The remaster does look much improved, my only problems are that joker looks way too clean and Hugo strange looks like he's wearing a fake glued on beard.
I can't be the only one who wanted Origins to be in this remaster, right?
it wasn’t possible because rocksteady did not develop origins, but warner bros montreal.
@@maurodmg9441yeah tell those fuckers to remaster it, instead of making the most mid super hero game in existence being Gotham Shite’s
In my opinion, penguin looks like the most worked on character in the remaster, he looks so real.
Uh, no… he looked 20 years younger. He has an unnatural, pale complexion and a very thin face compared to his body.
2:44 old version looks so much better
In my opinion the cutscenes look better on the old version. But the in-game textures look better in the new version.
@@albertoquinones1173 Yeah because that is simply the case. The original version had video clips it played for cutscenes and the remake used the in-game models
The made everything so bright and took the shadows out. The shadows and the darkness is what contributed to Asylums atmosphere so much.
Can we appreciate how good the original version looked on PS3/360? I remember playing it for the first time and being blown away by how awesome it looked. Still holds up well to this day.
This game truly looks phenomenal on 360/PS3 as compared to other games from the same era. I recently tried Fable 2 & Fallout new vegas on my series S & they both look pretty awful tbh
@@MrTheDarkKnightFan New Vegas aged like milk tbh since it already looked dated on release but it's still one of the greatest games I've ever played
2009 man. That’s how old this game is. And yet wow the OG graphics still hold up so well!
11:48 AAAAAAHHH
I don't know why his mouth reminds me of Henry Cavill with vfx from JL
9:13 real looking coin, 9:18 more real looking coin, 9:23 EVEN MORE REA... wait wtf
I just don’t like the way the remastered city in general. Batman’s background is always suppose to have a dark background that is complimented with a tone of blue, it’s why asylum was done so well, a lot of the green was changed to blue. But now everything looks weird and the background doesn’t contrast with everything else correctly
@@canceritself1854 if they fucked up a little thing, that just means they fucked up on major things aswell.
@@onyeokegbe1962 Don't for get the Red areas too like the halls and all around the Island.
I know arkham origins wasn't from rocksteady but I still wish they remastered that one too.
Yeah but that game is already ugly, so why remaster it to look even uglier?
batmans face looks way better in the old version
+Rey I love Arkham Asylum, but Batman looks like a fucking toe. I do prefer the lighting on the characters tho, more specifically for the Joker.
I prefer the environment in the return to arkham remaster. I just like the character models and intractables in the original version the most
The faces were remastered weirdly. They look cartoonish.
Don't Ask To Stealth That's because Knight is the newest game. There's only so much that can be done when making a remaster.
Return to Arkham is pretty much the last Arkham game release
Alex Beamer I heard Montreal is making a Suicide Squad game which is apparently going to have coop and they're working on a new Batman game that's set in the future in which you play as Damien Wayne and Bruce is retired from Batman. I'm pretty sure it will be a new Batman sub-series and won't be tied to the Arkham series
BeastBlood1996 Nah, I'm pretty sure there will be another game. Maybe not by Rocksteady.
BeastBlood1996 Seriously? Enough batman! I want a green arrow or flash game
Harley looks the best out of most of the updating things, joker looks less detailed for some reason.
Giel De Cloet Yeah, I’m not a fan of her overall model redesign. The colors are very cartoonish.
batman and joker look 1,000 times better on the original but the environment and objects look amazing!
Teenage Hustler agreed. But is it worth playing the new ones? I bought and while I still have them on old gen, I was disappointed in the new models!
Joker is the only thing that looks bad from the update.
foxhound13 Thank god, i thought i was the only one who is still meh about joker...
lol did you even see Hugo?? even some shots of batman himself look like a downgrade
He looks better in the city remaster imo and he looked great in the asylum elevator into the introduction. But in most scenes, especially asylum, he looks cartoony
foxhound13 what a lot of people are not catching though is that several characters have actually been substantially reworked. That's why Batman's cowl seems to have "lost" detail in the forehead and eyebrow sculpt. A different artist has updated various details of characters. The most noticeable is Joker because if you look carefully you'll notice his suit is actually very different when it comes to the details. The remaster has a new sculpt and texture and when that's rendered on new tech on a different version of the game engine things will look different. To me, it seems they intentionally wanted to subdue the details for stylistic reasons. The original game had very pronounced facial details, this game makes things like facial wrinkles less harsh and, in my opinion, more lifelike.
