My jane magnolia makes me so happy every spring!!! It's so pretty when everything is bare and the jane magnolia blooms on bare stems. It's just so beautiful!!! Looks like a tree of tulips!!! It's definitely in my top 3 in my entire yard. I typically prefer evergreen plants in my zone 7a in oak ridge, TN but with jane magnolia, it's actually BETTER that it's deciduous because of all the flowers on the bare stems. It's just stunning. Especially when most nothing else is flowering. It just really shines!!! Such a perfect tree, highly recommend!!!

That is one of my showstoppers in my garden. I got mine 6 years ago it’s about 10 feet tall and 6 feet wide. One of the most low maintenance Magnolia. I love when a light breeze comes through to catch the scent. Thanks Jim for showcasing Magnolia Jane

I live in Frankfort, Kentucky and I have a Jane Magnolia and its beautiful in the spring. The best part is mine will rebloom some over the summer. Mine is about 13 feet high. The color of the bloom is a deep purple. I'm in zone 6B. Thanks Jim

I agree with carefully selecting deciduous magnolias. Following a suggestion from Bryce Lane, I bought a Magnolia 'Vulcan'. In 20 years I have seen only a few displays of truly magnificent bloom. The other years the tree is full of what looks like wet brown Kleenex. I'm in Raleigh, and this 15 foot disappointment is coming down this spring after I give it one last chance to show its true bloom.

Did you plant yours in the full sun where you live?

      I have two Jane magnolias.
The large one is planted in my woodland garden in the '90.
It was my first plant i planted in that garden.
      It receives part sun.
      The other one..
I planted last year in a large pot.
I will keep that one trim.
It is doing well and it is planted in full. sun.

We have a Leonard Messel and we secretly envy people with Jane in the neighborhood because ours tend to get damaged by late frost while Jane never seems to have that issue in our Zone 5 area (Chicago suburb). We would have gone with Jane if we had known then what we know now. We’re hoping the warmer climate will mean fewer frostbite damage for him unless he wakes up extra earlier because of that and it turns into a never ending loop.

In Illinois 5B/6A, they bloom in May. Sporadic blooming can occur in July and then again in September.

I have one of these. It’s robust. It does like mulch. What time of year do you fertilize yours? I see the buds for the spring flowers are generated in the fall, so I fertilize mine at the end of the summer.

I always like a plant with a people name. Then I have more excuses when I'm out there talking to the plants.

Question..I have one planted in a spot where what you describe would be good for it. It’s been there for several years but only gets like one or two flowers on it and really doesn’t ever grow much. Very sparse and I have to cut back a lot of dead on it in the springs. I mulch and fertilize it every year. I’m in zone 6

Have meant to ask this: Would you consider putting the zone in the title so those of us who are colder than you are do not end of lusting for something we can't have? (Luckily, in this case, these work for more of us.)

Content creators use the thumbnail and title to appeal to the widest audience possible to generate clicks. Putting the zone in the title would go against this strategy. Anyways, many like to see and hear about plants that they may not be able to grow themselves 🙂
