To the Tommy haters - yes, Ace is the original member, and his 8 years or so with the band were key to the band's career and start-up, but he's only a small part of KISS's history. Kullick and Thayer both have longer tenures than Frehley, and both guitarists were part of successful eras of KISS and Thayer is a phenomenal guitarist and vocalist in his own right, able to play songs from each former KISS guitarist and his own, and his fifteen year tenure with KISS is a testament to that.
He plays Ace-era KISS songs in a way that's reminiscent of him, but brings his own style to the table, and he's an expert vocalist - and one of my idols and inspirations as a guitarist, and I watch and listen to Thayer-era guitar playing all the time to try and emulate and learn from his playing.
Anyway, there are generations of KISS fans where Frehley is barely on the radar. Kids grew up listening to the highly successful 1980s-era of KISS, and there are KISS fans like myself who were born in the 1990s and grew up in the Thayer era, where old records and archived concert footage is the only bit of Ace that we'll ever see. I can recognize Ace's early years as influential to the ultimate direction of KISS in the early years, but as proven by KISS's success and longevity after he left, he's clearly not absolutely irreplaceable.
Thayer is a big KISS and Ace Frehley fan, and he was put in the dream position of working for the band and eventually being a back-up to Frehley in the reunion years, ultimately being paid by Stanley and Simmons to adopt the persona full-time. Can you say you wouldn't be a version of the Spaceman if Simmons said "Wear this outfit and I'll give you a massive check"?
I have wondered what a Thayer-persona would be that wasn't the Spaceman, but it doesn't really matter, since Simmons and Stanley pull the strings anyway, and Thayer isn't uncomfortable in his role as the Spaceman character, and he is clearly a valuable member of the band in his position.

Tbh I actually prefer Shock me and Outta this world mixed together than just one or the other and i dont care who wears the makeup, as long as they play good
Unless you are from an era where KISS was literally taking over the world you cannot appreciate a genius like Ace Frehlley. Yes you can go online and find things but you cannot actually feel what the impact of KISS was on the world at that time. Ace, Peter, Paul and Gene are KISS. Paul and Gene know this but have personal and egotistical views on this matter.They can try to play dress up with two guys to capture that original formula and to a certain extent the brainwashing has worked just listen to you but the people they want to convince people like myself they cant so they just take a deep breath and count the money.

Has KISS even made any new records? I guess if they were any good I would've known. Unbelievable, Tommy Thayer making music as Ace. At least Eric Carr and Vinnie Vincent came up with their own characters.

I bet a thousand dollars that if Gene, Paul, Tommy, and Eric were the original lineup from 1973 and then they left and Ace and Peter came in you guys would say that they suck. I'm tired of hearing that KISS is a cover band nowadays. If you haters think you can do better then do it and shut up and stop crying, because the fact is that Tommy and Eric are good and KISS is still one of the best bands Today.

Tommy is an excellent singer and guitarist, he took on a difficult role, he probably didn't create another character because of Paul and Gene himself. Everyone knows that Spaceman is a classic, and they found someone they managed to keep with attitude.

I agree. Tommy should have his own character. But it's also kinda cool thinking that Ace and Tommy are like "the same species" because Tommys make-up has quite a lot small changes - like a different face.

But seriously, I think the main reason for not having Tommy and Eric come up with their own characters and makeup is money plain and simple. KISS corp. owns the characters and profits from usage of them, not Tommy and Eric. It's not throwing negativity at KISS, it's the truth. Tommy and Eric won't profit as the Catman or the Spaceman post-KISS because they don't own the characters. Paul and Gene as well as whichever child of theirs they grant ownership of the company to will make all the money utilizing the gimmicks Ace and Peter created.
In truth I think Eric and Tommy would make more money as musicians in the long run by having their own bands. I know Paul is very KISS centered but he should loosen the yolk and allow Tommy and Eric to play in their own bands when not contractually obligated to be with KISS. Eric still has ESP and I'm sure Tommy can get a band together, maybe reform Black & Blue or go in a different musical direction altogether, perhaps into making true Metal music. Tommy definitely has the right sound for it.

Good point. Gene & Paul plugged these two guys into the line up mid tour when Ace & Peter bailed after Australia. They thought it would be easier to just keep the wheels turning like this because the reason people started going to KISS concerts again was to be able to experience something that they thought they weren't ever gonna. It's why I went to 7 shows starting in 96. I saw them 3 times on one tour. I was on shrooms and paper acid all 7 times, but that's just how I like to go to concerts. Its a religious experience for me.

I am a the biggest ACE fan. The "Outta This World" was actually pretty good. The "Shock Me" sucked beyond belief.
The first line of Shock Me should be "Ace's lighting is all I need..."
Amazing on how people bag on Tommy and Eric when Ace and Peter gave up the colors for a Million EACH and didn't give a shit about KISS! People sure forget how bad those two were. I've seen KISS 10 times and aside from the beginning those two SUCKED! These guys at least care and always do their best. I'd rather see Tommy and Eric anytime those hacks! And I am 58 and from New York and was on board since Dressed to Kill!

Ace blew it had 2 chances and couldn't keep it together. I grew up with Kiss in 70's and Ace was massive back then. The Reunion tour was embarrassing Ace played like crap.

You gotta give Tommy some credit though. Yes, it's not as good as Ace, but considering Tommy had a big place to fill when Ace left he's not doing a bad job. He can sing quite well, and he has very good guitar skills. Yes, he will never come close to Ace, but he's not a horrible addition to KISS.

I could see letting Ace slip by because he was never a good singer to begin with, but Paul? I have high expectations. Same goes for his songs. When he whips out a weak (Gene-ish?) song like "Bang Bang You" or "Read My Body" I cringe.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed. Even his act is robotic. The way he points and the way he tries to hold his guitar. I even see him doing Ace's thumbs up. So sad.
