Yeah, I read all these passive aggressive comments telling me to "shit or get off the pot" or questioning my honesty as to if I'd actually resume. Well, it's officially on the schedule. I head back to Toll the Hounds in August. Thanks to those who were patient!
I took a little break after Reapers Gale & switched genre’s, it was nice. Jumped into some sci fi & horror. When I came back to Toll of the Hounds I felt like I missed it. You can doooo it!
Hey, I may be with u, or probly ahead. I do appreciate your videos/thoughts along the way even tho you may have recorded these vids a couple years ago. Thanks for them. I've enjoyed watching them as I make my way thru malazan
Hi Mike, I found your channel just as I was finishing up Reaper's Gale. I'm super excited you're carrying on cause I've been part of the Star Wars readalong in your discord but after reading 32 of those this year I could use a break 😅 are you planning on reading the whole thing in August?
I just finished Toll The Hounds about 10 minutes ago, and came here for my normal end-of-read viewing. Soooo bummed I didn’t realize you had paused your reading. Loved following along with you so far, but I guess I gotta finish the last two without you haha
I’m still chugging along. Started Toll the Hounds a little early because I had an opening in my audiobook schedule and finished last week. Us newbies are still with you, Mike!
I’m vibing with this Mike who’s reading for fun instead of work. When you’re happy you’re videos reflect and we’re happy that you’re happy. Keep up the good work and we all look forward to see what’s coming up!
I think I'm still going to follow the schedule. I'm really glad your read-along got me into this series and I'm looking forward to seeing how it ends in June.
I am a silent reader, still on track currently book 2 of Toll the Hounds. Thanks for keeping the discord channels open as I do check in on occasion. I am enjoying TtH even though pace is slower now, probably because I am familiar with most of the characters so far and I am enjoying the reunions and seeing more depth in many of the characters, and some mysteries being revealed. I definitely feels as something big is coming soon.
Malazan is a lot to take in, particularly when reading other series at the same time. Some of the books definitely drag, but it is worth the slog in the end when you get back to it.
This is why I can't read a series straight through or on any sort of timetable. It's also why I can't participate in read alongs. Nothing puts me in a reading slump faster. Take your time and get the enjoyment out of it that it deserves!
I just finished Toll the Hounds and it is my favorite book in the series so far. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did when you finally feel inspired to pick it up. Thank you for introducing me to this series. I never would have attempted it without your encouragement.
I can understand. After Reaper's Gale, I needed to breathe for awhile and recharge. I started Return of the Crimson Guard by ICE but that was far enough removed from Malazan, although I think ICE's writing is more digestible than Erikson's. I haven't even tried to start Toll the Hounds. I decided I wanted read the Green Bone Saga instead, back-to-back, and see where I am after that.
I did this exact same thing. I just finished RoTCG last night and was really pleased with it but I won't be starting Toll The Hounds until next month or even the month after so I can read Caliban's War and some other books off my TBR. This is my first "re-read" of Malazan after finishing the series 10 years ago and I've been pacing myself with the books because despite loving them, they are fatiguing some times. (Especially when the current world stage is....*waves hands at everything*)
I was somewhat active on the Discord server early on, but I ended up falling further and further behind since I only get about a half-hour of reading time per day, and these books can be quite long. 😉 I'm actually only a few hours into The Bonehunters at the moment, so I've still got a ways to go. I ended up leaving the discord server entirely because all of the older channels for the books I was on kept getting deleted before I could even get far enough in to participate in them. That being said, I've been enjoying watching your videos as I complete each book, and who knows - maybe by the time I get to Toll the Hounds, you'll have picked it back up! 😊 Either way, thank you for the contributions you've already made to the Malaztube community!
Jimmy nuts has awesome Malazan discussions for each book if you want deep dives. I also highly recommend checking out the Ten very big books podcast. It’s a Malazan read along podcast that breaks it down by a couple of chapters at a time. They aren’t too far ahead of you.
The mind and body are wise. Give them what they need. I had to take a break after Wizard and Glass, but a couple of days ago I started Wolves of the Calla and I´m enjoying it quite a bit. Breathers are lifesavers, dont forget that.
Started out like Coltaine, ended up like Leoman. Shit happens. Thank You for taking me on that journey, I would not have started this series without Your iniciative!
