My main man for Zappa reactions! That’s the GREAT George Duke killing it on the keys. Frank’s secret weapon during the early ‘70s. George’s solo albums are funky as hell. Well worth checking out.
I love that you do so much Zappa. I’ve requested him many other reaction channels, only to be ignored. I’m not going to bother anymore. I’ll just come here and hear what I want to hear. Thanks.
Top 5 Zappa tune, one of the all time killer riffs and a big shout out to Ainsley Dunbar on the drums, not a jazz drummer but a rock drummer playing Jazz and doing a hell of a job, one of Frank's best albums. Blessed Relief off the same album is absolutely beautiful and should be listened to. Always recommend Eat this Question to people who hadn't heard much Zappa.
Props to whoever requested this. What a kick ass tune. Frank formed The Grand Wazoo following being attacked while playing on stage. He was hurt so badly that he couldn’t tour so he formed a rock/jazz band and wrote this album. There was no keeping this man down.
@Zolar Czakl very true Zolar. My apologies for being lazy and thank you for filling in. I’ve been trying to give Frank the credit he deserves for 35 years, but we all know how that goes. I’m happy that Teez is open to this because every little bit helps.
I appreciate you liking my request Thomas. Like you and Zolar, I'm a long time fan, saw him many times, and was thrilled when Dweezil took the music back on the road. I have been responsible for several of these Zappa reactions, and there are a couple of others feeding him too. He's done quite a few so far and I try to pick and choose from all over his career, from the original trouble every day to watermelon in Easter hay. I hope you like my next request...feel free to join in...
@@GoodCorporateRobot unfortunately Mr Teez has become rather popular with guys like me who are happy to drop a five spot on him with a request, and I think he is buried in them. When I found him a month ago he was able to do 'gifted' requests in a day or so, eat that question took five days, which tells me how many are doing the same. Just an FYI. I am about to request my next one, probably won't see it go up until next week. I have noticed that his most viewed requests are the FZ and Beastie Boy clips, never thought I would see those two in the same sentence. I consider Teez a good investment in my 50 year quest to share Frank's music with anyone I can get to listen to it!
Aw Teez. Man, I love you for this. One of my favorite songs, and an incredible piece of music. The genius of Zappa was that every note of this song existed in his head before he ever put pen to paper. He knew exactly how this was going to sound and had the crew of musicians on board that could deliver the goods. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Teez! I appreciate all the requests you have done for me, it's nice to share my love for this thoroughly unique icon of rock history. Already pondering what the next one will be, maybe a humorous interlude, one of his more comical endeavors. Talk to you soon friend...
My dad had this CD along with a bunch of other Zappa albums, and I remember being 8 years old and skipping to this song specifically. I would just have it repeat for hours and would read the album liner notes, it painted such an amazing world that went right along with the cover art and music. Definitely had a long lasting impact on my music tastes.
So what you're hearing is actually a standard 4/4 time sig but the rhythm section (keys, bass, drums) is very good at playing around with the groove, turning it inside out, going back and forth between cut and double time...techniques used primarily by jazz musicians. Its a fun way of jamming if you have guys who know what they're doing.
That opening tone of the Fender Rhodes key board is freaken sick, maaaaan. Just before covid i was hosting a local jam session as house drummer, one guy playing bass knew i was a zappa freak so he comes up on stage and just rips straight into this riff, over and over till the brass section caught on, they had no idea it was Zappa but figured out an accompanyment thing the audience went mad for it too, damn, i cant wait to get back on stage, thanks for the awesome reaction bro.. Cheers all, Zapp forever
Controlled chaos with some genius on the side...I do believe in this piece the drums and everything else are exactly calculated...FZ would leave 'windows' for solos...but the basic structure of most of his pieces, was rock solid...Wowie Zowie...Thanks!!
I love that right after the free form drum part, there's the tightest, most precisely arranged drum part on the outro. Zappa used the extremes in all aspects of composing in a really smart, surprisingly balanced way.
Fun fact: George Duke's keyboard intro is doubled on Fender Rhodes (what you were hearing on Don't Let Me Down) and a Wurlitzer 200A, panned hard left and right.
He did this and a couple other albums when he was in a wheelchair recovering from an accident. This was his big band/jazz era. He didn't really have a band at this time, so he hired a lot of various studio musicians. For this song, except for Dunbar and Duke, the others were new hires. And he changed up the personnel on each song on the album. He probably used over 30 musicians. Mike Altschul - woodwind George Duke - keyboards Aynsley Dunbar - drums Erroneous (Alex Dmochowski) - bass Sal Marquez - "multiple toots" (brass) Joel Peskin - woodwind
GRAND WAZOO is insane... 2 different songs played at the same time and at war with each-other. Just like the front cover of the album suggest. In the end, only one style of music wins... it's Zappa against the world... In your own words, it is controlled Chaos.
I love the Grand Wazoo album cover. Amazon has a puzzle of it; when you are done you can frame it and put it on the wall. It's on my things to buy list!
I was 19 and it was a deal that I liked Zappa. My aunt said "Eat that Question". I had no clue what she meant. My next cd purchas was this. Soooooo sick.
I have always described Zappa as controlled chaos & organized madness from the mind of a real musical genius. Those who understand this description are the ones who get Zappa.
You might Consider Reacting to Dweezil Zappa Live....... 🎸🎸🎸🎸ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA...... Father Frank is looking down Proudly on his Son Dweezil...🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼
i think this may have been composed during the time zappa was recovering from being pushed off stage by a crazed fan. he fell pretty far down, it crushed his larynx (lowering zappa's vocal range deeper I believe - someone correct me if I'm wrong) along with things like head trauma, fractures and forcing him into a wheel chair for a while. Why did the fan push him off stage? I think it's cuz the fan was on acid and thought that Zappa was like trying to hit on his girl during the performance. Overall, a pretty cool album, though not my favourite. You've really got to do a listen to all of Joe's Garage and Sheik Yerbouti. I'd love to recommend a song though, I think you'd enjoy it: Hot Plate Heaven at the Green Hotel. Absolute banger. It's from the live album Cheap Thrills which is also very good.
@Teez I've listened to about 5 of your Zappa reaction videos now, and in my mind this is the best in that it breaks down the song, talks about it's elements, the instruments, the tempo, some of the structure. The first reaction video of yours that I listened to (Inca Roads) you didn't have much to say. Is it perhaps that it was an earlier Zappa listen to you and it was just too dense (not an uncommon reaction that's for sure), and now you are becoming more familiar with Zappa and can comprehend it a little bit more? Anyway good job on this video and thanks for the additional thoughts. Keep it up!
And I highly doubt the drums were freestyled on this song. Zappa probably wrote every single note from all the instruments on the album. Musicians had more chances to freestyle during live performances when the lead guitar would go into a solo.
Now that you've heard the original, I would love to see your reaction to his son Dweezil's band, Zappa Plays Zappa, but in this version we get a 7 minute sax solo by the amazing Scheila Gonzales. Will blow your mind. ua-cam.com/video/fpeHoPc-MFk/v-deo.html