My only complaint is that the frame rate of the remaster is locked at 30fps if I recall correctly. That's unfortunate but I'll still buy this game even though I own Arkham on every platform it's been released on haha
anyone else notice how big his mouth is in the remaster
ClickzyyGaming I noticed right away. Such a poor design decision. Makes him look like a Neanderthal when he talks.
Back at the day, the big ass mouths and eyes were to make up for the lack well pixels and details that the consoles were capable of pushing out.
This is honestly the first remaster that I can genuinely say "woah I can actually notice the difference"
Arkham City detective mode looks much better in remastered. There’s no fog.
The less details or fog was done by purpose by Rocksteady because they didn't want players to keep Detective Mode turned on the entire time.
Remaster looks good to me. Don't know why so many people think it doesn't
Because those people are haters, ignorants, blind or see only one flaw and don't see other pluses.
ᅟᅟᅟ ᅟᅟᅟ because people are looking at every intricate detail when they've done an amazing job, but they have payed more attention to the environment than the characters
ᅟᅟᅟ ᅟᅟᅟ because theres still ALOT that looks like a downgrade and the shit frame rate
The view of Arkham City in the PS4 remastered version is breathtaking!
0:44 they fixed the toilet, great!!!
Great video. I think this one does the remaster a lot more justice than other videos. It looks like some of the character models got a downgrade in the remaster, but all of the environments and lighting look amazing.
The models didn't change, what changed were the textures, actual hair simulation, global illumination and bloom, because it's not really a big remaster, it's more of a engine port to Unreal Engine 4, and believe me, Batman Arkham Knight was made with Unreal Engine 3.
Rain effects + lighting from the remastered, with character models from the PC version is probably the best combo.
The remaster is...well it's not like they didn't try like I mean they've revamping the textures and shadows, lighting effects, and other effects but the problem is the lighting is weird and bipolar, it's either darker in some spots and so bright in some spots while the original understand that even though its dark in the room its movie/video game dark meaning we should see it, I mean for Arkham Knight the way they use lighting is fine but for Asylum and City where the games are more stylized to look like a comic book it's just off, every character has a weird plastic sheen to their face and skin ultimately making it more like a cartoon. Like in 7:09 Hugo Strange on the left face looks so much better his face has defining lines, texture and hair and eyebrows that looks like real hair not ones you buy from a halloween shop.
they were also working with a smaller budget for aslyum and made the lighting work as such where they changed the lighting the game being remade in UE4 and that makes it look worse, best upgrade tho is the particle effects and lighting in arkham city. This could've been a great remake had they stuck it out longer with this and made a PC version too using the tools and power at their disposal that some ppl will have spent for the highest grade look in game, perhaps bringing nvidia hair works to console as that's what they did with some aspects already in the remake if you look at the dev tools they credit using while you load in
Original - dark and gritty atmosphere, perfected character models with realistic facial expressions and nuances :)
Remaster - better environments, lighting effects etc. but shitty cartoonish remodeled and modified character models with lack of expressions and nuances and also 30fps -_-
Kento/賢人 remaster (for arkham asylum version at least): Looks like an episode of Jimmy neutron
To be fair Gordon does look like a fucking monster out to eat your eyeballs when throughout game he is a side character that wishes to be left alone.
i have to agree gordon looks much better and realistic on next gen
8:30 There's a ton of aliasing on his jaw in the next gen version when he puts on the hood.
Batman looks too grumpy in the Remaster
He's so grump his mouth isn't even rigged right, some of his expressions look weird as hell.
11:53 - Bruce is f****ng smiling!
11:51 HEY LOOK, BRUCE IS SMILING!!!
For a remaster those skin textures look way worse.
digizilla164 it's actually not TBH and besides there is only but so much u can do for a remaster without changing all the codes
ITSJB Its not being called a "remaster" anywhere in its marketing, its not using the "remaster" label as a selling point.
The only people calling it a "remaster" are people making these comparison videos.
everyone looks like toys in the new one
Nuke H20 I like the new remaster ( and love these new rain effects) stop getting so salty for a little bit of criticism
Jeez. What did they do to you Joker?
A Remaster is supposed to be an enhancement of the previous version, not an artistic massacre.
Then explain this comparison between the original and the remaster? At 10:14
@@aftonrobotics1991 Cutscenes look worse for some reason but gameplay does look better
Certainly some texture elements in the update that look slicker, like the rain and viewing distance. But from videos I've seen I still prefer the green hue and darker tone of the original. May pick it up when it's on offer though.
