Oh, and if you’re curious about the biological purpose of crying? Well, there are several theories, but there's no universally accepted scientific explanation for why humans cry in response to emotions. Some theories suggest that it could be a social signal, while others propose it could be a way to relieve stress.
I really hate when that happens. My sight gets cloudy and I rub my eyes trying to make it stop, then someone approaches me to ask if I'm ok thinking I'm crying.
Fun fact: There are three types of tears Basal tears keep dirt and germs away Reflex tears wash away other irritants (smoke, onion fumes etc) while emotional tears release chemicals to make you feel better.
Excellent info. You have more knowledge than Zak. Maybe you can actually tell us why we shed tears when we cry. Do you think it's by design to trigger the feel better chems and for no other reason? Do you think it's by design to ignite sympathy from others in order to help each other and create inter dependency and community? Lots to unpack here.
It can’t only trigger when you’re sad though, I let out tears when I laugh ALL the time, and when I yawn, there are some tears droplets that fall out a little also .

Incase your asking why they create an over abundance of tears:
When you’re emotional, your tear glands, or lacrimal glands, produce an overabundance of tears as part of your body’s response to intense feelings like sadness, joy, frustration, or even relief. This process is tied to the autonomic nervous system, specifically the parasympathetic division, which governs involuntary bodily functions.
Here’s how it works:
1. Emotional Stimuli: Strong emotions trigger activity in the brain, particularly in the limbic system, which is responsible for emotional processing. The hypothalamus, a part of this system, sends signals to the lacrimal glands via the facial nerve.
2. Tear Production: These signals prompt the lacrimal glands to release tears, resulting in what we call emotional crying. Unlike basal tears (for lubrication) or reflex tears (to flush out irritants), emotional tears often have a different composition, containing more stress-related hormones and proteins.
3. Stress Relief: Emotional tears are believed to serve a psychological function by helping reduce stress. Releasing stress hormones and toxins through tears might provide a sense of relief or catharsis after crying.
From an evolutionary perspective, emotional tears may also serve a social function, signaling distress or vulnerability to others and encouraging connection or support.
