don t you think they made those laws because it was ran like those prison for profit where they only got to make a paper to keep you indefinite amount of time until you are healed ... i do not claim to have the answer but in this day and age i dont trust people having too much control ( would it be so hard for agency like the fbi plus no court ...)

Great episode and I'd love to add some of my own experiences as a life long California resident and I've been a local news photojournalist, covering Orange, Riverside and Los Angeles counties. Just in my town the homeless problem has become out of control and I've seen just about everything. Recently I saw a lady get out of her van and within walking three feet away towards the store, a man came running up and stole her car, that she had left running. The Hispanic/Migrant gang member who stole car almost hit her with her own car as she went chasing after him while he was peeling out of the parking lot. The OCSD arrived and while taking notes from the victim, he asked her if she had ever been arrested for prostitution and that shocked me. The poor lady just was nearly car-jacked, had her car stolen with Christmas gifts inside and the local idiot cops treated her like she was a suspect. I called 911 a few months back on a homeless man standing butt naked in public. The same OCSD Deputy's came out and gave the guy a blanket and left. Now I know he does this almost every day and I've since seen this same guy in different states of undress in a busy public area. Even more sad than that is we have elderly women who are homeless and it is absolutely heartbreaking to see. I can only imagine what they have gone through on these rough streets. I think of my grandparents and it just breaks my heart to see defenseless old ladies pushing a cart, sleeping in the cold and dealing with all of the crazy gang members, dealers and mentally ill people. If you're homeless here or a "migrant" you can get away with almost everything. The cops here are discouraged from talking to illegals and this all started about 15 years ago when law enforcement were no longer allowed to ask them their immigration status. Now illegals in California can get regular California Drivers License's or I.D.'s which allows them the ability to drive and probably even vote, lol. I constantly see people stealing from the stores, while meanwhile goods/groceries have risen to such high prices.
I've lived in this town before for five or six years while growing up in the early 2000's and we had one homeless man. Back then I met Republican Governor Arnold Schwarnezegger twice and both times he had no (visible) armed security and was the nicest down to earth guy. Under his rule we had law and order and one homeless person in my town. Now we have untold numbers, but there are easily over 100-150 homeless people just in our small town. There is a turnover, there are new people showing up all of the time and some move on or are arrested and we don't see them again, or sometimes they'll eventually show back up. The beach is close enough where you can walk or ride a bike there, so get why there are homeless people here, but obviously something changed. When I was growing up here there was basically no homeless and certainly no open air drug use. We had one homeless guy who everyone knew and helped. Now we have hundreds and people are smoking fentanyl, even right in front of the local rehab and methadone clinic. Literally smoking fentanyl in front of the only place where people can try and get help. I could tell so many stories, but this is obviously a result of leftist/democratic policies. The democrats have absolutely ruined this wonderful state. Even Orange County where I live and was brought up has gone to hell. A cyclist was recently stabbed to death in the middle of a really busy intersection in broad daylight and in front of at least 30 witnesses. The suspect hit the cyclist with his car first, got out and stabbed the guy to death in front of everyone. It's really bad here and unfortunately the cops are just as bad. They don't do shit, they hide everything and they mistreat journalist like myself. It's gotten to the point where I no longer recognize my town, my state or country and I went from supporting law enforcement to thinking they are a complete joke. Recently a homeless guy in Los Angeles pulled out his penis and chased after a female jogger, caught up to her and tried to rape her from behind. The L.A. County District Attorney Gascon has charged the man/crime as a misdemeanor? Plus that same week a father and his live-in girlfriend were given sentences of 10 years and 15 years for torturing and murdering the mans teenage son. Plus we the voters of California have voted for the death penalty and we still sentence the worst of the worst to death, but the Governor refuses to put anyone to death. I am convinced that the State of California now puts criminals rights over victims rights.
The Police are so busy with violent crimes and mentally ill people that most crimes are unsolved and or the charges are never filed. In some area's like where my nephew is a Police Officer, they only respond to Code-3 calls and in between those he stops suspected gang-members and other criminals on traffic stops and he averages getting 5 guns off the streets every week. His department has an OIS rate of 1 out of 6 officers and his one SGT., has been in six different OIS incidents as a shooter and cleared on every one. My nephew is in his early 20's and joined the Police department instead of enlisting in the Army. My mother and I who helped raise him talked him out of the Army and he has since thanked us both with a nice letter. He's making over $120,000 a year plus benefits and he is making a difference. He helps the Gang squad and narcotics. He was telling me the other day that his department and other's are now asking federal agencies to adopt cases, so that the criminals have to face actual justice. So anytime a serious offender reoffends or hurts law enforcement, or commits any crimes that are also Federally illegal, they'll call DEA, FBI, ATF, HSI or whoever to adopt the case. That is how sick law enforcement is with the State of California! Watching the slow decline of my town and my state has been hard. My nephew who works a really dangerous area of San Bernardino tells and shows us some crazy things he sees almost daily. He's constantly chasing after criminals who run with guns in their hands and he's almost had to shoot a couple of times and he is only in his second year as a cop. He's seen countless deaths, had people die in his arms, he's seen it all. He used to have to clear this abandoned mall and there are literally zombies in there. Homeless addicts and people living in this dark and rundown mall, and people screaming, walking around like zombies and people on meth, fentanyl. He's seen both men and women with the ass of their pants cut open so others can more easily rape the weak. It's unreal and so sad, I honestly believe we are beyond reproach and I have no hope in our future!

