  • Today I show you how to re-seal and rebuild a Saginaw steering box in a 1st gen cummins. These steering boxes are built well and found in many older vehicles. The real issue on these trucks is how they are poorly mounted and how poor the geometry of the steering linkages are as well as the weak frame they are mounted to.

      How'd you replace yours? Grind off the old rivets and put in bolts or weld the bracket?

    • @tomswanson8340
      @tomswanson8340 2 роки тому +1

      @@OvensGarage I didn’t want to grind into the frame so i started by drilling a small hole in the rivet head (not through the entire rivet) and increased the bit size slowly to about the diameter of the rivet and just sheared it off with my chisel and sledge. With some effort, I was then able to punch out the rivets. I watched a bunch of videos and it didn’t seem like there was an easy or best way. I did not weld but but it’s probably not a bad idea.

    Man every time I’m working on my truck you come out with a video on what I’m working on lol. My leaf spring hanger was doing the same not as bad but still moving. Replaced the rivit with bolts and I also welded the brake it to the frame. I also sent my steering box to have it rebuilt and change the valving to make the steering more stiff. I’m not digging the one finger steering. Hopefully that will solve my issue.

    • @OvensGarage
      @OvensGarage  2 роки тому

      We are in sync. haha. How hard was it to replace the rivets with bolts? It didn't look like there was a ton of room for bolts on the top side of that spring perch. I would want to weld that bracket to the frame as well to eliminate any play. The one finger steering is what I want. I love a steering box that's easy to turn. Adjusting that nut on the top of the steering box in a bit will make your steering wheel stiffer to turn. You can try that out. It takes up the slack between the teeth in the gear box.

    • @Jordy40Growing
      @Jordy40Growing 2 роки тому +1

      @@OvensGarage the rivets were pretty easy to get out with a angle grinder and a air hammer. And there is one bolt that is hard to get really tight but it’s doable. I would think bigger tires and the easy one finger steering would be a good thing but from my experience I’m not a fan. So I got a redhead box think it would be better,it was cool for a bit . But then it just seemed different easy again. Maybe with ratio change from the 4.5 turns to the 3.5 turns on the steering wheel change made it to easy. Idk but I’m hoping with the gearbox being re-valved differently it will finally drive like I want it. fingers crossed.

    I usually turn to almost the end of steering travel then adjust the bolt to a good drag. Then when you return to center it loosens up because that is where all the wear is.

      @@OvensGarage opinion also seems kinda mixed in the one finger steering I personally love it and think all vehicles should be like that but it seems some people hate it with a passion and gets reflected in design since for work I drive a Chevy van around and you bought have to use two hands at times. it doesn't look like you worried about how *far in* the shaft from the steering wheel went on the toothed shaft of the gear box. I'm working on my plan to get my 91 back together. what should that shaft to shaft connection look like? there's a flat bit, and a grooved bit on the shaft coming out the box; where does the alan bolt hit?

    • @OvensGarage

      Thanks! No, I didn't lock my steering wheel. I tried to keep it in the same spot but I ended up being off a spline when I went to put the steering shaft back in. It's hard to get the exact spline unless you scribe the shaft before you take it off. I ended up having to pull the steering wheel and skip a spline on the steering column..no big deal! 5 mins of work.