11:56 batman when joker died and harley is now single:
There’s something about the original that’s more aesthetically pleasing than the remaster. There’s this hint of this blueish greenish tint that just makes it look more muddy and stylistic rather than bland and realistic.
The hair in the remasters pisses me off. It's totally demastered. The lighting lacks harmony with the theme of the originals in some cases.
The settings look amazing. The only things I don’t like are some of the character models and the lighting in the buildings. It doesn’t feel as creepy as the original because there are more bright lights and the faces on certain characters.
Thank you for this. I had a ton of questions and this helps
Something about the art style changed in the remaster and I don't like it
yeah, the environments look way better now but they also built the character models from the ground up and they lost that slight visual touch the game had, the characters used to have almost a cel shaded like tone to them that looked really cool and stylish, now its gone. really only the npc characters look better now, so what you have is a huge upgrade but at the cost of making batman and joker look worse.
I agree. The reason i won't buy this is only due to the change of character design, which i find to be worse than the original release.
Awesome comparison. I just got an Xbox 360 version for $2 yesterday so I can compare all 3 versions for myself now. I like the console remaster for its environmental and weather effects and the more authentic leather look of the Batman's and Catwoman's suit. The AA setting outside looks better as well while inside I prefer the PC version.
The remaster looks more like a mod where all the models made brighter and shiner, however, the environment looks fantastic
It's basically like this: hallways, corridors, and crumbling broken walls and floors have amazing updates in the remaster. Colors and shading effects have been massively improved. In a weird way, things look better up close rather than further away, which is weird because it's usually the other way around. Lighting effects from fires shining on walls and such are more subtle and to me work more realistically, not to mention how well fire and explosions look themselves. The biggest issues are obviously the character models. Somehow Batman's face looks very unnerving in Asylum, yet they have it looking better in City. Why they didn't just use the same model for both games, I will never know. The worst character model from both is easily Hugo Strange. The skin textures are not as good, the reflection in his glasses is too clear and should be more subtle, his clothing somehow less texture, and yeah... I don't want to talk about his hair. It's like that old toy where you use the magnet to put facial hair on the picture. It gets weirder though, because then you have clearly better character models like Catwoman. I don't think there is a single downside to her new look. If I had to nitpick, maybe it'd be that her lipstick is way brighter in color. Honestly though, the skin is smoother, and the suit looks like Arkham Knight. Penguin looks much better too, his glass bottle is much clearer and looks very realistic, his skin textures are done much better, he has some noticeable stubble, and his suit looks amazing. I think the downside would probably be the same as all the other characters, that being his hair kinda looks glued on. Then there are some mixed bags like Two Face. His scarred side seems to have more detail put into it while not as much was put into his non- scarred side. His suit is better textured, but again his hair is crap. Kinda ironic that Two Face is done half better and half worse than PC. Joker is tough for me. They took out a lot of detail to simplify his look, and I honestly don't mind it. I think he looks closer to his look in Knight, and he just seems more intimidating to look at. If you pause the video during the death cut scene, just staring at the two side by side it was more unnerving to look at the remaster, and not in a bad "that looks awful" way. With him being the Joker, I feel like adding more color worked better for him too. It also blends better between pre rendered cut scene to gameplay. The only other visual negative I can think of is the water effects. Not like rain, but the textures for the water surrounding both of the islands is better looking and more detailed on PC, despite having less movement with waves.
In the case of frame rate and performance (which this video didn't show off), this is probably how I'd recommend this package: If you are a pc gamer, you won't be getting your 60 frames. You already have a visually stunning game, and you probably don't want to sacrifice frames for a mixed bag in visuals. If you are going from PS3/ 360 to PS4/One, I believe the original games were already at 30 frames, and even with some issues with character models, I still think that there is enough there that is an improvement to visuals that you should go out and get it, maybe at a lowered price. Both games as of the recent patch are both 30fps locked, and they are much closer to the design of Knight now. That is also another added bonus that you can now have all Rocksteady titles on the PS4 including the VR game.
Lighting on character models seems off in the newer versions
The textures in the original Arkham games are starting to show their age, especially since they a have a muddy look to them. I still enjoy both versions, even though they each have their flaws, but I'm very thankful to just be able to play these amazing games filled with childhood memories on my trusty PS4.
