In June 1967, the Beatles were asked to represent Britain in the world's first global satellite TV show, broadcast live to 19 countries and an audience of 700 million viewers. For the occasion, John Lennon (and the other Beatles) very much wanted to deliver a message to the world that was simple enough to be translated into every language in the world. The result was the song "All You Need Is Love."
I know a guy who went to abbey road when they were writing this song and it was going global on the sunday (he went there on Thursday). At this point all they’d written was ‘love love love’. He was having a cigarette outside with Lennon and paul came out and said “john, come on. We’re going live on tv and it’s not even nearly finished” John said “stop worrying. We’ve got a few days yet. I’ll write the rest of it later on” Amazing
The fragment of the Marseillaise at the beginning makes sense in that context, even The Beatles were capable of sticking it to the French! I do believe that the chyron on the screen simply said "Abbey Road Studios, London". Not "UK", not "The Beatles". How cool is that? In among all the footage of trams in South Melbourne and the construction of the Tokyo subway system The Beatles shared with the world a beautiful song that will likely live as long as civilisation survives. It is quite something,
I was 8 years old and wondered why everybody around me were waiting so patiently at the TV when there was no signal. Then, The Beatles are there on the screen playing this song. I had no clue who they were and way too young to appreciate their music. In truth their music was always all around me. Later on, I saw this video and remembered.
The Beatles are the essence and the origin of everything you know about pop and rock music today. Without them ther would be no music scene as we have it today.
I love the early Beatles - the songs I grew up with in the sixties. But I also appreciate their later, heavier stuff as well. One thing about the Beatles - one song never sounds like another - each has a unique sound.
this song debuted on television on the BBC's first international live broadcast worldwide. Hundreds of millions of viewers saw this live on television performed live. It was the first time something like that had been done. The Beatles message was cemented in time.
Some of the vocals were live but the backing track was recorded at Olympic Studio weeks before. Eddie Kramer was the engineer and his account of of the session is amazing. Only a Northern song was recorded that same day.
Of course, Paul and John played it live on the broadcast, persuading a hesitant George to join in. Fearless Ringo was always down for a live performance! The actual video of it is a snapshot of a special time and place in history that should never be forgotten.
@@billythedog-309 That is why the Marseillaise at the beginning is such a good joke. I think only Britain could have done that. If the French had put up France Gall or Serge Gainsbourg (don't worry, they didn't; De Gaulle would have had a fit) and their song had begun with the opening bars of God Save The Queen it would have been seen as a massive diss, but that is, in effect, what The Beatles do here. It is quite cheeky.
Love your reaction! The Beatles made this song on 1967, when the whole peace and love, flower power movement was becoming popular. There's a great video of this song showing The Beatles in the recording studio making this recording. It's a wonderful, festive video: you see the Beatles in there surrounded by an orchestra and lots of friends and colleagues, including Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton, Graham Nash and Keith Moon. I think you've got the meaning pretty well. The lyrics say that we can do anything, there's nothing that can't be done, we can save ourselves and everyone. We are meant to be here right now, we are special. We can do all this if we come together in love. It's exactly what Jesus was preaching all those years ago! Sorry, I'm a deacon, so this is taking me right back to church. I agree, "Here Comes The Sun" would be another wonderful Beatles song to react to! Especially with it being springtime!
I think that is a fascinating aspect of this song, that it was performed in one take, live in front of the entire world, and it came out practically perfectly. There was a mic-knock leading to Paul vocalizing a bit off-script, but besides that, it came out great.
@@yohannbiimu No the backing track was recorded at Olympic studio weeks before. Only some vocals were recorded live and they are different from the album version in parts.
