On the cable grand I would think that the difference in volume when jumping between string sections is not a soundboard issue because the only difference is the set of strings. The action or hammers probably just have to be balanced out, or maybe there is tarnish that affects strings with windings more than strings without. A soundboard issue would appear at certain frequencies, where an odd section of notes would start buzzing or resonating. It would be a big coincidence that would appear right at the string transition.

It would have been nice to hear a sustain test in the bass with a big chord and time it. You need something objective. The other thing which would've been great, would have been a sustain comparison and a sample piece before and after a soundboard repair with the same strings.

Sustain test could become something we regularly do in demos. Very helpful feedback, thanks for taking the time to write it out! (:

The base strings are crap, thats not because of the soundboard.

Haha not exactly an apples-to-apples comparison. But we thought we'd make some use of an old piano we were disposing of anyway. Plus -- most pianos with major cracks like that are going to be old, dusty, rusty anyway. --Drew, 👪🎹

Thanks for the great presentation. So, how much will it cost to repair the minor and severe soundboard in average?

There are some low-cost ways of repairing minor soundboard cracks, the most popular is using a special glue to glue it back together (the bond of which is even stronger than orginally!), which can vary in complexity, depending on whether you're applying the glue from the top or bottom and if you need to loosen strings to get in there. Depending on the factors, probably $100 to $300 in most cases. Severe soundboard damage requires a whole new soundboard, which involves ripping the entire piano apart and essentially rebuilding it, which typically runs $15,000+, depending on the piano, the rebuilder, the other work getting done, transportation costs, etc.

What glue do use? It looked white in other videos, like elmers glue.

if you don’t press the pedal during play we can hear more clearly

    Those pianos sounds really terrible

Well they most likely haven't been tuned or restored like the first one, but I wouldn't say they sound terrible.

Yeah, we were going to junk the worst of them, but decided last minute to shoot a quick video. Next time, we'll plan ahead a little more :)

Those pianos sound great! Nothing a little elmers glue couldnt fix.
