- From an old VHS. The extraordinary story of how in 1914 the self-taught maths genius SRINIVASA RAMANUJAN was brought from Madras to Trinity College, Cambridge, by the great English pure mathematician GH Hardy, who called their relationship 'the one truly romantic episode of my life'. A 1987 documentary for the Channel 4 'Equinox' science series. Directed by Christopher Sykes. Executive Producer Karl Sabbagh.

While being proud of Ramanujan, at the same time I admire the sense of sincerity, ethics and value of Prof. Hardy. He could have tossed the letter from the math genius and never looked at it. He did not feel even once to steal his ideas and publish them as his own. The world has to thank both him and Ramanujan for having come across each other. But for Prof Hardy, we would probably not heard of the genius who knew infinity.
Absolutely agree! I see the beauty of how two worlds can compliment each other :-) !
While this is the story of the extraordinary genius Ramanujan, it is Prof Hardy's role that touches the soul.
a honest and pure quest for the truth is blind to such prejudices
+healingvoicepdx Somehow, my friend, Prof. Hardy was destined to be a part of the course that Ramanujan was born for. Everything has a purpose and roles are pre-designated. The way you perform is left solely at your discretion.
+healingvoicepdx Well, Hardy seems was interested more for the development of his field than let his ego get between what he loved (maths) and this weird genius or crazy person from India. Perhaps it was also that he was at an age when most mathematicians lose their game, so he saw this promising young man and thought "oh my God, this is a goldmine of mathematical knowledge I must save !!!". And he did.
Not everyone would have done so for many reasons, even today, so Ramanujan was extremely lucky that Hardy was there at the right time.

The award-winning Indian director Gnana Rajasekaran and a 35-man film crew are in fact hard at work right now on location in Cambridge shooting the story of Ramanujan's life, in Tamil and in English, for international cinema distribution.
The man who knew infinity
I am an artist, but the story of Ramanujan is an inspiration to me. His inner world of mathematics is astonishing and his life story is heart-breaking.
I'm physics and I really agree with you, his inner world is to me overwhelming and incredible, he was the greatest genius of mathematics in the world for me because he intuited many theorems even though he created his own notation to understand his mathematics thoughts
drunichs To accomplish what Ramanujan did requires complete devotion and faith. Very few people have such curses or blessings.
He was great.. Genius but he couldn't balance his life.. Emotions health.. Anything extreme eccentric is hazardous.. .great personality.
That was nineteenth century. We can understand how difficult it was for Ramanujam in those days
You are an artist so only person like you can value this divine soul
This documentary should be shown in schools n Universities all over the world

Srinivasa Ramanujan was truly an enigma.... he still is..... the greatest Indian genius who walked the earth....
@Vishwadev Do can i give that medal to Tamil Nadu only That Mr.CDS Bipin Rawat ji died in Tamil Nadu ,Rajiv Gandhi was killed by southies in Tamil Nadu .
Ramanujan was an Indian (Single Citizenship)
@Vishwadev Im from India , ,culture +linguistic lives in state ,
@Vishwadev All of us are Indians..... I am a Bengali but more importantly I am Indian.... India is bigger than any local identity we have..... I am curious what prompted u to make this comment....
@Vishwadev Tamilians have some basic misconceptions.... Firstly they still believe the British lie of the Dravidian and Aryan divide....which has long been disproven by dna....all Indians share same genetic markers.... Any mixing happened approx 60k yrs ago....Secondly they believe Tamil is source of other dravidian languages, when in reality it originated from a proto language parent to other branches such as Telugu.... Don't try to portray yourself separate from India...we are all helplessly Indians.....

From the website of Trinity College, Cambridge:
To commemorate the connection between the renowned Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan and Trinity College, the College hopes to award each year a Ramanujan Research Studentship in the broad field of Pure or Applied Mathematics to an applicant from India hoping to do research for the PhD degree in Cambridge.
I believe there is also now a bust of Ramanujan at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences in Cambridge.
If I multiply 111, sequence length upto 30digits with itself, and with7twice why do I get 1728 and 1729 in my sum. Is it Both or nothing seen by both Hardy and Ramanujam in the world of utilitarian ideas that are separate from the ideas alone. In other words to put it slightly better, that matter alone existed before multiplication and not ideas, for example cube, the least could be a1000.,and a man of 100 ideas could have done the trial run in order to become aware of the equation for the first time looked the same in two different ways,at the end of multiplication. To whom shall we give credit on the order of sequence of events in the discovery of anuthpanna, apoorva, anurudha, a paripurna, annuna, amala, avimala (7) bodies. Shunyatha, shun ytaya. The only number 1729 interestingly enough for expressing it as sum of two cubes of two smallest numbers looked in two different ways .that

