Great lecture, just like to correct a small error. As a Scot myself, I'd like to claim William Thompson for Scotland, and indeed he spent his very long career at Glasgow University. But he was born in Northern Ireland, and lived there until he was about 10 years old. I've been to Belfast, and there is a statue of him in the precincts of Queens University. So - "Scottish born" is not a correct description. His enobled title - Kelvin - comes from a small tributary of the River Clyde which flows through the grounds of Glasgow University, which does indicate that he embraced fully his adopted land. I like to explain to my students the process by which a pretty but otherwise unimpressive Scottish stream helped to name one of the base SI units...
They don't teach in modern day electromagnetism textbooks that Faraday and Maxwell interpreted field as strains on the aether . Nice job by prof Kaiser throwing light on these facts
Really enjoy this course, David Kaiser is incredible online lecturer , captivating...I am sure he has many super powers, one of them is explaining very difficult topics

This video covers the first part of the paper "On Physical Lines of Force", titled "The Theory of Molecular Vortices Applied to Magnetic Phenomena."
To aid in understanding Maxwell's concepts, the video includes additional illustrations and equations.
Great presentation... with much interesting historical context. Thanks!!
I learned a lot. Thank you very much for this video.
We
Scientific institutions independent of universities still exist and do eminent work. (For example, national and world institutes of medicine, pharmaceutical companies, NASA, IAS and the like.) Also, I believe the university system as a whole has done a laudable job taking up the mantle of research and scientific investigation. However, in my opinion, the control that universities have over science has become too strict. The web of universities has a -- let's say, nearly -- monopolistic grip on the process and authority of science (just has it a oversize grip on post-secondary education -- but that's a separate, if related, matter). It seems plausible to me that if societies encouraged other organizations, besides universities, to take on science, there might be interesting and beneficial outcomes. Sometimes, outsider thinking sees connections that bright but otherwise conventional-ish minds cannot.
The world is made out of consciousness, since the world is just the dream of consciousness.

Is the Faraday cage named after him or did he invent it?
Some awesome historical context in here.

Correcting, lines of force is a erroneous term, the correct one is tubes of force, or tubes of induction.
The amazing part is that the old natural philosophers were dealing with someting real, something we can call an object, which is what physics, by the meaning of word, should be doing. Today physicists talks about elusive particles, concepts and impossible things like action at a distance, aka, time space distortion, black holes and etc. What a mess physics did to the understanding of nature.
So, physics today does not deal with anything physical, they prefer to mislead layman person with concepts without any shape or form. This is the actual situation, a dog biting its tail, and a lot of ignorant civils believing nonsense and even attacking the ones who oppose.
Lots of funding going on so, it's not surprise that the formula/paper masturbation is at full blown.
Physics is a religion, you have to beieve in the authority, like a christian believes in the bible and in the priest.
DISINTEGRATED ENERGY. A PRIMARY BASIC FIELD. IS IT DARK MODE PLASMA OR MORE PERTERNATURAL?