In the same boat.
There are even prog centric reaction channels that have ignored Zappa requests.
"it sounded expensive"
thats actually an amazing description

That riff when done live and has a horn section backing the guitar, just perfection.

Thank again for going down this rabbit hole, I'm really enjoying it and watching your reactions, please don't stop,

Hell yeah. We all did!
I love the end with the military marching band drumming and the warning siren via the synth

The Grand Wazoo may be the most perfect album, ever.
hey what a good definition for zappa´s composition in general, "controlled chaos".
GRAND WAZOO is insane... 2 different songs played at the same time and at war with each-other. Just like the front cover of the album suggest. In the end, only one style of music wins... it's Zappa against the world... In your own words, it is controlled Chaos.

Thanks Teez this is one of my favorite zappa compositions
Grand Wazoo is an amazing album from start to finish.. one of Frank's greatest creative periods, and probably his greatest line up of band members
Beautiful song.
Teez McGee, Zappa's "Baby Snakes" is 1.49 minutes, if you want to do a very short video. It's funky and weird, and you can kind of "dance" to it, lol.
Active Listening is what is inspired by Zappa.
Possibly my favourite Zappa album. Good choice
i leave, i deposit my gratitude everywhere Zappa is listened, reacted or enjoyed.
I was 19 and it was a deal that I liked Zappa. My aunt said "Eat that Question". I had no clue what she meant. My next cd purchas was this. Soooooo sick.
It's like sometimes he gives them so many measures to do what ever before they all come back together
Exhaustive drumming!!!!!😳
It's THAT beautiful...

Controlled Chaos or Organized Confusion.
Isn't that Alex Dmochowski playing Bass?
Later to be part of the Dunbar Retaliation Band.
Flourish, Crescendo.
Epic.

I recommend a Zappa song called "Broken Hearts Are For Assholes".
yeaaaah

Yippee!
its funny he had an album called Jazz from Hell..

I dont like the old stuff so much....