I've got 21 years as a cop in California. There is NOTHING the state could dangle in front of me that would keep me on the job or in this state. Most of us have divested from the state, department leaderships, and the people of California. He is absolutely right we are just riding it out. The state hasn't even begun to attempt to stop the bleeding. Restorative Justice is still on the lips of every diversity hire manager propelled into positions of authority.

You ought to move East to NJ, NY, MASS, etc and continue with your career. It's literally day and night. Our cops and community don't play that shit. Our homeless kicks out, does not tolerate those that come from California and try that, here. I come from a family of Police officers, State Troopers, Captains, Captain of Juvenile... You might really like it here.

Just build shelters and bring all the homeless folks on the streets inside. It's not that complicated. I realize that Newsom is a globalist who doesn't really care about regular people, but the issue shouldn't really have anything to do with left versus right politics. Everyone benefits if you bring it inside- same with the situation around junky drug addictions. Support effective indoor treatment and maintenance programs.

As someone who has lived in California almost all of my life. This state has been going to shit for a long time. I live in far northern California in Redding, and the homelessness here is insane. My wife and daughter will not go anywhere at night without me. Because they are afraid and my wife and I both have concealed carrys. It's sad that this once beautiful state has become such a black mark in the country. We have horrible taxes, horrible homelessness problem, horrible drug problem, horrible crime problem, horrible housing crisis, and the worst gun laws in the country. Like I said, We have concealed carrys, but if we were to use them in self defense. We would be the ones arrested and sent to prison, but pedophiles and sexual predators get a slap on the wrist. It really disgusting to see. Great job Shawn on getting the real stories and not the bullshit we are fed on the news. Keep up the great work bro!!!

California gun laws especially are mind blowing. Someone who defends themselves or others are not only treated like but considered criminals and usually charged with a crime. It’s like living in the upside down

I live in California and just opened my yearly insurance bill for my 2 work trucks (one is 20 years old the other is 6 years old) and my equipment (19 years old). Last year it was $3879 and this new bill is $5923...a $2044 increase in one year. I called my insurance agent and she said, "our rates have stayed the same, but so many insurance companies have left California because of all the govt. regulation and more strict rules that the rates have sky rocketed" Not to mention they've made it mandatory that I carry workers comp. insurance....but I DON'T HAVE ANY EMPLOYEES!!! It just makes me want to work for cash, be homeless and collect the cash the state is giving homeless people, instead of working myself to death and have nothing to show for it. I've just about had it with this fucking state. Their agenda is to kill small businesses and they are doing a great job of it.

It is possible to turn your life around if you put the effort in.!! I now have 3 1/2 years clean and sober. But I think he is right the vast majority of homeless are addicts with mental illness. I live in commiefornia and i disagree with Mr. Shellenberger, this state is definitely not libertarian. If that was the case we wouldnt be in such an authoritarian/ police state, our rights are eroded more and more everyday yet Californians still vote these morons into office. We are a very progressive, socialistic state and are treated like children too dumb to think for ourselves (sadly most are). I feel bad for all the states where Californians are moving, they run from here due to most of their politics yet vote the same in their new "home" state. Mr Shellenberger has some good ideas but sad to say you cant expect much change when they always vote the same way. I pray daily my fellow Californians wake up and see these policies don't work. Sorry for rant, keep up the great work. This is the best podcast in my opinion, hands down. Much love to you and your family.

I have slept in Tent City and a Park. Mr. Shellenberger knows what he is talking about. I used to be addicted to Fentanyl (back when it was cut with just Etizolam). I currently take Methadone daily. I met a woman that I fell in love with that saved my life and we are now living together happily and almost common-law. next year I intend to go back to school at 38 years old. I have said many times after my experiences as a police officer in the inner-city that the biggest heartbreak and toughest pill to swallow was knowing that statistically most of the kids would not realize 1/10th of their potential. This endless cycle of failure continues grinding up the most vulnerable with a sense of sick self-righteousness. Those responsible for the failure believe themselves entitled to take our money to fund themselves and their failed ideas, tell us we cannot have a voice because of "insert label here", and some have the gall to blame taxpayers for the human carnage they have wrought. At this point, what do we have to lose?

