as long as we're talking about it, "kouhai" is the opposite, for someone whom you are more experienced than, but it's not something you would say as readily unless there's a genuine hierarchical structure in which you are above someone. like, you wouldn't call someone "kouhai" just because they're younger than you, but might if you're their upperclassman or their senior at work
Yes, kouhai probably is used to refer someone like when you're introducing someone who is your junior

To out it into romance anime logic, if you call the person your talking to Senpai, their your crush.
Me, some guy that has completely lost track of how many thousands of volumes of manga he's read: "And kohai means someone with less experience, but people rarely call anyone that because while it is customary to call those above you by a title (older siblings, seniors, etc) even in casual conversation, those below are usually just called by name (with honorific) if known."
Ian weren’t you in Deadpool and Wolverine 😂
Meanwhile...
American dude: Notice me senpai
Japanese woman: What am I more experienced at than you?
American dude mind: What? No, I’m saying your my crush.
Nice one

When I was young I used to think that "senpai" means crush. I managed to convince my class at that time and now I'm older I find it kinda funny.
Omfg, there are actually people who thinks "Senpai" means "the love of their life" ?! 😶
Edit: (will someone even read this tho...)
for those who thinks that I'm just reacting like this to not look dumb or to appear more "well-informed". NO.
I tried to study japanese before I could comprehend what they are speaking, and when I say speak, I mean verbal not the language itself. It was gibberish for me at first but as I learn phrases, I started catching up some words they are saying.
Also a note that about a decade ago (which is how long i've been into anime) senpai weren't use heavily to call the love interest of the character, which if you watch various anime genre, you'll eventually realize what the word actually means. It is just recently that the word is being used more often to romance anime which causes misunderstanding to viewers especially those who watch anime but only on romance genre.
Edit 2: Just because I have a "kawaii loli uwu" pfp, it doesn't mean that I am a recent and a bandwagonner type. I started with soul eater and am a huge fan of Code Geass
It takes under a minute for someone to Google what the title-suffixes mean in Japanese and yet here we are 🥲
@@MadeOfConfusion its not like they are gonna google it if they have context clues are u dumb, just a misunderstanding
Yup and I met those type of people online, they’re weeb and I keep correcting them that it doesn’t mean crush so they tried to correct me saying that it does mean crush. I find it hilarious
@@MadeOfConfusion yup, it was cringe cause one of the girl called her crush senpai even though he’s the same age as her
Actually no
I already knew, as my lower class peers called me that, and I had to google it... but always happy to see an Ian vid!
