Sew With Me Simplicity 8641 Part 1 - Steps 1-9

  • Welcome back to my Sewing Studio! Hope you enjoy this Sew With Me with Simplicity Pattern 8641- a Women's Jumper/Dress with Shoulder Straps. Part 1 is Steps 1-9 and be sure to come back for Part 2- Steps 10-25. We'll be sewing Bib View B and Skirt View A/B.
    Fabrics- Cotton types, flannel, lightweight denim, linen or shirting.
    Notions- 9” zipper
    Pattern Pieces you'll need: 1-4 & 7-14.
    Interfacing- pieces 3, 6 & 11
    STEPS:
    STEP 1: Apply Pocket Interfacing (3) to Pocket Facing (2). Stitch Pocket Facing (2) to each side of Front (1), matching small and large dots.
    STEP 2: Understitch Pocket Facing (2).
    STEP 3: For View A- topstitch along pocket.
    STEP 4: Stitch Front Yoke & Pocket (4) to Pocket Facing (2) along the double notched edge.
    STEP 5: On Outside- lap Front (1) over Yoke & Pocket Section (4), matching small and large dots. Baste side and upper edges together.
    STEP 6: Press under ⅝” on the unnotched edge of Band Front (7). Baste Band Front (7) to upper edge of Front (1), matching centers.
    STEP 7: Apply Bib Interfacing (6 or 14) to one Bib (5 or 13) section. The second bib will be used as the facing.
    STEP 8: With right sides together, pin Bib (5 or 13) to Front (1)- over the WRONG side of the band. Match centers and then stitch.
    STEP 9: Press the band, bib and seam out. On the Outside- top stitch band close to pressed edge.
    ** We’re going to skip to Steps 11 & 12 to apply Zipper.
    STEP 11/12/13: Sew on Zipper between Front (1) and Back (10) on Right Side.
    STEP 10: Stitch Back (10) to Front (1) at Left Seam.
    STEP 14: Shoulder Straps- Stitch notched ends of one Shoulder Strap (8) to one Tie End (9) with a ⅜” seam. Fold in half, lengthwise with the right sides together and stitch ⅜” along long edge, leaving end on piece 8 open, and an opening in the middle to turn.
    STEP 15: Turn Straps (8) and Tie Ends (9) right side out and press. Slip stitch opening edges together. On the Outside, top stitch close to finished edges.
    STEP 16: On the outside, baste the the Shoulder Strap ends (on side 8), to upper edge of bib, matching the small and large dots.
    STEP 17: Apply interfacing to Back Facing (11). Stitch Bib Facing (the extra piece of #5 or 13) to Back Facing (11) at Left side seam. Press under ⅝” or surge.
    STEP 18: Open out Right side opening edges of jumper (side with zipper), rolling the zipper teeth away from the opening edge. With Right sides together, pin Facing (extra 5 or 13), to Bid (5 & 13) and upper edge of Back (10), matching centers and Left side seam. Stitch upper and armhole edges.
    STEP 19: Pin Right side opening edges together. Using a zipper foot, stitch ½” from Right side edges, keeping zipper teeth free.
    STEP 20: Turn Facing (extra 5 or 13) and Right side edges to Inside- rolling zipper teeth back in place, and press. Hand baste back facing in place close to pressed edge.
    STEP 21: Folder Carrier (12) in half, lengthwise, with Right sides together. Stitch along long edge in a ⅜” seam.
    STEP 22: Turn Carrier (12) right side out and press. Cut Carrier (12) into 6 pieces, 3” long. Zig-zag or serge raw edges and press under ⅜” on ends of Carriers (12).
    STEP 23: On Outside, pin carriers to back, placing pressed edges ⅛” above and below broken lines and between each set of small dots. Stitch carriers in place close to pressed ends.
    STEP 24: Mark length on lower edge of jumper. Press up hem along bottom and on Right slip opening edges. Try on before hemming!
    STEP 25: After hemming, try on jumper again. Cross straps in back, slipping endings through carriers. Adjust straps to fit at the shoulders, having ends extend evenly at the sides. Tie into a bow in the back.

    Ah the serger. I'm a fairly new user, and it's still a little scary-too easy to destroy fabric and really hard to fix a mistake. But I love it. I would have done the same things with the waistband. Otherwise it would always bother e it wasn't straight. You earned that margarita!

      Well I hope this helps! 😁I used my seam ripper more than I sewed- but I’ve made a ton of notes and hopefully next time it’ll be a LOT faster! 🤣 Also- I got a lot of really good tips of what use/buy on my last FridaySews- to help with turning those straps around. 🤦🏻‍♀️