I'm actually excited for this because my hope is that it opens you up to reading, reviewing, and letting us know about other books. I started off on this read-along, got to the middle of the third book before I realized that I just didn't enjoy reading it, so I dropped off.
You have NO idea how relieved I feel to hear you say this! I've been a slower reader of this series the entire time, and a silent lurker in the discord channels because I'm usually so behind everyone else. I was going to start Reaper's Gale fresh in January... got 100 pages in and decided I needed a break. I was just going to read Ruin, then go back to it. But then I finished Ruin and just had to immediately finish Wrath! Reaper's Gale would be there for me then. But then I finished Wrath and decided I wanted something a bit more light hearted - so I read Heir of Novron. I was going to read Reaper's Gale finally - just until Justice of Kings came in... but I read about 10 pages and just couldn't do it. So I've picked up The Blade Itself while I wait for my pre-order. I absolutely want to finish Malazan - I've loved 5 of the 6 I've read! and 4 of those five were in my top 5 books last year. But I need a break too. I know you're still a book ahead of me, but I feel less guilty knowing I'm not the only one! We will rejoin the war band soon!
I been loving more and more every book, I'm a first reader, but I completely understand, Malazan is one of the most demanding book series I ever read, they need a certain time and space to be fully understand and enjoy.
I'm one of the silent first time readers who is still in the game. I struggled to finish the previous book, taking nearly the whole two months and it seemed a slog but I'm finding Toll the Hounds much more engaging. Totally understand your position though; reading should be a pleasure in life not a chore and taking a break is the right thing to do if it is becoming one. I'll be there, lurking in the background and reading along when you feel the urge to dive back in!
Great decision man. There’s a difference between pushing through and simply just not enjoying it. Fresh eyes always build the world a little better after you “see what else is out there”. Cheers!
Super glad for you Mike. The last few months have been filled with changes that I think will reignite your passion for reading. And I think it will really come through in all of your content creation.
do what feels right for you mike I will be here ready to watch your Malazan discussions when you feel up to finishing the series and also anything else you upload lol love the channel man. peace
I started this read along but was an early drop off. I was burnt out from life at the time and just needed to read easy stuff. I started again in December and am on book four. Maybe I’ll catch up! You do what is best for you!!
Know thyself. It is good that you know yourself well enough to be able to make this (right) decision. All the best Mike, looking forward to other projects from you.
Best thing being, read it through a second time, and you'll have a whole new experience. I tend to read 2-3 books at the same time. Took me just over a year to read the entire, initial, 10 books. Then I read the series by Ian C. Esselmont, then the Bauchelain and Korbal Broach set, then I reread the Book of The Fallen.
I think this is such a respectful and mature decision. It shows that you care about the world and the work to give it the time and energy. To me that is admirable …
I'm totally with you. Hey, you read books for fun. Don't let it feel like Required Reading to complete a literature course. Yesterday I watched your "state of the channel" video, and I feel like ypu have been putting too much pressure on yourself. My recommendation would be to do some moodreading. Just pick up any book on a whim. If it doesn't work, pick up another one. Mainly what I'm suggesting is that enjoy reading and talking with your audience, without any pressure whatsoever.
I believe this is the first time I’ve commented on one of your videos, though I’ve followed your channel for some time. I’m a huge Malazan fan and when you first started the series, I was thrilled to follow along with your reviews. If burnout is causing you to have a negative experience with the series, it’s absolutely the right thing to take some time away. I’ll be looking forward to hearing what you have to say on the last three books when you decide it’s time to return to them.
Malazan is a very difficult reading journey but one that rewards at the end. It took me 18 months to complete the first time. I agree that a break is worth it, especially if you're not enjoying or disconnected from the characters. Good luck.
I'm glad to hear that you're continuing. I read the first and plan to eventually get back to it. I might need to read the first again as I didn't understand it well.
Hey Mike! Just found your channel a few months ago and have also been reading Malazan for the first time. Just started the Bonehunters, really enjoying it so far! I've also enjoyed your videos of the series. Yours are the first videos I watch after finishing either the first half or the whole book! You do you of course, but I am definitely looking forward to more videos when you eventually return!
