Paula Abdul met Janet because she'd done some choreography for the Jackson's and her brothers thought so much of Paula's work and thought she'd work well with Janet and she choreographed 2 videos for Janet. No one can teach someone how to dance, they can show you the steps or choreography but you either have or you don't, just like singing. What's really interesting is that MJ has used many choreographers but no one has ever said any of them choreographers taught him how to dance and Janet's no different!
I wanted to avoid the comparison but: Janet copies her brother's steps and movements ( Michael Jackson) . Her choreography is similar to that of Michael.
It still blows me away how after all this time this choreography continues to stand out among the top routines in hip hop history. Every element throughout the video is to spec, crisp, poised, and on point. Flawless, timeless, iconic.
The Jacksons had such incredible talent. I didnt realize until i was a little older that Rhythm Nation was a song about social injustice, and creating better times.
This album is I feel one of the most under-rated albums of all time. It has hit after hit and no fillers. Now so many years have gone by the social problems the album touches upon are still present and possibly worse. Sad that Janet became the fall girl after the Super Bowel performance. Timberlake was untouched which spooks me. This girl deserves a total second chance at the top pin. No one today could pull off a album like Rhythm Nation. Sadly I rarely ever hear the songs off this album on the radio. If your a young thing it's a must have album to key into.
The album wasn't underrated at the time of its release. But you are right; I would say that now, it has disappeared from hearing pleasure, which is so sad because it is very iconic and the "conscious" songs are very much relevant today. Shame on the music industry for hiding this gem. JERKS!
Really is though, same with Lauryn Hill and the miseducation album....The industry will bury socially aware material in exchange for superficial, corrupt garbage or booty poppin club mixes...
leokimvideo If it's any consolation, I think this song (among Janet's best) is solidly in place among the classics that people still love to hear. When Joseph Gordon-Levitt danced to this on LipSync Battle, it was clear that the audience response to the song was just out-of-control (and props to Joseph for putting in the effort to learn the difficult choreography, although he must have danced to it too when he was still a kid). Bottom line: Janet is still very much a legend, Timberlake is not, and most likely will never be.

Iconic? Perhaps, but it just looks like a knock-off of Michael J's "robotic" staccato choreography, to my eyes anyway. Also, *very* distracting: makes it even _harder_ to try to make out the words she's singing if you're watching all that "twitching" as well! Actually, the whole song looks and feels like MJ, now I come to think of it … I expect I'm not the first person to say that, but this is the first time I've heard this song, or seen this video! But hey: if *you* enjoy it, then great! Just doesn't appeal to me in any way though, sorry.

