Long or short...your videos are never dull! I appreciate the videography and especially your clean, clear sound recording. Your elocution is flawless, too! I can listen at twice the speed if I'm in a hurry, and your voice and speech are perfectly intelligible. Being an old retired guy, though...I'm rarely in a hurry. Mahalo for the years of high quality automotive entertainment!
I'm a true fan of yours, Tom. Longer or shorter ... I will still watch the entire video. You and Martin are a great team. We appreciate what you do for us.
Your reviews are one of the most real world and honest. No one is tracking their Mazda 3 or even their BMW X6 so why be flooring the gas and slamming the brakes between lights. People drive to the limits ( so the police can let them continue to drive) and only once in a while test the limits. Comfort, noise level, features you cover the real world wants. Cheers!
Shorter videos are fine. It made sense for the red/green light segment when the videos were longer. I actually got the Mazda3 Preferred FWD in red. I like most of the features of the Carbon turbo just not the color.
Yeah, I love most small Mazdas, but whatever the marketers call this color, it’s still tan. It’s fine, I guess, but a distinctive car deserves a distinctive color.
Nice car in its 7th year, I have a 2020 and absolutely love it! Btw I know someone who works closely with a Mazda supplier and told me this will be the last 3.
Always well done, the previous takes with red light green light were absolutely fine too, these are always engaging and interesting look forward ot them every week!!!!!!!!!
Great job Tom and Martin. Good decision to keep reviews short and sweet. Under 13 minutes increases the likelihood of viewers like me watching the entire video.
Ahh it’s nice you came to my viewpoint on Red light Green light after all. Nice review Tom. Only thing missing was to point out that the Big Three(ha,ha) abandoned the sedan market in favor of trucks and SUV’s.
I kinda like red light - green light as a recap/summary. You could probably trim it to a sentence or two that incorporates the headline pros and cons in a "Home Straightaway" segment or something like that in keeping with the automotive theme. In any case, always appreciate your work Tom. You're awesome!
First YT of yours I watched several years ago was the Chevy Trax 2015 and made me a subscriber. Your pieces are always well done but rarely feel bloated. The videos I tend to skip are those for cars with extremely high prices. Have always enjoyed your 'road trip' adventures. Keep up the good work but remember even the most top tier reviewer can't make any pure EV seem exciting.
Gotta say the 3 is a beautiful car, inside and out, that has aged very well. I’ve had my 3 sedan for almost 6 mos now, my first Mazda, and it’s truly a pleasure to drive! Great review! Thanks for posting! ✌🏻👍🏻✌🏻
I'm with those that say either way way, your reviews are great..... I do have to say that the red light green light stuff is actually pretty informative!
This is definitely a better format, shorter and to the point. Green light / red light was just a TLDR for those who did now care to watch a video itself. It was not your trademark feature. If anything was and is your trademark feature is "show not tell" with "this...", "this..." and "this...". As for the car, I like it, a stylish compact sedan with AWD and real instruments.
I'm in the camp that liked red light/green light. Maybe a shortened version? I could definitely tell the pace was quicker this time around. Concur with many others....I really like the photography and the format. Top quality work.
I really enjoy the semaphore segment, but I understand your decision to trim the videos which, by the way, I would never think of as being too long or bloated. Anyway, your channel has some of the best automotive content on youtube, thank you from bringing knowledge and fun to your viewers!
well done! quite a tempting vehicle. always enjoy your reviews...been watching a lot of motormouth lately, your neighbours north of the border but no one takes a backseat to Tom unless it's Tom ha. keep em coming
Bring back the green light, red light feature. That's your trademark including the TP trunk test. That's why I love your show plus your shooting location is beautiful.
Like many viewers I enjoy the red light/green light portion as well as the bit of trivia. They are always at the end, so easy to skip for the impatient folks. I sometimes did that myself for cars I wasn't really interested in.
Good reviews, I do like them shorter. A car review that goes on for 25-30 minutes start to lose me. I took a technica) writing class in college (50 plus years ago) & I've never forgot my papers coming back with red marks over extra words. Same should apply with video.
For the record, I do like your 25 minute videos lol. Maybe do two types of reviews? one at about 12 minutes and then in-depth reviews for totally new models or special vehicles. Or break the reviews into two parts: general and deep-dive? Love what you do, short or long!
Great video, always enjoy your content! Ps it might just be on my end, however the thumbnail for this video was the grey sad face YT uses. Just thought I would let you know.
Hey guys, What's up? Thank you for great car review. As always. I hope you & your loved ones are all happy & healthy. P.S. Tom, stop spilling coffee. (SMH)
I think Red Light / Green Light served to make these videos more efficient. If someone’s looking to gather information about a segment like this one, for example, it would take a long time to just find and watch 15 minute videos about each. If you know you like Tom’s point of view, though, you can skip to the Red Light / Green Light section to determine if the car ought to be short-listed. Then if you have short-listed two or three models, I think the longer format is great! Any new or late-model used car costs tens of thousands of dollars. I want insights before pulling the trigger. Every little capsule review will tell you the Mazda has snappy handling but isn’t real quiet. That’s Red light / Green light stuff; assuming that’s fine, I want to know more.
Agree about the enthusiasts who would like a manual option with the turbo trims. If I could shift my own gears and get ventilated seats, this would absolutely be the sports sedan I would choose………. Sadly the discontinued Mazda 6 had all of these things 😢
Tom, eliminate the Red Light / Green Light if you must, but if you do, promise to replace them with a Stop Sign / Yield Sign? 😂 Mr Martin Campbell, you are the best!! Thanks for all that you do 👍
On my second mazda 3 turbo premium. I wished it was available with a manual, but the automatic is smooth shifting and responds quickly. Not the most economical with fuel, but I still prefer it over my 2018 civic because of the premium feeling of the interior. The hatchback trunk is smaller because of the plastic and sound deadening on the sides.
Tom, as nice as the exterior color is, do you think Mazda could have added at least 2 more colors to the car? The interior is fine, but a nice Mazda metallic blue 🔵 or deep gray would add depth to the Carbon trim. Shoot, even a simple red 🔴 would help brighten up the showroom/lot. Single color trims are a tough sell. Even Honda gave their manual Accord Coupes 3 colors to choose from (black, silver, red) IIRC. I still miss the 3rd pedal. This carbon turbo trim would be a great GLI or SI killer if Mazda put their "Zoom-Zoom" or "Soul of a sportscar" mantra behind it.
The armchair product planner in me understands the cost savings of simplifying offerings (it can be a lot). The Mazda fan in me wants Soul Red Crystal paint. The manual is probably not up to handle the torque of the turbo, so there's that.
I'm drive a mild hybrid 1.5a Fwd. In singapore we can't drive fast. But the looks of this madza is very good to look at. Is a car u may turn around a few times to look at it.
Tom, I’m puzzled by the floor hump in the backseat. Isn’t this car AWD “on demand” via a distinct motor driving the rear wheels? So no drive line to a rear axle? Why a big hump then?
Great value and I wish more manufacturers would do this. However, paint is notoriously thin and the rear beam suspension seems to be glossed over in this review for some reason?
Very nice looking car, I have always liked Mazda. But my first though when I saw it was, Dodge Dart. Not a bad thing as I thought the Dart was a nice design.