All good Mike, no worries. Both the reading and talking about books should be enjoyable, and doing it in your own pace is part of that. I hope a break will let you dive back in rejuvenated and ready to enjoy ever more. 😄
I’m just starting book 3 and I’m having a hard time with this series so far. I absolutely loved book 1 but book 2 was an absolute slog. It took me 3 years to get through it. Knowing book 3 continues the story from book 1, I’m excited to jump back in but I’ve never had a book stop me in my tracks before like that.
Nothing but respect for this decision. The name of the game is enjoyment it’s a hobby not a chore. Pacing is everything and being able to dedicate the necessary time to fully understand and appreciate a story as complex as Malazan is a big investment and you don’t want to do it our yourself a disservice by forcing things.
I understand your sentiment. Although I didn’t join the warband I started around the same time, and I recently finished book 4. I applaud ur pace man. I enjoy the series while I am reading, but it drains my energy. The epic-ness/depth/world building and structure is mind boggling. So enjoy your time with the world of Malazan and don’t force it. The goal is enjoyment. Keep at it, man, at your own pace.
I totally know where you are coming from Mike. I started wheel of time in 2020 and I myself took a break after book 5. That's why I'm sticking to mostly trilogies this year before I start Malazan.
Iv'e been a first time reader following you since last January, Mike and I felt the exact same way when I started Reaper's Gale a couple months ago. Just had to take a step back. I have enjoyed the majority of these books but the writing style is exhausting to me after reading the first six last year. Reading Sun Eater right now and am enjoying the hell out of it. I'll be on the look out when you start up with Malazan again, maybe I will be inspired to finish it when that day comes as well. Love your channel, cheers!
Of course we get it! Let yourself take a break and recharge. And it opens you up to pick up other books and smaller series. Just got to look at the positive
Mate totally get it, been a silent follower of the read along and was burning out. I decided to get a free trial of audible and have tackled the last two books in that format. Zero regrets, I listen on the commute to work and on long runs and loved the ending because of it. In the meantime I've read the Red Rising Trilogy and now a third of the way through Empire of the Vampire in the time it would've taken me to read Dust of Dreams...
Sounds good to me. I fell off with the revised schedule and took the chance to take a couple of longer breaks, this year I missed the world as you say and enjoyed books 6 (Jan) and 7 (Feb). Hopefully that happens for you. For what it's worth I'm glad the readalong blew up so huge initially at least as it's how I found the channel (and booktube), and you made a daunting series that I'd previously DNF'd seem achievable.
Thanks for the update! Good call on choosing not to burn your bridges on your journey through the world of Malazan! SideNote: I feel like Ian C. Esslemont's Path to Ascendancy series is such a bad ass gift you get to partake in after completing the main Malazan books. Anyone else feel that way?
I’m on Book 3…. I’m loving it and eating up this series so far and love your Malazan videos, they help me so much after finishing a book and I love to hear other people’s opinions on the series.
Still part of the warband, Mike! Currently only on chapter 4 though as I'm also reading Haunting of Hill House and The Blade Itself. I am active on the Discord channel, but only talk when I have finished a chapter section within the readalong because I have been spoiled before, so I'm just being careful. Also not really checking out the Noobs Only channel for that reason, so I think we keep missing each other because often you are way ahead of me. I'm still going to try to finish Malazan according to the schedule! Would be nice to have some sort of poll at the end, because I'm really curious who has stayed with you until the end. Just know that we completely support you, reading is supposed to be fun. I like the books, but because they are so huge and dense they always put me in a reading slump at the end so I sometimes felt obligated to start the next book while I wasn't in the mood yet. Take your time and let's finish this readalong strong!
I kind of fell off when you changed the schedule, I just could not keep up. I'm still reading it and I would really recommend taking a break in between. I have found that I have to be in the mood for Malazan to enjoy it to the fullest.
100% with you Mike. First time I read TtH I found my mind wandering and having to reread sections multiple times. I honestly felt out of my depth and like it was an English class homework assignment I was going to fail. After my first reread I appreciated it much more and really enjoyed it during the third time through. I know that doesn’t help you now, but there is a bright light at the end of the Malazan tunnel once you finally get through it. Cheers!