The biggest complaint I have is that Return to Arkham loses a lot of the fun coloring the original had. Like, a lot of the large splashes of blues and reds and greens have been removed to make the games look more realistic. Which makes it look less comic book-y.
Wdym? They added in extra color to make the game more comic book-y. If you can see correctly the old arkham games looks more realistic than the remasters. Look at the character models and environments and you'll believe me.
I genuinely got an ad for Return to Arkham.
This makes me want to get return to Arkham on Xbox one even though I already have the originals on Xbox 360
Great comparison video! Thanks!
This confirms what I already thought: I prefer the old graphics. Actually, I'd say, from looking at this video, that the PC version has my favorite look, but since I'm a Mac guy, that's out of the question. So I'll stick with the PS3 version. Sure, in many ways the PS4 update looks better, but I'm a sentimental guy and I came to love the game with the old graphics, and the new ones are just too different in places for me. Furthermore, the people, mainly in the faces, actually look worse to me. Just look at the closeups of Joker and Strange in this video. The new graphics are overly saturated and actually have less detailed in the faces than the old ones. The old ones look better defined. Some of the PS4 shots actually made me wince when seeing the comparison.
So anyway, while the new version isn't bad, I definitely want to stick with the original on this one. If only the new release let us toggle between old and new graphics like the Halo remasters did...
1:17 the guard looks like a cars character the way he moved his head
4:29 Gordon looks so weird in Return to Arkham. Like a weird sex doll.
The old version also didn't look very realistic, but it fitted the style of the game much better.
so far..the best comparison video on youtube..
Can you please do a comparison of the AA and AC challenge/predator maps in AK compared to the remaster of those maps in RTA?
Original version, Batsuit was made from high quality latex and rubber!
Remastered version, EVERYTHING was made from rubber
Never before have I seen so many people blinded by nostalgia to actually say that the original looks better.
Same here! "Original is better". No, it's not. In most parts remasters are better. Just look carefuly.
Knights Of HamillLove That's what I'm saying. They are blinded by nostalgia by saying that the original looks better when it clearly doesn't.
Mark Rezk look at all the character models. The details are gone and they all look even more like wax museum sculptures. And the frame rate is shit
d1asian Then you're an ignorant who only see character models and framerate, only the flaws, not the positives.
7:44 penguin next gen look clean
i felt like the rick and morty theme song was about to play at the beginning there
The new Version looks amazing. We know that by now but the problem is it runs like shit. Looks like you'll need PS4 Pro and Xbox One Scorpio to play it since this mess of a framerate is not even locked. Looks like for now the PC Version is still the best. 60fps over 20-40 mess.
But guess it will run on 60fps on both Scorpio and Pro because of there faster Hardware. Should be good on them but I would not really want to play it on the current Hardware.
" Looks like for now the PC Version is still the best. " This seems to be the situation with every game I can remember on PC since 2007 (when I started PC gaming). Only exception I could think of is how Batman Arkham Knight PC version being pulled from retailers ( my Steam version of the game ran perfectly since day 1)
thewhitewolf My game still stutters like crazy. Can't finish the dlc because of how much is stutters
Lean Pharaoh What hardware do you have?
Please don't say you use a laptop :(
I’ve seen a lot of people complain about this. But, honestly, I think it’s cool to see two nostalgic and awesome games getting remastered.
I do like some of the design changes they added to the remasters, more vibrant colors for one.
I think the remaster exposes more of the flaws that were in the original as everything is a lot more clear and lit up so nothing is blurred out, which is good as it makes spotting things easier but the blurriness hid ugly textures a lot better. I think the remaster is graphically more impressive it's just that the uglier textures are more noticeable now that everything is much clearer/cleaner
I don't care how it looks, I'm just happy they remastered two of my favorite games. Although I've been hearing there's framerate problems, I hope they fix that.
I like all of them 🤷🏻♂️
It's not like any of it looks 'bad' by any means, and I honestly could care less if it's 30 or 60 fps.
Great games.
I love how you can see the textures of the batsuit's materials
Wow. The leather effect on Catwoman looks really neat. At least here I can actually tell the difference. Most remasters look fairly similar to the original.
The graphics are better in the remaster but the light change to green was a fail. it looses personality without the blue light
Agustín Garcia it's called true color not green it part of detail it brings out the true color as u would see in reality so it's like seeing what Batman looks like and how he blends in with surrounding in the real world
Amazing how a few minor tweaks on shaders can improve the overall visuals. Arkham City is one of the greatest games of all time in my not-so-humble opinion and it certainly deserved a facelift.
