Nice explanation. We didn't see what it did. It might have done something worse to the data than the intersection. Say if the polygon was self intersected at a place where legal right of way was being defined. I have real (apparent) intersections where two fields meet at the corner but they are under the same ownership. The polygons 'share' a node and that gets defined as a self intersection when it is not. In that case I have to fudge it with a 1cm corridor to act as a join. Very annoying.
Thanks - at last when I search for a fix someone shows me exactly what I needed and fixed some terrible geometry on a layer given to me in seconds!
