads-vf4wl add to that say a player X dribbles past 3-4 players into the final third then lays to off to another player Y who then squares it for player Z to score. In the chances created chart, it comes up as chance created by player Y for player Z.
Am I the only one wondering how there's talks about Assists without a single mention of Messi and Bruno? They aren't even pointed out on the chart which makes no sense. Wth TIFO??

maybe that's because of his /90 stats, he played a shit load of games last season and that resulting to him not being able to stand up in the graphs
Worth noting is that Atalanta have Muriel, Malinovski and Ilicic which all are in the top right corner. Still an underrated side and amazing to watch!
I think key passes should also be considered, sometimes it isn't the last pass which makes the difference but the pass made before that breaks the defense.
I love that Muriel’s quality was inflated by spectacular viral goals early in his career, and is now being inflated by the opposite medium in terms of spectacular statistics. A pleasing symmetry in the lack of context.

Two of them are CFs, Messi traditionally isn't, but that's where he predominantly played last season under Koeman.
Not sure about Bruno, it could probably be since be played more as a second striker of sorts. Like Martinez or Jesus.

I think to normalize the scatter gram you could multiply the per 90 stat with total number of assists * league coefficient (premier league vs Hungarian league).
A little bit of clustering (tier system + Baselines) and showing the team formation would be a nice touch.

If Chelsea had just had average finishing last year Mason Mount would have far more assists. He was excellent at chance creation last year.
He only underperformed his xA by 0.85. that means he was pretty on the money with it.

I think they clarified somewhere that him and Bruno, as well as being outside of the bounds of the scattergram, were disqualified for playing basically every game last season. Also, Messi, like Kane, played primarily as a CF, yet they still put up really good numbers.

High chances created but low assists do NOT = low-quality chances. It could also mean that the strikers/finishers are shit. For Example, Mount is on there with low assists but literally passes to Timo Werner...

To me, the scattergram is like the maze in the film 'Mazerunner'. Tom's been sent up there by himself. Just when Tom starts to get a feeling for how to navigate 'The Best Forward' scattergram, JJ Bull changes it to the 'Most Creative PLayer in Europe' scattergram, with different parts of the scattergram opening or closing each week. In a couple of weeks, Tom will be joined by a woman he doesn't know. And before Christmas, JJ will release a griever into the scattergram for a laugh.

I thought chances created was for half/clear cut chances, not just shots. I thought a pass that leads to a shot is a key pass, while a pass that leads to a scoring chance is a chance created (and key pass). At least, that's what Football Manager thinks.

I really feel... how useful is this scattergram? The video is basically a justification of outlier or pointing out things that we aren't sure of. Sure. But this really tells us nothing we don't already can tell by existing metric; high usage (Grealish), players on dominant teams (KDB, Di Maria, Muller) or players on aggressive teams (Atalanta, Frankfurt) is going to score highly on this plot. Also chance creation highly benefits players who pay with a dominant striker such as Haaland, Lewa and Silva. As xG have taught us anything, there is really no such thing as a clinical striker (in general), but rather strikers who gets a lot of shots; thus these guys will ramp up the chance creation numbers. And then this stat is skewed by set pieces. And explanation of the omission of guys like Kane, Bruno, any Barcelona or Atletico or Juventus players will also be nice.
I just don't know what this graph is supposed to tell me.
It would be nice to split this graph into leagues and narional teams... I believe there are probably players who could be better located in the chart, but dont jace Lewandowski as a finisher (like Kimmich does)...

I don't see how that Pogba pass to Lingard against Everton can be counted as a chance/assist created when Lingard did all the work required for that goal. I doubt Pogba passed it with the knowledge that it was going to lead immediately to a shot on target. I've watched the clip a few times and I just don't see it.

Point we are missing is style of play attacking/ counterattacking. Easier to create in a counterattacking side due to lot of space.