Overall if you haven't played these games before or if you don't currently own complete copies of these games then yeah this is probably the best way to play these games as of now, but some things look noticably worse, like they put a generic color filter and upscaled everything without accounting for the smaller artistic nuances, basically it broadly looks better but some shadows and the coloration of objects and such can look undeniably worse
I love the rain effects on Batsy's suit in asylum, everything else is pretty much fine with me
bought return to arkham love it like back in the days, but really feel those 30 frames
***** Agreed and nice, I think catwoman looks pretty good in the remaster. Also remaster penguin looks alot better from his original design imo, but thanks for replying/rating it!
5:32 on Xbox 360 and ps 3 there is nothing behind Gordon till u look really close ur see a crane and in the next gen there is a building likely build it
6:50 - we see Catwoman's elaborate, natural skin texture and realistic lighting in the room, followed by... green swamp soap with a doll's face in the remaster. Adore.
Remaster is better but batman and joker both look a little weird
Broose Wain Actually, Batman looks amazing in Batman: Arkham City! (I've played the full game of Arkham City, I haven't got to Asylum yet.) The Joker is also quite impressive. It looks a lot better when you actually play the game.
Parts of the PS4/Xbox One version do look better, but I prefer the character models of the original
I honestly like the matte version of his suit more than the original but when we talk about the cutscenes, well, after a while you they became somewhat good
Cool video, we’re all of the games filmed on default brightness?
These games looked really good for back then
wow !! excellent comparison, very good quality video congratulations 👌🏻
5:05 & 6:47 The most distracting thing about the remastered edition is the fact that all the green-eyed characters have glowing eyes.
My favourite game series of all time...😊👌
Closely followed by Uncharted and BioShock.
11:50 - We'll bang, Ok? Batman Version
4:26 jim looks like he has just hit that good weed
Even today, there quality differences are so inconsistent. Sometimes the remaster looks on par or better than the originals, and other times they look like much much worse. It reminds me a lot when Resident Evil 4 was released on modern consoles, yeah it looks a bit cleaner and brighter but that in lines the problem. When it's brighter, the lil imperfections in the graphics really show because in the original, they didn't need to put in as much detail because the resolution masks it. The same thing happens here, where the brighter aesthetic not only brings up the graphical shortcomings more, but doesn't do the gothic comic book-y style any favors either.
I admire them trying to bring the past alive and remaster it, just with some areas it’s been done poorly and some it looks really good. The OG’s will always be supreme but I see that they were trying their best to improve it as much as possible but maybe we’ll eventually get a remaster that ACTUALLY compliments the older ones instead of making it look wack but I’m only hoping lol
I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks these remasters are WHACK af. they did Asylum dirty especially.
They need to fix the 30fps cap on ps4 and xbox one
sotheysayy yea I heard virtuous is doing another update to fix the games problems
Thank you very much for this video!!! 👌🏻🔝
Looking back, models were lackluster but environments were spot on. Beautiful.
2:43 tf happened to Batman's lips in the remaster?
Gordon has his face changed completely lol
So many of the character models in the remaster look like they’re compressed files with how their colors are less detailed. They try to be more flashy but it doesn’t work well with the realistic setting they were going for ESPECIALLY against the new color pallet.
It's strange to me, some of the stuff missing on PS3/360 compared to PC. Like the question marks on the walls?
I know it's a bit old by now, but I'm only just getting Return to Arkham in a few days. I can't wait. I've only played the demo of Asylum, and about half of City. Really looking forward to finally properly playing them.
The framerate looks iffy though. It's not 60fps, which I could live with, but it doesn't look as 'smooth' as PS3/360, meaning it's not a steady 30 either.
this is weird there are sections where the remaster is clearly better by a long shot then parts where the original looks better.
That essentially sums up my stance, as well.
The port from unreal engine 3 to 4 radically changes all the lighting so while set pieces and Some models improve, I will admit Batman and Joker take a hit to their model and look more plastic than before
dobe2180 totally agree
Agree Batman and Joker looked better before now they're too colorful and cartoonlike too much color and smered(grammar) out colors, not dark and gloomy enough
dobe2180 yeah there's some shadows that totally get lost that to me make the game look ok better like on joker when his face is in the screen or when the big titan dude first comes.