don’t think the movie version was bad. Stage versions always sound different than a studio-engineered version targeted for heavy rotation on radio and MTV. (See Beauty and the Beast movie version vs. the same studio-produced version in the credits.)
Just saw her and Nelly perform in Philly ( June 2024 ) . The woman is rocking out like it’s the 80s , for someone that is in her 60s she is dancing like time has no control of her. God bless her and here to the youngens who hopefully get to enjoy her music for many years to come.
Fun fact Michael said in an interview that when he wants to relax and/or make up some new dance moves, he would turn on this, or Janet Jackson's The Knowledge and then let it rip! He was so proud of his little sister. 🥰 Their last words to each other were "I love you." 💔❤️🩹
I love how she looked up to Michael as a Big Brother and Mentor. She incorporated alot of his dance moves into this video which made it even more FANTASTIC. Janet was doing her thang in this video.
@@alazjaw.8968 oh most definitely. They both loved eachother very much. I loved that about them. When he passed on I know she was the most affected by it. He lives on through her.
Fun fact: this song about transcending geographic boundaries and breaking divisions and uniting the world………..debuted on the U.S. Hot 100 chart the same week that the Berlin Wall came falling down. Pretty poetic timing.
Do they even make videos anymore?? Lol, I know they do, but don't think they even show them on tv, just youtube. Maybe that's why artists half ass it now cuz they're videos don't even air on BET, MTV, or VH1 anymore, so it's really nothing worth them doing. Plus the Jacksons can't be matched!!
Just in case this got buried in the comment section: this video should have at least a bare minimum of 50 million views considering how culturally significant & gamechanging it was during the close of the '80s.
The reason for such low views is due to the videos being banned in countries until 2016. It says it was uploaded in 2009 but it wasn’t available for viewing in hundreds of countries.
Daniella Karan After the Super Bowl, Janet was blacklisted from the music industry. I don’t know if that has to do with it but this of course wasn’t able to be viewed until recent, in fact most of her videos you watch on UA-cam are reuploads because a lot are still blocked in many countries like “All For You” and the MTV Version of “Love Will Never Do”
Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814, released on September 19, 1989 is a masterpiece, so much that every artist afterwards who tried to duplicate the choreography, vocals and music style never came close to topping it. No album released today comes close. Janet Jackson was and still is in Control.
this is janet's most iconic and memorable music video to date. this video gives you everything: trailblazing fashion, social conscious lyrics, the industrial style sound and bomb ass choreography. "WE ARE A PART OF THE RHYTHM NATION!"
That's why she got the ultimate icon award yesterday at the BET AWARDS. The tribute they did was amazing Ciara did a fantastic job when she danced to this song.
BRAVO!! Well said!! I don’t want anyone of these younger people dismissing GenX anymore. We were WELL aware and always exposing injustice. But we did it together. We did with intelligence, without color lines and without all the WOKE propaganda.
***** she got her own style, she writes her music, she help product it, she can dance, she can sing, she is a entrepreneur, she's a Jackson, she came out of her family spot light and she do a lot more
When this came out I was well into acid house & EBM ( and a bunch of goth & random head music on the side ) - and yet it still takes me half a second to recognise this & still makes me drum tables... good tunes are just good tunes.
The art of music video making reached its peak with this video. There's been a lot of great music videos since, but none have yet been able to top this.
Rhythm Nation was Janet’s best work, hands down. She was such an incredible performer and her dancers were off the hook. I saw her in concert back then and her show was just amazing. I think I memorized every move down pat, lol.
Janet is original, a legend, can actually dance, has actual opinions on social injustice, has actual hit songs which are still remembered and impacted pop culture, doesn't pretend she's always singing live and doesn't steal from other people the whole time like Beyonka.
Why do certain people like to put Janet and Michael against each other?? Come on they are brother and sister! They both inspired each other! Both Michael and Janet supported each other!
+Ariana Slay and they were actually in 2 separate mediums, she was an actress (still is?) and an rnb singer, mike was the "king of pop" enough in its own right
Micahel had originally planned to do this in his own music video, but Janet asked Michael if it was ok that she used the idea of dancing in an "army" style for hers. So that's maybe why so many say that she is trying to be like her brother, because it was something he had planned to use for himself. So it's pretty similar something Michael would have done. Source: Moonwalk by Michael Jackson
The comments on this video are hilarious! Its Michael vs Janet which is insane because they loved each other and never had a jealous bone in their body about each others success. Michael once said that because they were so close, they often thought alike. Both came up with the military style but he let her run with it. There was no permission to give. You can be a Michael fan, w/o being Janet's and vice versa but battling them is ridiculous. Sure he was the King of Pop but don't act like Janet needed him to get where she was/is. Grow up people.
Krissi L Thank you! They were brother and sister for God's sake. People are creating unnecessary conflict between fans who's idols are family. I'm a fan of both, no more than the other. There is no need
@@MindSetToCycle Modern laptops aren't affected, but certain laptops from the mid-2000s have hard drives with disks that can be broken by this song's bassline matching their resonant frequency.
❤️❤️❤️ she would have deserved more! Not all of this nasty press, smashing her reputation because of some simple mistakes or weight problems, which is so human...while her brother turned from a black handsome man into a fragile white women like fantasy figure, nobody really dared to question his transformation. Until today people believe he turned transparent due to vitiligo. I have seen people who really have vitiligo and MJ definitely didn't have it. I'm pretty sure, he would have shown it, instead of hiding. That would have been THE excuse for his changing appearance and I remember well, he didn't hide his health issues, because he "enjoyed", or rather needed the attention. Boy,I still have the paparazzi pictures of an overweight Janet in my head, jogging along the beach, hunted by her personal trainer...I felt so bad for her 🥺
Janet and Michael always highlighted their dancers..and it was always iconic. This video hit the scene and Janet became the ICON she is. She never gets the respect, acknowledgement, and love she deserves. She was what every pop star tried to become after her. She was the full package. I adore her.
Song is fire but I wouldn't necessarily say the message of the song was ahead of it's time because racial injustice has always been prevalent in the US. It has never stopped being an issue since slavery times. It’s just that now we have smartphones to record everything and social media to share everything at a fast rate.
I really want to know why we don't have epic shit like this anymore... WHY??? What's stopping artists being innovative and captivating like in the 80's and 90's? There's literally no superstars and mega groups anymore.
Nester Laziness and easy money. Confidence and trust in skill have been transformed into cockiness and too much bling bling. Buzz and mediaplay have become the perfect tool for people to become famous and youth model (kim kardashian for example) when before you had to master at least one skill to have credibility as an artist and get people recognition
Nester very few people actually want to put in that WORK. I grew up trying to do this video at home and it's pretty damn hard. Even if you get all the moves right, you get winded. Even when I search for people ATTEMPTING to do this choreography, they skip steps to make it easier. I've only seen one dance group get it sort of right and they were really young elementary school kids.
I also remember hearing a radio interview where they said that the soldier idea for the video was originally MJ's idea for Captain Eo. Janet begged him to let her have that idea and the rest is music history.
@@dangusto2596 no I heard the interview as well. They both thought of it at the same time which is why he said they thought so mich alike. Captain eo was in pre production before rhythm nation which is why he said let her have it because they couldn't come out with the same concept as Janet was trying to distinguish herself from him
@@jerryjaguar3239 Oh ok. I vaguely remember the whole interview, but that makes sense. Either way, Janet definitely made a name for herself and impacted an entire generation.
Also, Sadly not so many people know this remix, but in 1997 (on the Blood On The Dance Floor) MJ realesed a Scream remix (flyte tyme), and it's clearly inspired by "Rhythm Nation" ua-cam.com/video/m_i7hg5nQws/v-deo.html
As a sixteen year old girl when Rhythm Nation came out, it was a blast to dance to. Now, at forty-eight, I’m realizing the true beauty of this song. We’re at our best when we stand together. Our different races and ethnicities make the world a more interesting place. They don’t have to come between us.
I know exactly what you mean Dea, I was twenty when it came out. I'm fifty three now and I'll still blown away by how amazing this song and the album truly was. The Legacy that this album left behind is still felt by the people who were affected by it, like us. The lyrics of the songs and the messages she spoke couldn't be more true now as they were back then. 😊
Janet Jackson is about to be inducted into ROCK & ROLL Hall of Fame she has always been and will always be a "Grand Prize" to the millions and millions of fans all over the world. Cheers to Janet Jackson!!!
They keep resetting her views even though she is part of the reason UA-cam was created. The creator felt there should be an online viewing platform to share her little boob incident at the Super bowl. Then Les Noonvies or whatever his name black balled her from all media exposure...including YT.

