It reminds me of letting something go. You know you have to do it, but you cant. It hurts so much, but you have lived with the pain for so long, you’ve become numb. At some point you will have to let it go. Live the rest of your life in peace, knowing that you’ll be better off without it. Your at the boardwalk at sunset, you hear this melody in your head, it makes you happy, you get distracted for a bit, messing around with the thing. But you snap back into it. This has to be done, you have to do it. You walk to the edge, you hold it up in the air, and with tears forming in your eyes, you say a faint “goodbye” and let it go. You know this was the right choice, or was it? All that pain in your chest, it’s still there. What you thought would have gone away, it’s still there. Nothing feels different. No better not worse. You realized that all that was for nothing, you spent so much time trying to figure out all this pain just to end getting it wrong. You pulled the wrong string. Now as you wallow in self pity watching the thing float away, across the ocean, the melody still goes on and on in your head.
My Bisnonna had a music box that played Schubert's Serenade. It's a small bell made in West Germany. She used to hang it on a chandelier in the dining room. When she died back in 2006, my Mom took it. Today it rests in a cabinet upstairs, next to a paper weight my late Bisnonno owned, as well. Although I was extremely young while she was alive, this song made me remember her. Thank you. May her and my Bisnonno forever rest in peace.