I have a lot of respect for Michael Shellenberger, as we share many political beliefs. In the past, my status as a registered Independent allowed me to vote on both sides of the aisle, something I proudly say yielded a 50/50 democrat/republican voting record over the years. However, the emergence of this new brand of Republicanism has forced me to register as a Democrat. I remain committed to the democrat party until we move past the Trump MAGA MTG era and a return to logic, reason, and a clear conservative platform reemerges.
During the interview, Shellenberger said that "California represents the best of America and the worst of America." This is the truth, no doubt. Yet, it's crucial to recognize that California is not a monolith; its vastness can’t be ignored in these discussion as it needs to allow for these different challenges when tossing around the term “California” as if it’s some tiny state.
Consider this: Los Angeles alone has a population surpassing that of Wyoming, Vermont, Alaska, North Dakota, and South Dakota COMBINED! And that's merely one city, not accounting for San Diego, Sacramento, San Francisco, Orange County, and others. For perspective, the state's 40 million people outnumber the entire population of Canada. In addition, California spans 1,274,280 square miles-larger than the combined area of Rhode Island, Delaware, Wyoming, Vermont, Alaska, Montana, South Dakota, North Dakota, New Hampshire, Maine, Iowa, Arkansas, and Arizona. Do you think managing California might be a little different than managing states who are smaller that just one of California cities?
The prevalent narrative that attributes societal issues solely to "California" oversimplifies the situation. Challenges are concentrated in certain parts of densely populated cities, a pattern seen not only in California but also in major cities across the nation. This is a statistical fact. Every one of Michael’s stories can be found in every City of more than 1 million in the US, including “Red States”, its a condition of population density in the US.
While I acknowledge that Democrats have failed major cities in addressing these challenges, I find the current trajectory of Trump-era Republicans far more concerning and perilous to all of America. The reluctance of both parties to admit mistakes is a shared problem.
For instance, the Democratic approach to crime and homelessness has proven flawed. While initially well-intentioned, policies such as incarcerating individuals for stealing necessities have backfired, creating a new wave of criminal behavior. It's time for an admission of failure and a commit to finding new solutions that actually work!
Likewise, addressing homelessness should involve compassion without compromising public spaces. Admitting that past strategies haven't worked is the first step toward meaningful change, but folks on the left just double down and won’t admit they fucked things up.
This is where the parallel with Trump-era Republicans becomes evident. Just as Democrats must acknowledge their missteps, Republicans, too, need to recognize the flaws in the current MAGA brand of leadership. The refusal to acknowledge the issues with Trump is a threat to our fundamental values, and we’re slowly seeing the bravest of Republicans coming out, but not enough to stop him and other like him yet.

As an Independent who loves the USA, I see the Democrats as the bigger threat because they're actively destroying my home!

Now imagine we have 6 parties in the US and the die hard liberals just vote for their liberal candidate while people in the center, right, conservative split their votes among the other parties. You effectively hand over a win to the liberals. Liberals will never not vote liberal, where other, normal, rational people will change their minds from time to time because that's what logical people do when presented with new, relevant, accurate, factual information.

I was lucky enough to take a cross country road trip with a friend back in 2005. I’d alwanted to see San Francisco for years. Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman’s wharf, Lombard street, and definitely, height ashbury streets, where Jefferson airplane and the grateful dead lived. It was a fantastic city…. , back then. What they’re describing to me about how San Francisco is now, is a crying shame. That really was a once fantastic city.

The second one they were giving me Dilaudid and it didn’t take any of the pain away and finally gave me some ketamine which took away all the pain. By the grace of God I’ve finally found peace and serenity through recovery. To be compassionate towards addiction is all fine and good until you let them not have to accept their part in the problem. I don’t expect anything from anyone for free . I understand that I’m the only one that can fix me. If you keep enabling these folks then you’re just as much part of the problem. Hence the liberal mind set. We run into other issues when addicts are facing incarceration, they will go through a program to appease the court then go back to old ways once they’ve completed the program

I so appreciate your compassion. But….. Two people I love very much were addicts. They destroyed everyone and everything in their lives. If you helped them, you were helping them to get just well enough to go back to the regular life.
The only thing that changed both of them was the choice of go to prison or go to mandated rehab and if you screw up at any time after rehab…..you go straight to prison. No Lawyers will get you out of it. No amount of money will get you out of it. You will go straight to prison and we will throw away the key.
I also worked in the medical field for 27 years. We had many diabetics that had feet legs, hands arms amputated, but continued to spend their money every day for honey buns, and anything else they can find. They were well taken care of at that nursing home and they knew no matter what happened to them as a result of their addiction to sugar. The government would get them a new wheelchair and a better bed, etc. One man ended up with just a body…… No arms, no legs and still demanded it was his right to eat whatever he wanted to every day.
It is a lie that addicts will hit rock bottom. The only thing that changes their mind is the threat of prison for more years than they are able to imagine.

The main reason CA and America in general has gone down hill is because we have lost the fear of God and a moral compass is gone. If you have no standard of righteousness, you will live like an animal. You can't fix CA with housing and programs. Never! People need heart changes from Holy Spirit.
