Great commercials here, 501 Jeans, the Pioneer with the punks and conservatives facing off and coming together, and I swear, candy bars used to be much bigger back then. That Hershey's commercial was fun.
That was definitely the norm back then. Sometime in the early 2000s I switched to the new "cool" thin ones but before that they were always like that and we just sort of accepted that glasses were ugly.
@@Xezlec That's really intetesting. I've noticed in 60s tv, the glasses are medium sized and thick black rims. Then in the 70s they started getting HUGE. This trend continued til like the early 90s it seems like. Idk how people went around with Observatory telescope lens on their faces hahahaha
The ending v/o for the Chia Pet and Clapper commercials were done by the late Jack Reynolds and the Atlantic Gun and Tackle ad was v/o by veteran Cleveland TV and Radio Announcer, Ted Alexander.
I was born in late 1971. This was my coming of age commercials. It's amazing how different they are from today. How the hell did we function without the web? I hardly remember.
Wow..Charlie Perfume? The McDLT is one of the most famous Lost Foods today (great commercial). The Chia Pet! That is a blast from the past! The Pioneer one is of award-winning quality! The Clapper, another great blast from the past! That Levi's 501 Blues commerical was awesome! We used to have the Colgate pump! That Jontue one is gorgeous. We used to have that aquafresh pump also!
Today it's just get laid as much as possible. I guess it's cool people feel empowered to do that but it doesn't create a loving environment for longer relationships.
Max Mercury 86 at 2nd place and 89 at 3rd. 89 was good, but mostly sad 😭 for me because I was starting to take notice that styles and trends were changing.
What's funny is that I've talked to Dave about this before. 1984 was a turning point in commercials (and television) as you've said. Prior to 1984 things could have easily been mistaken for the late 1970s. You really began getting the 1980s flavor in 1984. A perfect example was the Revlon Charlie perfume commercial on this reel. You've sited some really good examples with 1986 and 1989.
Wish I could go and visit the 1980s. I would love to get some coke and listen to saxophone rock music. It would have been awesome to be a blue collar worker or something back then. Like working in a steel mill or something before they all went out of business
Ah, the McDLT, a good marketing concept while it lasted. And the Chevy Nova. Not very popular with the Spanish speaking community, because your car's name means "doesn't go".😁
Yes matter of fact Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA" and Prince's "Purple Rain" albums both released in 1984 were two of the first albums available on the new compact laser disc also known as CD's.
No no nope it was 1984 during the summer I remember it so well my first year of college. Everybody when finished with classes went to get the new McDLT BS. I hated McDonald's food back then and still do only thing I can handle from them are their chicken McNuggets and fries.
Gosh, I remember most of these commercials like yesterday. Youthful memories.
Was senior in high school in 1984. It was such a great fun time. I sure do miss those days.
I'm with you on that. Class of '84.
Wow....It's so nice to see what the world 🌎 looked like in 1984. Cause I was born '84. I look at it as Yearbook and the 80's were the best! 😊🙌💯
Love all the jingles.
That Pioneer commercial at 3:51 is INCREDIBLE. I want to see that movie.
This is one of those 80s commercials that everyone seems to have forgotten, but when they see it: "Oh, yes!!! I loved that commercial!" :)
Hmmmm.
Great commercials here, 501 Jeans, the Pioneer with the punks and conservatives facing off and coming together, and I swear, candy bars used to be much bigger back then. That Hershey's commercial was fun.
The beginning of the huge trend that was "wine coolers"!
McDLT was a good idea but as my dad said, "whose idea was it to keep the cheese cold too?"
@@suprchickn7745
Ha!
Nice.
I totally remember that Hershey's commercial!
These are so comforting and nostalgic!
I never knew chia pets were around this long!!! They didnt have thr catchy tune until the 2000s... Wow
Everyone's glasses cover half of their faces-- so freaking HUGE!
That was definitely the norm back then. Sometime in the early 2000s I switched to the new "cool" thin ones but before that they were always like that and we just sort of accepted that glasses were ugly.
Wow.