thats impressive. 320 trq feels really good on the road. I dont think u can compare the civic Si with this car really. The power diff in trq is to big... Id compare it to the GTI, BMW 228i, Audi A4.. Also the interior also competes with those cars as well
AWD seems like a cost-added, problem/maintenance-added waste for this type of vehicle IMO. Otherwise, great vehicle (minus that awful paint color) if you know how to properly maintain & drive/treat a turbo engine compared to a regular naturally-aspirated engine. They require special care/treatment if you expect them to last a long time.
I want a clutch. I have the turbo engine and AWD in my C-50, and it’s fine; I’m assuming this car is lighter. First time I haven’t owned at least one manual in quite some time; I had my first in 1972.
Too bad about the Lights, I though they served as an excellent on-point Objective/Subjective summary, but then again that was when the video's ran a little longer. DO NOT drop Fun Facts however, that. I always thought, was a huge part of Driven's brand and differentiation in my opinion.
Your videos are still well made so whatever changes you think are good, I will go with. With one exception: Eliminating your twin for the rear seat is an unforgivable travesty.

I appreciated how XM had basically become ubiquitous, so I find it annoying that some automakers are now relegating it to top trims. I like not needing my phone or its data to listen to what I want. I realize that all cars are more expensive, but I still find it difficult to accept that this car has a price well into the 30s, even without the top option package. It's nice, but oof! A manual would make it more appealing. For me, 11-to-12 minutes is a sweet spot for video length. If it's much longer, it often ends up in "watch later" and sometimes never gets watched. I don’t miss red light, green light at all. I am, however, concerned over the whereabouts of evil twin. He might be evil, but I still hope he’s okay.

Glad to see Tom do a mainstream vehicle that's not a Kia/Hyundai. I think Tom's channel could improve views with more reviews like this. I don't think he has gotten around to doing a Cx-50, but lost track at how many Kona's he's done. Wish he would push for fewer top of the spec trims. He did both the top level GMC Canyon and Chevy Colorado which seemed like a huge miss not to have done at least one with a more mainstream trim level.
Reviewers don’t get any choice about the options or trim levels on the cars they’re reviewing. The manufacturer almost always fill their press fleet with top spec models to show off the vehicle’s features.
Put this up against a Corolla and there's a big difference in driving dynamics and interior materials. As a designer/student you should know good marketing is backing up the claims that are made.
Such a good looking sedan. Agreed, this 3 is crying for a 6 spd manual. Great review!