Good for you Mike! You look so pained and great to see you're taking a break from reading Malazan. I can't hate read because I end up dnf'ing and never coming back to that book or series. For me, when I'm reading a book or series that I'm becoming tired of, I'll either dnf or just take a break. Reading slumps come on fast and I just got out of a year long reading slump a few months ago. Breaks are good, enjoy it! Dive into those other books behind you AND there are great new releases in 2022!!! I'm loving Mickey7 and The Justice of Kings just arrived in the mail...hint, hint.
Silent Malazan & Memory, Sorrow, & Thorn reader here! I totally understand the frustration with Malazan. I loved Gardens of the Moon & Deadhouse Gates but hate read Memories of Ice. So I take months long breaks now between Malazan books. I finished House of Chains in November and just barely started Midnight Tides. With Midnight Tides I’m doing the same thing I did with Stone of Farewell which is 1 chapter per day and I find it’s helping out a lot! Cheers Mike!
I haven't read Malazan and don't plan to any time soon, but it's been fun watching your journey with the series so far. I know you've been struggling with it, so I couldn't help but laugh at the title and thumbnail. Haha. I'm just impressed you lasted this long before needing an extended break. Right now I'm currently in a reading mood where anything over 400 pages makes me irritated. 😅
I hear ya, Mike. I have a love/hate relationship with Malazan, and often go back and forth between "this is one of the best things I've ever read" to "why am I even reading this." I had to take a break after HoC, but plan on tackling at least Midnight Tides and The Bonehunters this year. But I definitely slowed down too!
Fair enough Mike! It’s reading, it should be fun, right?! I’m in the middle of a three year reread, I set a moderate pace from the get go and it’s been great, just enough time between books that I’m excited to get to the next one! I think any long series, you need to be realistic about the pace, Dresden Files, Culture, Stephen Kings books… small bites, well chewed, so it’s enjoyed! Happy reading!
I'm also a silent reader. I checkout discord every few days but rarely post. I completely understand wanting to step away from the series for a while. I kind of did the same thing. I read all of Toll of the Hounds in January. That allowed me to take a break from the series for a 4-5 weeks and read something a little lighter. I have really enjoyed the read along thus far. It helped get me into reading this series. I expect that it would have taken years for me to read this series otherwise.
I´m a few months late to this video but anyways I totally understand mike! Take all the time that you need/want, keep the reading fun. I´m one of those silent readers, I never could read on schedule. Sometimes I finished way faster, other times I took several months of breaks. I always enjoy your perspective/take on books, so I´ll still look forward to those but on your own time.
I'm all for it 🙌 This decision does yourself and your audience a world of good. Like giving a chance for those who fell behind to maybe catch up and re-enlist with the warband. I never was a series binger... be it shows or books. And Malazan just needs to be spaced out...
All those in the read along lost on Aren way. Or the snake in the glass desert. I’m surprised there’s so few new readers. I started the series after the memories of ice spoiler talk and haven’t been able to put it down. Half way through the crippled god now I love it so much.
I just finished TTH and as much as I’d love to hear you talk about the epic ending I’m glad you’re taking a break if you’re not feeling it right now. Take your time.
Well, not every series manages to be like the Dresden Files. Malazan is full of chunky books with a overloading amount of information, it's completely understandable that someone would want to take a breather.
As a first time reader about to begin roll the hounds , these books can be tiring to get through. I want to say that I have appreciated the videos on each book and that they’ve provided enjoyment for my journey. I’m late to the party but thank you for the content
Hey Mike! Only reason I picked up Malazan is because you started this read-along. But oh man, do I feel you on needing a break. I finished Toll the Hounds a month ago and needed a break just like you. Malazan should be my favorite fantasy series by the time its done, and I never would have picked it up without you starting this read-along so thank you for that. I am going to enjoy my break from Malazan and hope you do too! I look forward to picking of Dust of Dreams when you get to it. Maybe I'll have to start posting in the Discord read-along too to enhance the reading.
I'm still chugging along. I had to slow way down. My father recently passed away and life just got a lot harder. I completely understand that you have to enjoy what you read. And I enjoy your channel regardless of what you read. I am one of the silent people on discord...
Malazan is one of those series were getting to the end is an impressive feat. So many breaks most people need to take along the way after reading several and most drop out before then.