don’t think the movie version was bad. Stage versions always sound different than a studio-engineered version targeted for heavy rotation on radio and MTV. (See Beauty and the Beast movie version vs. the same studio-produced version in the credits.)

Janet and Michael always nailed the large group choreographic videos.

The dancers are phenomenal !!!!!!
Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814, released on September 19, 1989 is a masterpiece, so much that every artist afterwards who tried to duplicate the choreography, vocals and music style never came close to topping it. No album released today comes close. Janet Jackson was and still is in Control.
I wanted to add that this song breaks the hard drives

+Jack Sell Are you saying Janet can't sing?
Janet is original, a legend, can actually dance, has actual opinions on social injustice, has actual hit songs which are still remembered and impacted pop culture, doesn't pretend she's always singing live and doesn't steal from other people the whole time like Beyonka.
Both are good.
Janet = Perfection ❤
Why do certain people like to put Janet and Michael against each other?? Come on they are brother and sister! They both inspired each other! Both Michael and Janet supported each other!
Right
+Ariana Slay and they were actually in 2 separate mediums, she was an actress (still is?) and an rnb singer, mike was the "king of pop" enough in its own right
Micahel had originally planned to do this in his own music video, but Janet asked Michael if it was ok that she used the idea of dancing in an "army" style for hers. So that's maybe why so many say that she is trying to be like her brother, because it was something he had planned to use for himself. So it's pretty similar something Michael would have done. Source: Moonwalk by Michael Jackson
Right i mean they pretty much was the same both legends actors.. siblings. .. they were and still is the definition on r&b and pop..just music period
Back when he was alive
The comments on this video are hilarious! Its Michael vs Janet which is insane because they loved each other and never had a jealous bone in their body about each others success. Michael once said that because they were so close, they often thought alike. Both came up with the military style but he let her run with it. There was no permission to give. You can be a Michael fan, w/o being Janet's and vice versa but battling them is ridiculous. Sure he was the King of Pop but don't act like Janet needed him to get where she was/is. Grow up people.
So agree with you..
Krissi L Thank you! They were brother and sister for God's sake. People are creating unnecessary conflict between fans who's idols are family. I'm a fan of both, no more than the other. There is no need

It still is fresh
This song is more relevant now than ever...Everyone needs to listen to the lyrics...Janet was way ahead of her time on this one..
Song is fire but I wouldn't necessarily say the message of the song was ahead of it's time because racial injustice has always been prevalent in the US. It has never stopped being an issue since slavery times. It’s just that now we have smartphones to record everything and social media to share everything at a fast rate.
For sure. Not ahead but always relevant. It should have a come back. I wish I could blast it at a protest
ahead of her time? racism was way worse back in the 90s...
Nothing these days come close to this incredible standard.
This was a revolutionary song!! This was probably ahead of it's time. It sure is relevant to today's society! I love me some Janet!
My mother did this in a talented show back in 2017 and won first place. Need to mind you she's 45 and moves like she's 25.
🤣❤❤I bet she killed that shit too. That's what's up!!
Your mom sounds so fucking cool
I bet ur mother left NO CRUMBS!!!!
Jason Well we had "This is America" this year, I hope it will inspire other artists to do similar stuff

Lack of creativity and passion for music.
Helplessly addicted to that bassline, I really can't think of a better bass part in any other song anywhere. Just perfect.
fun fact: in Michael's home movie, he said rhythm nation was his fav Janet song to dance to!!!!!
I also remember hearing a radio interview where they said that the soldier idea for the video was originally MJ's idea for Captain Eo. Janet begged him to let her have that idea and the rest is music history.
thats cool.
