I’ve been installing carrier for 35 years so I’m very familiar with it. All brands have good units and bad units. But as far as efficiency, you’re better off going with a lower efficiency. The actual efficiency units achieve can be less than they are marketed at. The new seer2 rating system helps with this a bit. You have to pay way more for a couple points of efficiency. Sometimes you can’t reach a balance point where it saves you money before it needs replacement. A federal tax credit only works if you owe money on your taxes April 15th. They will not pay you any money if you get a refund. You have to owe. So save yourself money and get a 15 seer heat pump or a/c. Put in a 95% gas furnace instead of a 97%. You will only save a few bucks a month with the higher efficiency. I always find what will be the most cost effective for my customers.

Yes I was a small HVAC owner contractor. Just go for the least efficient , that gets the rebate, and get a good small business to install it. They are reliable and when the die rinse and repeat.

I need help from both of you guys in this thread. My Goodman died and it was just shy of 6 years. More to fix than worth. Do you have a brand you suggest for the least efficient? I am in Phoenix so need this a lot. This will be the main AC as I do have a 2nd unit.

A federal tax credit is deducted from your total tax bill, not the refund. If you had $10,000 in income tax withheld during the tax year and you received a $1,000 tax credit, your taxes owed would be $10,000 minus $1,000 equals $9,000 taxes owed. The only way you would not receive a tax credit is if you did not pay any income tax for that tax year.

This is really good advice. Thank you. My experience has been a simpler version is typically more reliable and long lasting than a complex one. As the lower cost unit looks to cost about half as much as the upper end, it seems like the overall cost of ownership, including actual cost of electricity and operation will likely not justify the higher price. And if the lower cost version proves more durable due to less to go wrong, the cost differential only increases in your favor with the lower price unit

I had a 4 ton, 2 speed performance system installed last year, they are not built like a tank as he says. The condenser base is so thin the system would not sit flat on the concrete pad, the base is very flimsy, they need to go to a composite base that is very sturdy , other brands are already using them. The top cover for the condenser had screws going in at an angle because the holes did not line up, one screw is half way in and at angle, but QC passed it. The condenser coil has black plastic spacers where the coil meets the base and the coil was not a perfect fit and some of the fins were crushed at the base, but they had those spacers to try and level out the coil, it is hard to describe. The louver side panels do not offer much protection, there is no screw in the middle of the panel on the edges, so when they move it around to position the condenser and push on the louver panels they make contact with the coil and bend the fins, at 4:10 in the video you can see fins already bent on the right side of the unit, probably from someone moving the unit around.
Then they put a 16 seer label in the condenser box, I had to call Carrier and give them the serial numbers to confirm it was a 17 seer unit. Quality control is lacking at Carrier. I replaced an Amana system, aka, Goodman, it was not reliable, but it was built like a tank.

Be very careful offering the 2nd year labor warranty yourself. Anything over the one year warranty requires an Insurance license. The Insurance Commission can find out and there are penalties. However, he also quickly stated that you can “register the equipment with the manufacturer which can extended your Parts warranty another 5 yrs and Labor warranty another 1yr”
I believe with his company Atlas AC. That they have a department that will actually process the additional warranty. Ideally, you’re notified within 2 weeks by text. If not, contact them or search on the warranty website that the manufacturer uses.