I agree with your thoughts. I began this series based upon your suggestion. I do not join reading groups, so I did not intend on joining your group effort. And I found vols 8, and 9 (as I understand it, part one, concluding with 10) a true slog. I have real problems with the content of 8 and 9. However, for some reason, The Crippled God has held my interest. But it took three months before I could start it after 9. So, thanks for the frankness.
Man I started reading this series when your read along first kicked off and I still haven’t finished book 3 😂 I haven’t taken any serious breaks from it or anything, it’s just that’s how long it’s taken this dense ass series to soak into my comprehension. No way this is something I could ever blaze through but I can say for certain that I’ve immensely enjoyed my time spent with it and really looking forward to (eventually) completing it! Your decision is more than understandable my guy, much respect 🙏
I lost the pacing of the read-along soon after the updated schedule. Decided to do just one book every three months because one book takes me at least a month (non-native language). Still glad that you started the read along and I'll continue and watch your content when I arrive at the specific points in the books. Those videos are helping me to enjoy the series a lot! So even though I've lost sight of the warband, I'm still hanging on somewhere at the end of the line ;)
I started my Malazan campaign on 01/01/2022, currently on chapter 12 of Deadhouse Gates. Absolutely loving the journey so far. I have wanted to read an epic fantasy that is actually "epic" in scale for a couple of years now and Malazan has scratched that itch magnificently. So I am sort of selfishly glad that you are taking a break Mike. Gives me time to catch up, haha.
I read the first 3 malazan books in 2019 and while I loved them, they're so big and so dense that I took a break and still haven't got back to them! I think one of the problems is knowing there are still 7 1000+ page books ahead of me is pretty intimidating. I had been planning to join up with the readalong on book 4 but after the schedule got sped up to one every two months I knew there was no way I'd be able to keep up. But as you say I am going to finish Malazan...eventually!
Oh thank goodness! I've got two ARCs that I'm helping with and haven't been able to give Toll the Hounds the attention it deserves, so this buys my some time! First time reader, stupidly tackling the full universe (Erikson and Esslemont combined) in order, plus still doing the Crichton read-along, so I completely understand how overwhelmed you must be feeling! Looking forward to continuing to hear your thoughts when you come back to Malazan! Hopefully by then I'll be a bit ahead, and can look back and remember!
The only Malazan books I’ve read consecutively were 9 & 10. I started the main series in 2018 and finished in 2021. I mixed reading Malazan with many other books and every time I returned to Malazan it felt fresh and satisfying. Obviously I don’t have a UA-cam channel but the slow and steady approach with this series is my advice. When you do pick it back up, I’m sure you’ll like it even more.
Totally understand I have slowed down. I have yet to start book 7. It’s that the series isn’t interesting, it’s that it is dense and a challenge. I will eventually finish it one book at a time. I figure I will enjoy it more this way.
I did the same thing. I took a 2-year break between Midnight Tides and The Bonehunters, and then took another 2-year break between Toll the Hounds and Dust of Dreams. If any series needs it, it's this one.
I took a break in the middle of House of Chains. I was going to read with you when you got there but I just didn’t feel it yet. I am going to finish the series! Eventually!
I read the whole series last year for the first time. It took me all year plus the first two weeks of this year. This is way too good to hate read. Take your time and enjoy!
I totally feel you man. For me, Malazan has been an iterative process. I first read GOTM and then stopped. Then I managed to read the first four to bé discouraged at the beginning of Midnight tides. After a two years break, I started over and read the main 10 big Books and all ICE's notME. Two month later, I decided to start my first complete reread with you for your read along. So.. iterative 😅
You gotta do what you gotta do mate. I def understand taking a break on something when your in a long series, espcially if you are not enjoying it right now. Better to step away and come back when the enthusiasm has returned.

Sounds good Mike. Hope you enjoy it. I’d love to try Malazan at some point, but it’s a daunting task. Haha
I just finished Toll The Hounds about 10 minutes ago, and came here for my normal end-of-read viewing. Soooo bummed I didn’t realize you had paused your reading.
Loved following along with you so far, but I guess I gotta finish the last two without you haha
BookTube is a hobby, so it’s supposed to be fun, right? Totally understandable, Mike, and my very best to you for recharging your Malazan batteries!
