MAKE AN LED REPLACEMENT SIGNAL METER FOR A FIVER - WORKS WITH ANY RADIO WITH AN ANALOGUE METER.

- One of the biggest problems these days when repairing old radios with analogue meters is that the meters are often open circuit or in some cases not even there, so what can you do? sometimes you simply cant get the right meter or if you can the cost can be more than the radio, so here for about 5 bucks and a few hours is an idea that might help.
If you want to look at the schematic of this idea download the pdf document below.

Amazing work Paul way over my head
Thanks buddy, part 2 should hopefully be interesting as well 👍
An absolutely fantastic idea.
I really liked what you did there and with one of those multi-colour LED's you could make a black mask overlay to fit inside that could then mimic an 80's Hi-Fi level meter where the segments get gradually taller. That would put an alternative retro 80's twist on it! Good work, I hope you do another one soon 👍
Very nice. PDF looks like it took some time as well. Meter looks nice, Red LED on the end would be nicer but as had none, It does what it does. Old school meter with a new added extra. 😀Did a lot with the LM7805. Like you had but 5v. None of this switch mode stuff. Have got a board that gives a USB from a higher input, Think 6.5v or more. Used on the electric bike light output. Bosch system, dear light cable to down in pedal motor assembly, when take of trim to get to cables, sockets. light turn on, as it thought, ran the board and gave USB out to a 5v front light. Always a hack to do what you want. as you did and me with a chinas finest aliexpress job to work a front light on electric mountain bike. Nice to make something.
Nice work Paul, Fantastic to see an old radio saved.
Great little project. I've not used a LM3914 for years - probably about 1981.......
Ha ha same until I did this 😂👍
Not a bad idea at all buddy and pretty simple to boot, thanks for sharing with us👍
No problem 👍
Great concept for the S meter. Looked great! 👍
Thanks! 👍
Great job and it looks good 👍
Yea agree, good job, good idea, works & looks the part👍
Love those little radios, shame about the dodgy caps they used, but at least they can be replaced.
I love it great little project well done
Since the original scale is log, an LM3915 would be more suitable. I have fitted several, now, in past meter repairs and found the devices more than sensitive enough without using any gain board ahead of the display. Having a transparent scale is a boon, but unfortunately, many of the older rigs have aluminum bezels. Good show. 73's.
very nice - next level this is a fantastic project
Many thanks!
great work!
Nice mod, the stickers freshen it up.
Excellent !
Great idea , Whicked cheers shane uk 🇬🇧
Nice Job !
Paul, may I ask what make of capacitors you use when recapping please. I know some are dog rough that are on the market
I use nichicon in mains power situations, Panasonic most everywhere else, those cheap box capacitors can be a bit random, best thing is to test them first, you also have to watch the leads on the cheaper caps as they are often stored incorrectly in high humidity and can be tarnished, I do use the cheap ones in toys and toy walkie talkies, each cap tested and the leads cleaned with a fibreglass brush first, I buy the caps in boxes from RS, they are expensive but worth it.
@@knoxieman Thank you for the information
Hello Paul, thanks for the inspiring project.
I have a question this rf meter is driven by voltage or current?
I am dealing a unrepairable signal meter from fisher fm tuner, on the schematic, it indicated meter is 200uA type.
Will this mod could fit to fisher meter?
Thanks
Cool!
Good project is there difference in adjustment swr due to no needle
You'll always sound good on a Uniden
Would love a set of the silver stickers for my tired old uniden 100. Would you be able to get a set to me please? How do you want to get in contact? Thanks.
Yes I need to mod the design so I can punch the holes in the right place I kind of eyeballed it, I'll do a revision and print some off.
@@knoxieman wicked, I don't know of any messaging system on UA-cam and I'm not happy about putting my email address in the comments but would definitely want a set of decals got my uniden uniace 100. 👍
What caps need changing all of them and how do you know if they are bad ?
Thanks for the reply it helped alot.
There are four caps on this set that always need changing and very often they all need doing, I use a TC1 tester to test the caps.
@@knoxieman Thanks
👌
Can i ask how you do the stickers on the front I have a murphy homebase and thats all it needs?
I use Adobe illustrator for the design and I print using an inkjet printer on to silver self adhesive plastic film, once it's dry I give it 2 X coats of clear laquer which makes them very durable👍
You should make and sell the kits so its even easier you'll make a few quid