Even the Commercials were better then.
Those Levis ads are remake-able today.
I was born in late 1971. This was my coming of age commercials. It's amazing how different they are from today. How the hell did we function without the web? I hardly remember.
We did great without all this worthless technology...
We were a hell of a lot better off without all this damned technology which has pulled the country down as Low as it can get
I remember "Bad Idea" Jeans from SNL: "Let's challenge these Brooklyn guys to a basketball game"😆😆😆😀😀😝
Clap on! (Claps hands twice). Clap off! (Claps hands twice). Clap on, clap off! The Clapper!
It was a ridiculous product...
@@dalemulholland2387 I'll say! The gosh darn thing didn't work right!
Wow..Charlie Perfume?

back when men and women actually respected their relationships and did things for each other. You can see it in the commercials.
Today it's just get laid as much as possible. I guess it's cool people feel empowered to do that but it doesn't create a loving environment for longer relationships.
7:27 wine coolers were a defining product of the 1980s
I agree! I would have to rank 84 in the top 3 as being one of the best years in the 80s IMHO
A Mac what's the other two?
Max Mercury 86 at 2nd place and 89 at 3rd. 89 was good, but mostly sad 😭 for me because I was starting to take notice that styles and trends were changing.

Also the pacing of commercials began to speed up in the 1980s.
That would be followed by the movies doing the same, with "Top Gun" having what was called "MTV style editing."
Pioneer commercial is like Bateman having dinner with Van Patten’s punk but gentrified cousins.
1984 was a beautiful year.
I was in 7th grade.
Indeed.
Bring back the Mc DLT!!
did you see Wesley Snipes in the Levi's commercial.
hahahaahahaah I TOLD YOU MOM!
Where was he?
Never mind, found him! at 7:02
You can still get a microwave for $87 in 2019.
Of course, $87 dollars then is the same as $215 today. That stereo would have cost over $1,100 in today's money.
In 1984, a GE SpaceSaver microwave was about $400.
# cheap.
How I wish it was back then
The McDLT seems like a concession that McD's previously had been using either warm lettuce, or cold burgers, or both.
Anyone remember running to grab snacks?
Thanks for the memories
Chi chi chi Chia!!!
I’ll always remember 1984 as the year Michael Jackson’s hair caught on fire filming the Pepsi commercial. Remember?
Yup!!
@@DavesArchives yes Dave yes 😇.
That big sigh when her mom picks up the Aqua Fresh. 😂
That Fresh Start detergent commercial that woman in the dress was hot!
3:52 this is a great jingle for Pioneer!

Ads from 1984 (finale).
That's it.
Ah, the McDLT, a good marketing concept while it lasted.

retluoc I like the Jason Alexander doing a chorus line McDLT commercial.

I really liked the McDLT!
The McDLT was great, but the cheese should have been on the hot side.
Huh.
Lets do it again
Anyone feel like the music in the Hershey's ad (around 13 minutes in) sounds a lot like the song "Heart of Rock n' Roll" by Huey Lewis and the News?
That mcdlt great sandwich.
The 1985 Nova was actually a Toyota Corrolla with Chevy insignia.
It’s hard to believe that two-faced wife when she says, “you smell so clean!”
Ch ch ch chia!!
CDs in 1984?
Yes matter of fact Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA" and Prince's "Purple Rain" albums both released in 1984 were two of the first albums available on the new compact laser disc also known as CD's.
Also yes.
McDLT was out in 84?
Yep, I remember my dad getting one on our way to the Outer Banks that year.
True.
Whatever happened to fretter
Hm. I thought McDLT came in 1985 or 1986.
No no nope it was 1984 during the summer I remember it so well my first year of college. Everybody when finished with classes went to get the new McDLT BS. I hated McDonald's food back then and still do only thing I can handle from them are their chicken McNuggets and fries.
1:01 the McDLT lol
Commercials are so annoying today. Esp any Liberty Mutual Limu Emu ones. Ugh
That Pioneer commercial shows that despite their cultural and political differences, white people can find a way to coexist.
Hahahahahahahaha
You killed me with that one!
Ha.
Where were Hills department stores? Not in Illinois.
Ohio
Boom 💥 💥 💥 💥 💥 💥.
A woman in a suit is a definite fashion nightmare
Sure this isn’t 1985 or 86?
Yo that guy at 7:15 is wesley snipes!!!
Holy moly it sure is!
📌@00:12 That was too expensive even by today's standards.🎧😂
6:01 what the hell was that? Was that stop motion or does the bird really fly like that???
12:34 those new wave VIBES though 👌😩
Back then punk rockers colored their hair, the 40+ crowd doing it now i don't understand
PEOPLES DRUG!
If you have gingivitis please don’t use aqua fresh. Go to your dentist and get some proper medicine
Seriously tho, reading her diary is whack.
The '80s so f*** the Nova .