Dude it took me 5 years to read the whole series, take as much time as you need but keep us updated on it as you go through
Honor your process, Mike! Toll the Hounds is a dense book, and your decision is completely understandable. Much support!
I’m still chugging along. Started Toll the Hounds a little early because I had an opening in my audiobook schedule and finished last week. Us newbies are still with you, Mike!
As a big malazan fan, none of us want you to force yourself to read it if you feel like taking some time off from the series
Mike! I just finished The Bonehunters. Ready to catch up to you! I am hooked after book 6.
I’m vibing with this Mike who’s reading for fun instead of work. When you’re happy you’re videos reflect and we’re happy that you’re happy.
Keep up the good work and we all look forward to see what’s coming up!
I think I'm still going to follow the schedule. I'm really glad your read-along got me into this series and I'm looking forward to seeing how it ends in June.

i could neverrr join a read along, readathon, yes possible but when we're forcing ourself to read the same book when we don't want to?? nooooo XD
I began the series this week. Planning on doing at least the 3, then will probably assess from there. Looking forward to it.
I just finished Toll the Hounds and it is my favorite book in the series so far. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did when you finally feel inspired to pick it up. Thank you for introducing me to this series. I never would have attempted it without your encouragement.

Steven, I am right there with you. I am currently on Memories of Ice. Slow and steady! 😁
Me too 😏
The mind and body are wise. Give them what they need. I had to take a break after Wizard and Glass, but a couple of days ago I started Wolves of the Calla and I´m enjoying it quite a bit. Breathers are lifesavers, dont forget that.
Don’t blame you for taking a break after wizard and glass. Most of that book is slowwwwwwww.
Calla is the best one in the series.
Hey Mike, we are still waiting patiently! Love your reviews! Give Malazan another chance?
Embrace the hate, let it flow trough you and you’ll find the energy.
You have NO idea how relieved I feel to hear you say this! I've been a slower reader of this series the entire time, and a silent lurker in the discord channels because I'm usually so behind everyone else.
You do what works for you brother! Always support your channel 👍
Am actually glad about this. Am looking forward to seeing him focus more on sci-fi classics.
Yesss!! well done my friend. Glad to have you back in Malaz. :)
I hear you. I'm taking Toll the Hounds very slowly. I have too much going on right now to give it the focus it needs.
I took an 8 month break after TtH, and I ended up loving the series. Do what's best for you Mike, the books aren't going anywhere!
I would forget everything this way. Its already hard to follow everything . 😁
You’re fine Mike! We understand!
Same. I was struggling along with it. It started to feel like work. I think a little break will do us good.
Fair enough mate, good call.
Thanks for the update! Good call on choosing not to burn your bridges on your journey through the world of Malazan!
SideNote:
I feel like Ian C.
Thanks for the video, Mike!!
It would be unbecoming of us Malaz fans to not have, wait for it, compassion for your situation 😁
I kind of fell off when you changed the schedule, I just could not keep up. I'm still reading it and I would really recommend taking a break in between. I have found that I have to be in the mood for Malazan to enjoy it to the fullest.
Yeah I don't know how folks run through all 10 back to back.
I might actually catch up now! Great idea - had to slow down myself for the same reason. Looking forward to missing it and continuing along with you!
I always enjoy your perspective/take on books, so I´ll still look forward to those but on your own time.
im doing the same thing right now, I read first 3 books then I took a break and I´m reading another thing, good for you.
I'm all for it 🙌
This decision does yourself and your audience a world of good.
His Toll the Hounds review will come out the same say as Winds of Winter
Sounds like a plan!
I fully support your decision Mike! I know the feeling of just not enjoying reading something and needing to take a step back
I completely support your decision Mike. Sometimes we need a break from something we like/love to appreciate it fully.
Good for you! Malaz will always be there for you :)
No point reading something if you’re not in the mindset to properly enjoy it! Good work with everything you do
I lost the pacing of the read-along soon after the updated schedule.
If you're having fun, we're having fun!
Bro I totally respect that. It's not fun forcing a book down. Hey it gives me a chance to catch up!
Totally understand Mike.
Everyone needs a break sometimes! Keep up the great work!!!
Much respect
