    • @Ningyoutachi

Now that I think about it, I wonder why that is?
It's the same with "Onii' or "Onee" and "Imouto" or "Otouto". Like you'd call your big sister "Onee-san", but you don't call your little sister "Imouto-san" when you're speaking to her.

It's also the case for people to be draw to people they think are like the top. So normally the smartest kid, the best sports player, etc.

Just paying attention to the connotations when the word is used is enough. Most subtitles even directly translate it to upperclassman which is basically someone with more experience.
This likely applies to all words in all languages, but I’m not gonna assume all of them are the same in this regard.

Omfg, there are actually people who thinks "Senpai" means "the love of their life" ?! 😶
Edit: (will someone even read this tho...)
for those who thinks that I'm just reacting like this to not look dumb or to appear more "well-informed". NO.
I tried to study japanese before I could comprehend what they are speaking, and when I say speak, I mean verbal not the language itself. It was gibberish for me at first but as I learn phrases, I started catching up some words they are saying.
Also a note that about a decade ago (which is how long i've been into anime) senpai weren't use heavily to call the love interest of the character, which if you watch various anime genre, you'll eventually realize what the word actually means. It is just recently that the word is being used more often to romance anime which causes misunderstanding to viewers especially those who watch anime but only on romance genre.
Edit 2: Just because I have a "kawaii loli uwu" pfp, it doesn't mean that I am a recent and a bandwagonner type. I started with soul eater and am a huge fan of Code Geass
