  • This cockpit recording from an RF-4C aircraft captures the harrowing moment when their wingman, Dodge 2, is struck by an SA-2 Guideline missile. Dodge 2, piloted by Captain Roger Ernest Behnfeldt and with Captain Tamotsu Shingaki as the Weapons Systems Officer (WSO), was flying reconnaissance near Bac Giang, North Vietnam. Tail number 69-0355 went down approximately 8 miles northeast of Bac Giang during operations coinciding with the Vietnam Ceasefire, while serving under the 14th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron of the 432nd Tactical Fighter Wing based at Udorn RTAFB, Thailand.
Captain Shingaki was captured by the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) but was later released on March 29, 1973. Captain Behnfeldt was initially declared Missing in Action (MIA) and his status remained unresolved for 15 years until his remains were recovered in 1987. This incident underscores the perilous nature of reconnaissance missions during the Vietnam War and the sacrifices made by military personnel in the line of duty.

Guys went uninvited overseas to kill people on their own land and there's much ado that people self-defended themselves.

Your russian to english transcription is almost excellent, but I don't believe I've heard "self-defended themselves" before. Keep stabbing away at democracy dude.

The South Vietnamese asked for the assistance of the USA to repel the aggression of North Vietnamese who were intent upon invasion. USA military assistance goes back to 1950’s, but was increased in the 1960s when China and Russia began overtly supporting North Vietnamese with supply of weapons to use against the weaker South Vietnam. To say the USA was not invited to help defend South Vietnam, is breathtakingly ignorant. Communism was spreading by aggression throughout SE Asia , and the fear was, for those who were alive during the 1960s, that Communism would spread throughout that region of the world an$ posed a direct threat to democratic nations, and world trade routes. Some of the comments here are from people who blindly follow the mantra of juvenile activists who couldn’t point to South East Asia on a map, let alone where South Vietnam used to be. Some of you could actually try reading historical documents and literature, instead of ingesting the idiotic tripe of contributors who have never read a history book in their lives.
