- E.T. is a 31-year-old Pacific walrus at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium in Tacoma, Washington.
He weighs over 3,400 lbs and is one of only 17 walruses in U.S. zoos and aquariums. E.T. came to the Zoo as an orphan from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska.
E.T. is named for his wrinkled resemblance to alien in the popular 1982 movie "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial."

My son and I visited ET one cool drizzly day around 2002. We went to a small observing area outside looking over the tank where we could watch alone. My son was around 4 and ET came leaping playfully onto the ledge below us (almost close enough to touch) and began vocalizing VERY loudly to my son. It was very intense - he was MASSIVE, but neither of us were scared because he was obviously in a playful mood and being friendly. We were very honored that he chose us to pay special attention to. One of our best memories that we talk about to this day.

They do sound pretty scary. In fact, Walrus sounds were some of the vocal effects used for the signature screams of Jurassic Park's Velociraptors, along with the shrieks of dolphins.

This is truly amazing. I never imagined a Walrus displaying intelligence in this manner. Maybe we would view and treat animals differently, if we weren't the only species on earth that has the trifecta of hands, the capacity to easily make a very large array of very different sounds and intellect.

We are not 'the only species on earth' Birds and whales have a much wider range of vocalisation than we are capable of and Primates have hands with opposable thumbs as well.
Intellect is the only thing we are vastly superior tho.

Also, regarding intellect, humans are not superior in every way regarding the brain. Chimps, for example, have better spatial memory than humans have (which is very important for memorizing their surrounding jungle environment), and chimpsalso do better with how many digits in a sequence they can remember (i.e. numbers on a keypad are lit up in a random sequence, and they need to repeat the sequence by pressing the sequential keys correctly afterwards).
Whales have a larger percentage of their brains devoted to empathy than humans do. They are very emotional creatures, so it is extra heart breaking that they are still being hunted.

We have many friends who still live there, though, so if you could get your act together and think about ANY other species than just yourselves for at least FIVE minutes that’d be great.