Ramanujan was a sadhak or devotee of his deity Namagiri Devi ( higher being or person from higher dimension) that's why his conjuctures are super natural
It is a great pleasure to see Professor Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar---himself an immortal in astrophysics---as one of the narrators of this film.
Ramanujan is one of the faces of incredible India.
It is so sad that here in India we were never taught about his life in schools. The left academicians were busy in glorifying barbaric mughals. But Indian heros were always kept in shadow...but truth always break all barriers and come out strong.
You took my words, same feeling
Well said
Schools don't tell u about everything. They prepare you for life by teaching skills based on logic and reason and they are what in short supply. The left is why people like u have human rights and modern amenities. If the global right had its way u would be a coolie somewhere. This doc is also made by a left leaning organization.
Ramanujuan was a true genius He was truly Given inspiration to others
Professor hardy should be given credit for highlighting his work Hats off to the Professor for publishing Ramanujuan work and not
Using it as his own An honest Professor

My deepest respect to Prof. G.H. Hardy for looking after S. Ramanujan. He was really an honest person and best mentor one could possibly have. And immensely Proud of Ramanujan Sir, one of the all time greats.
Oh his wife is alive. Oh people of Chennai please go and talk to this woman. We all need to know what this man was like.

How really amazing, ever since I heard of Ramanujan.
Alas this is the life of genius family in India. If not for London nobody would have recognised his talent.
even the world's greatest mathematicians were in awe of his genius. thanks for uploading.

Ramanujan was a true genius. One of the rare magicians...
I agree, magician is the right word. The equivalent in physics may be Feynman

I believe the good news is that Mrs Ramanujan enjoyed a number of pensions and awards from various bodies - the governments of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal, the Indian National Science Academy, the Ramanujan Mathematical Society (founded in 1985) and the Hinduja Foundation. Mrs Ramanujan died on April 13, 1994, aged 94.
What kind of joy is there when you have lost your genius and loving husband atleast there is no joy in such situation for an indian woman like me.
Felt very sad to see the conditions of the house and the photo of the great Ramanujam. Its really painful for a young widow to live a life like this. Amma.... Namaskarams to both of you. 🙌🙏🙏
She donated lot of price money
Thank you, Christopher.
Truly inspiring! The power of genius. My big take away is simple: for anyone with a natural talent, if cultivated to the extreme extent as did Ramanujan regarding his mathematical aptitude, well, genius lies within the possibility of all. Of course, how few can really be as engrossed in the subject so as to shun eating meals and the like. Truly remarkable ... truly remarkable.
12:14 Ramanujan's wife? I googled and found she was alive till 1994. Blessed lady to have seen a legend when he was alive.
Does he have any children
@@sreehari972 no. His wife later after his passing adopted a son and raised him alone.

Wow Shree SRINIVASA RAMANUJAN Sir hats off to you Sir for giving such a Great Maths to Cambridge & great Name to our country I'm feeling Proud for being INDIAN.

Thank you so much for uploading this, and thank you to all those involved.
Proud to be an Indian!!
If only India had Invented Paper, things would look so differently. India had and will super genius people.
You are absolutely right
Thank you for this evocative account of the remarkable story of Ramanujan. I recommend David Leavitt's "The Indian Clerk" to fill in the gaps (Hardy's hapless life, Littlewood and his wife's infatuation with Ramanujan, Bertie Russell, etc.,). Again, thank you….. especially the photographs, footage, and excellent narration. Very much appreciated. A sad but brilliant life.
After looking at this video, I decided to change my name, I was exactly 100 years younger to Srinivas Ramanujam. I don't you my grand father named as Ramanuja Ravi Teja but bearly don't know the simple calculation addition and subtraction, so I dont won't legendary name before my name. Respect you Sir
"He would only do sums"... "sums" ... "SUMS"
S gm he didn't. he quoted someone on the film who said that.
+Ibakecookiess That is what math problems are called in India i.e a sum. Why? i don't know.
I think combination of two hands can make a proud sound. I would say Ramanujan and Hardy were contemporary and Symbiotic mathematicians inspired mathematical world.
What a man he was, goddess NAMAGIRI GAVE HIM DIRECTION.. 🙏

