  • Join me on this TRUE explore. I had no previous knowledge about this place, I caught an old sign on the road so I whipped the truck around and checked it out. I dug up some history on the place and turns out it was a VERY famous place back in the day.
Please enjoy the facts below, the tour and as always, stay safe & Happy Exploring 🍃
History dates back to the 1934-35 season, when the 1.1 mile, 930 vertical foot Mountain Trail debuted. Described as novice except in fast snow conditions, the trail was 8 to 12 feet wide. The first competition on the trail was held on New Year's Day 1935.
This mountain ski area made headlines at the start of the 1969-70 season when Johnny Cash filmed scenes for a made for television movie "Trail of Tears" at the ski area. The mountain resort was chosen for its ability to simulate an actual blizzard with its snowmaking system.
Every Saint Patrick’s Day, the snowy mountain was dyed green for skiers to enjoy an Irish theme as the owner was an Irishman.
Ted Kennedy made a splash by visiting the mountain resort in conjunction with the start of his Senate re-election campaign. The local newspaper noted that he was 75 minutes to a scheduled lunch event and departed early to go hit the slopes.
The mountain resort also made headlines in February 1975 when Olympian Suzy Chaffee visited the area, performing a "ballet" on skis.
Though the resort had been popular amongst skiing governors Endicott Peabody and Francis Sargent during its first decade of operation, it soon found itself locked into battle with the new Michael Dukakis administration. In early 1975, the Outdoor Advertising Board ordered the removal of the entrance sign. Jim, the owner responded to the sign removal in the mid 1970s by instead painting the resort name on the side of a COW and having it graze in a roadside pasture. How’s that for getting around red tape. Years later a new sign went up.
Two new trails debuted for the 1966-67 season with 7 miles of trails open at night, the mountain resort billed itself as the largest night skiing facility in the world.
Meanwhile, a nearby ski area was rapidly growing, eventually surpassing this resort in both lift infrastructure and snowmaking firepower. By the time the 1990s drew to a close, the facilities were aging, as was its dwindling skier base.
The owner finally sold the mountain resort to fellow rivals and concentrated on golf. The rivals operated it for three seasons, initially with plans to install a high speed detachable chairlift. After investing in snowmaking improvements, the new ownership realized the mountain resort would require more investment than they could justify with the declining skier-base. As a result, they shut down skiing operations after the 2001-2002 season. The tubing continued on for a few more years then eventually closed.

I used to ski at Brodie Mountain for many many winters. This is soooo sad. My dad would winterize our trailer and we would spend time here……. School vacations and what not. When the Kelly’s owned this. At. Patrick’s Day celebrations and New Years celebrations were the best!!!!!! This is bringing back soooooo many memories
We would ski back and forth to our camper which was parked in Dot’s Place. Thank you for doing this!!!!! Brodie Mountain😊💚

The old lodge was torn down in 2009. The canteen was extra for employee but also for people who rode the orange chair lift which brought you to the top of the mountain. The canteen was also used to hold parties and the pool use to be right next to that building. I spent many winters and summers at that mountain as my step mother worked there most of my childhood doing payroll and Jim Kelly's bookkeeping

Sad to see what has happened to Brodie Mountain Ski Area over the past 20 years. Used to ski there when I was a kid and almost every St. Patrick's days, because the people with the last name of Kelly could ski free (old owner's last name is Kelly), so my father, sister and me could ski for free. Wish they would restore the resort or clean up the site, rather let it continue the way it is.

Actually that round turning mechanism that is at the ski lift would not spin you around and take you up the hill. It would spin the empty ski chair (After letting off the folks coming down), and spin around using the round turnstile ...then chair would be in the opposite direction at which time the skiers going up would sit on the chair and ascend the hill.
I just wanted to clarify when the ski chair went around that round mechanism on the roof, it was empty. It didn’t have people sitting in the chair when it went around.

Hi Marlo! I came here from your other video of your almost camping trip here. That was quite a place in its day! That was a cool wooden wall mount for that coffee maker! I haven't seen anything like that either. It's surprising the power is still on there after over two decades. I wonder if the power company just forgot to turn it off when it closed? I can't imagine anyone still paying the bill there. That bathroom and the rest of the room looked like someone had been squatting there, especially with the food there. As far as being homeless goes, it would be a great setup with the power on, a stove, and if the door still locked it would ideal. It's also out in the country where no one would bother them.
Christmas lights. A staple in all explores! 🎄😆
The children's center was nice when it was operating. Beautiful waterfall! I'm always surprised at some of the things left behind. All of those snow tubes, the snowmobile, all of the things in the children's center, etc. I've never understood why so much is left behind that could have been sold which would help in recouping at least some of the owner's losses.
Lots of cooked apples by the canteen! Put some bacon, eggs, and biscuits with them and it would be a great breakfast! Sure was a lot of expensive ski equipment left in there.
The hotel looked like it was condos rather than hotel rooms. That one section of stairs being out was crazy! Close call! I wonder what caused it to collapse?
I see what you were talking about at the camper trailer not being in the maintenance building. Maybe with the power still on, maybe more squatters. That was a cool old console TV in there! Back when TV's were fine furniture.
This was an amazing and beautiful place! I see why now camping here would be so awesome! I don't think it's safe any longer with the camper showing up. You never know who put it there. It could be even someone running from the law. That wouldn't be unusual now. Thank you for letting me tag along! I thoroughly enjoyed this one!

So I grew up skiing here as a kid. It was called the upside down mountain cause you would drive to the top and park. It had an Alice in wonderland theme and all the trails were named after characters in the movie. So the steepest trail was called the mad hatter. They also had people dressed up in costumes for all the characters and would ski around all day. I loved that place.

I'm a big Fan of his,RIP Johnny....anyways, he must have been very, very tired and just wanted a fast bed to go to sleep because it just seems so beneath his standards to stay there.or maybe he had a hot groupie with him because I don't think Mr.Cash was into skiing.
