  • Softail Slim Saddlebags that do not require detachable docking brackets, or relocation kits for the brake lights and license plate or docking hardware that would otherwise result in altering the instantly timeless lines of a Harley Davidson Masterpiece! See custom leather throw over saddlebags designed for instant mounting and removal for convenience and security purposes.
    Modern Bounty Hunter Rex Venator teams up with the Masters of Leather working at the Leatherworks in Stockton, California who took his napkin design and produced a totally functional set of throw-over, Pony Express style saddlebags for the 2013 Harley Davidson Softail Slim that takes seconds to securely mount for freeway speeds and remove for security purposes to have lunch or book a room for the night.
    Following Rex's design, the Leatherworks craftsmen also incorporated a channel within the Yoke to alleviate peroneal nerve compression, common to bicyclists, for those longer runs common to motorcycle enthusiasts.

    The Solo Spring Saddle is approximately $300.00.
    The Spring Seat Installation Kit is about 280.00.
    While the literature and descriptions make it sound like it’s all an easy installation, I strongly suggest having the above professionally installed the first time! The first installation is “Not Easy!”
    I suggest trying the stock seat, and you may find that you slide back during acceleration; moreover, I didn’t find the stock seat very comfortable. I dig the Solo Spring Saddle.

    Thank you for the feedback, KanalSeb99.
    I swapped out the stock seat because it was too squishy, and I slid back onto the fender while rolling the throttle back; moreover, for some reason, the stock seat was hard on my tailbone.
    The Solo Seat rides an inch or so higher and pushed me forward closer to the handlebars. I don't slide back, and my tailbone pain stopped.
    I hope this helps.

    Very nice! I've been looking at the Softail Slim as well, but didn't realize there would be an issue with attaching saddlebags. This is great to know! Thanks for the informative post!

    glad you addressed that. The bike looks great! I was just wondering about that seat though. I'm riding to Sturgis from Vegas this year and not sure how the solo seat will hold up. I guess we'll just have to see.

    My suggestion would be to ring The Leatherworks and quiz them about your question.
    The bags profiled are 100% custom made Pony Express bags with my Yoke design.
    If it works for your and your bike that would be great!

    The front tool bag setup has an issue with water being forced in if you happen to be caught out in the rain.
    Mine was the same but I did a little bit of modification and turned it around so the bag opens towards me.
    Great video,great bike.

    Thanks for sharing the point, wfphahn.
    Do some research, and you will find that the readily available saddlebags, docking brackets and required Relocation Kits (that jam the tail lights and license plates together on the center of the rear fender) will run very close in price to what I have in the bike’s pipes and seat.
    I got cool pipes, a way more comfortable seat AND the bags for about the same cost as just the bags and no seat or pipes. Kick it around...

  • @RexVenator
    @RexVenator  11 років тому

    I personally think that the the Solo Seat is remarkably more comfortable than than the stock seat. The Solo Seat has springs that work and add to the shock absorbing overall feel to the ride of the Softail Slim.
    Thanks for the Feedback!

    Yes, let the Leatherworks know that you're looking for the same setup as Rex.
    Apologies for belated reply; I've been on the road.

    Good. The fender paint stay intact but one thing bothers me is the bags pipe proximity. From my point of view they are about a centimeter or so to each others.

    • @RexVenator
      @RexVenator  7 років тому +2

      Good observation.
      I've been running this set up since the video was posted, and the bag near the pipes are not damaged in any way.
      The cool thing, however, is that dropping a Subway or other to-go meal on the bag on the side of the pipes is like a mini warmer that doesn't get too hot.
      ;-)

    I presume you didn't try it with the stock seat but what's your gut feeling about how your yoke and pony express bags would work with it or other solo seats?

  • @RexVenator
    @RexVenator  11 років тому

    I decided to change the stock seat to the Solo Seat long before deciding to order custom made saddlebags, so yes.
    The Pony Express Saddlebags are The Leatherworks creations, but the yoke, however, is something that has to be carefully measured and cut for each person’s motorcycle.
    The rig shown will work on Slims with or without a Solo Seat so long as the yoke is custom made.

    I have a Slim, and have been struggling with a solution for bags. This is exactly what I am looking for. If I contact them and tell them I want the same bags as Rex Ventator are they going to know what I am talking about or did they give these bags a specific name or style other that the Pony Express bag?

    Hi Rex. Great video; great job. 1 question please:
    May I ask if the bags are compatible with passenger foot pegs?

      Pilos Affirmative. Ring The Leatherworks for questions on how this works.

  • @RexVenator

    As I noted, the cost for the saddlebags, pipes AND seat were consistent with the title of this video.

    Hey Rex, great videos! I'm looking at getting a slim in march...how tall are you? I'm 6'3" and was concerned there may be a height issue. I do want to switch the stock saddle to the springer seat, that looks awesome!

      Greetings: I suggest sitting on a Slim and having someone take a picture for you to see.
      I think you may find that a higher riding bike may fit better.

    Do you have to change the seat or will these bags fit with the standard seat? Also can you give me a rough Idea of the cost of the bags? I am purchasing a 2014 slim.. Great video, thanks for sharing.

      *****The stock seat on the Softail Slim left me sliding back when pulling back on the throttle and was a bit too squishy for me personally, so I opted for the solo spring seat that stopped the sliding and offered a little bit more spring as well.
      The solo seat will raise the rider an inch or so, so it is important to get good measurements for the yoke between the saddlebags.
      The Leatherworks' staff will have more information on how to measure for a stock seat, I believe.
      Good luck and Ride Safe.

    Thanks for taking the time to do this Rex. What model bags are those? I can't find "pony express" on Leatherworks site and this option doesn't show up when you use the motorcycle make search. I have a Slim with a stock seat and V&H Big Radius 2-2, been looking for throw overs to store incidentals like you.

    Lastly, I really think the tail lights and license plates should not be relocated and jammed together on the rear fender, in my personal opinion.

    Well, let me think, wfphahn, I spent over $849.00 on bags alone, another $99.00 on the license plate relocation kit, $109.00 on the turn signal relocation kit, $59.95 on the docking hardware, and then another $300.00 or so having my local dealer install everything for approximately $1,600.00 after tax! Do you research before making ignorant "NOT!" statements!