You're very welcome. Glad you enjoyed it!
Truly an engima from the rich tapestry of the southern india.
Hardy and Littlewood were two of the greatest mathematicians of their time, and their work and influence is important to this day. Among their contributions are the Hardy-Littlewood circle method, the Hardy-Littlewood conjectures, the Hardy-Weinberg principle, Littlewood's conjecture, Littlewood-Paley theory, and a number of Tauberian theorems and zeta function results between them.
Hardy in particular is also one of the greatest expositors of mathematics of all time.
This is one of the best documentaries I have seen. Very well researched, edited, and narrated. Thank you very much.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.

Wow what a divine it is to know about Late Sir Ramanujan.
Thank you for posting this video. The simplicity this man carried in his life was the key to his success, there is lot to learn from this genuis yet a moderate man.

Thanks Christopher Sykes for this priceless documentary!
Great offer of SRINIVASA RAMANUJAN that with Periodic Radicals and trinomial, is enormous in the determination all the roots for a complete polynomial equation.
sir ramanujan was an excellent mathematician.... life dedicated to the world of mathematics.
My son had an instinctual understanding of math too so I have seen first hand the frustration caused when someone asks for proofs of something that, to the author, is as natural as breathing. It is like being asked to prove that blue is blue or that water is wet. It just is.
what he is doing now????
@@davinci5846 not solving conjectures probably hahaha

Commendable effort to the team leader and the dedicated team. No words to praise. 🙏🙏🙏
Actually crossing the sea does not mean you lose your caste.
It simply means that you will have to conform with their society.
For eg Indians consider the cow as one of five mothers and the Brits eat them.
There are also myths that there should not be a sea between a husband and wife.
The foundation being there was a sea between Ram (India) and Seeta (Sri lanka) and they could not live peacefully after that.
It is a superstition but so is going to a church or wearing a cross.
prashant kadali Its about putting in a little info to the context as to what was going on in the mind.
If u know that culture and what values he was raised with u can estimate the reluctance Ramanujan had.
1st thing is we should avoid misconception and if they are facts then we should try to find them instead of blaming ...!!!
2nd we should not blame man made things to the misconceptions of gods.
This all things are man made and God has nothing to do with it. Please refer Rig Vedas for that. I am not supporting God but facts ...!!!
Though he was good and he will be for ever a true legend but still i think he should had made this things in India. But we lacked a lot at that time and even today because we do not feel or they are succeeding in making us black in color but English in taste ...!!!!
going to church is a superstition, sorry i didnt get you?! talking about the cross it can be a superstition, unless its not idolised or worshiped or seen as a holy ornament.
Tell that to the fools that abandoned his corpse over this.

I feel very sorry for his wife. She too must have to struggle a lot in her life. Not having husband near her must be very hard for her.
How tragic! If he had had better accommodation and appropriate food in Cambridge, he might never have contracted TB!
Apparently, mathematical geniuses do their best work when they are young, so we can be thankful that he at least lived until his early 30s.
you are 100% correct. The social customs and taboos prevalent at his time particularly to Brahmins ,made Ramanujan not to take his wife abroad pushing him to sruggle for food. The backlog of rigorous Indian Brahminical tradition, made him shun food items available and suitable to the climatic conditions of a cold country leading to his falling a prey to TB which cost his great invaluable life. Atleast it was prudent, that great scientists -Astro-Physist Mr.Chandra sekar did not follow his ways .
Ramanujan had already suffered from other health conditions right from his childhood.
Hardy and (the other guy!) Littlewood were already established mathematicians when RAMANUJAN was brought to Cambridge. Their contribution to mathematics has been immense.
thanks so mch for this upload..
Gotta come back after my Exams
Thanks !
A great & extraordinary man
What a wonderful documentary this is. This will be a guide for all .
Starting at 49:24 the narrator says that while Hardy has a plaque at the Trinity bowling green and Littlewood's bust is in the common room, there is no memorial to Ramanujan. Well, there is in fact a bronze plaque to Ramanujan at Trinity - put up sometime after this documentary was made, I assume. Surprisingly, the devout Hindu Brahmin's memorial can be found in Trinity College Chapel.
Thanks for this!
great quality upload
Thanks professor hardy for supporting Ramanujan.
