- Just starting out in historical costuming? Want to make a super fancy 18th century robe a la franchaise gown and float through the halls of Versailles? Or maybe you want to start history bounding and want a fun wrap cape to create? (or maybe something from another time period...)
Then it is time you heard of (if you haven't already heard of them) @AmericanDuchess1 !
They are a wonderful resource with commercial patterns, books and even a couple of free patterns... ON TOP OF their main business which is selling historically accurate footwear (which is GORGEOUS!).

Aww man, I wished you made a video of you making the cape.
It was a bit spur of the moment to make, didn’t think to film until about half way through.
I bought both the hairstyles and dresses books as well as the bodice and shift pattern! I absolutely love them! I love all the details!
I just love how many clear photos they put in there. It helps so much!
Kirilee Cosplay right? It makes it so much easier to follow! Many time they just write out the instructions in articles and old books, but the visual aids help so much! I’m a highly visual learner, so it just make it less stressful to be able to see where it’s all going as you follow along
You and me both!
They dont have the stays pattern or instructions in the book, apparently it needs a book on its own.
I have the patterns but haven't bought the book yet.
Am making the cape right now
Oh nice!!!
For all those in the EU, there's a shop, La Rose Passementarie, in the Netherlands, who sells American Duchess Shoes and Accessories. They usually to a pre-order.
Ah! That is fabulous!
Love to buy the Book just wanted know how much Australian Dollars did the book cost plus freight? I love American duchess watch them all the time. Thank you for this video I am one of the nervous ones but your videos make give me the push I need to start. Thank you Cheers Tricia.
I actually bought the book from book depository so it was pretty good price wise (plus I got it from the Australian stash so it arrived relatively quickly)
@@KirileeCosplay Thank you so much got one the cost was nearly equal to just the freight from America . Cheers Tricia.
Wowzers!
I am making the stays from this pattern. The biggest size in this pack is too small by about 15cm, I havent seen anyone do alterations to this pattern. I would like to ask for some help. There are 4 pattern pieces, how do I add the additional measurements , do I add it to each seam? I am very confused on how to do this, I like to see what I need to do ( visual learner ) I know of others that have done pattern grading but I really would like to see it done on this pattern so I can get it into my head what I need to do.
I hope you can help me out.
I have not made the stays
Hello. I will definitely buy their patterns! Thank you so much for your reviews ! You help us a lot!
Pleasure!
I live in France and I totally get you 😭 Shipping from the US is soooooo expensive. And I usually get taxes (20% of the price) on top of everything when I have to get the parcel at the post office😭
I never used one of their patterns (never had a project needing one) but I'm a great fan of their work. Their dressmaking book is absolutely stunning !
OUCH!
They are good patterns. I would say if you wanted to try the cape- it’s a free one and good fun ^_^
shout out.... Aussie Aussie Aussie, Oi!Oi! Oi!
Yes re shipping and tones of your comments.
Thank you so much
Aussie Aussie Aussie indeed ^_^
Pleasure!
Is there a patrerns in the book?
There is but it is gridded so you have to draw them
Yourself
I've scaled the free PDF Cape pattern up, first time I tried anything like drafting at all and I dont have drafting / graf paper.. it was a struggle but I got it ^^ now I just have to make the cape!! It really is beautiful.
I was the same in regards to the first time drawing out the grid and sizing it up. What colours did you use for your gorgeous cape?
I've yet to make the cape. I'm planning to use some fleece blankets I have laying around and don't use as my first attempt, in navy and synthetic lime green, so the first one is gonna be for just around the house and when I feel confident enough I might attempt it in actual wool ^^ I'm looking forward to doing it but I need to get over the frustration of actually drafting the pattern first 😆 then I'll start the glorious cape 😁
I can promise, it is worth it ^_^
That i belive!!
I've had those Simplicity patterns for ages - I didn't know about them before, was browsing in Spotlight and went "... Abby?" and bought them based on being an Abby Cox fan. 🤣 They're still beyond my skill level, but one day!
Honestly, they aren't too hard at all and the pattern instructions read quite easily
I bought the patterns because they seem to be the only available to me as well and I can’t wait to make a costume!!!
They are really great!
I’ve just started on the shift from those patterns!
Nice! I hope it works out for you!
