The Story of Celeste's Most Infamous Mod

  • Celeste is a challenging indie platformer, with the world record speedruns breaking the game in many ways. But it also has many mods (such as Strawberry Jam and D-sides), with some of the mods being near impossible.
    This is the history of the most* infamous Celeste mod: Crystal Garden, a 4 room TAS puzzle map, and how i did it deathless i guess idk,
    Video created fully by me, with a bit of help from Parrot Dash and woofdoggo.
    ** MUSIC LIST IS AT 36:53 and also every time the music changes the song name is at the bottom left **
    0:00 Part 0 - Intro
    0:54 Part 1 - The Map's Release
    4:24 Part 2 - Beating the Impossible
    12:07 Part 3 - Unlucky Circumstances
    13:56 Part 3.5 - Even MORE Unlucky Circumstances
    15:40 Part 4 - Mastery of Version 1.4
    17:57 Part 5 - Doing it, deathless
    24:47 Part 6 - The Newest Version
    30:08 Part 7 - The Newest Version, Deathless.
    35:19 Part 8 - The Future?

    CORRECTION: 17:38 - isabelle / issy was the first person to reclear Crystal Garden around 2 weeks prior, her run had 518 deaths, also 1:20 these are ZIP MOVERS not traffic blocks, i forgot their actual entity name lmao,
    also yes i refer to self in 3rd person, looking back that wasnt a good idea lol,
    also all the music for this video is at 36:53 if u want to listen to it and support the artists

      35:13 I'm pretty sure that that placement doesn't mean it's the fourth hardest. the rankings are high, medium, and low but inside those rankings it is just listed alphabetically. since Crystal Garden starts with a C it is listed at the top of all the tier 1 goldens.

    okay edit actually heres just random Notes
    17:38 - ur reclear was in fact Not the first reclear, cuz i recleared it on may 24th (it was 518 deaths and took a bit over an hour) lol
    21:39 - goldens arent ordered by difficulty within subtiers, theyre ordered alphabetically, so "around 20th" is wrong but i guess close enough?
    35:13 - it was Never the 4th hardest golden, again, subtiers are alphabetical. there are several high tier 1 goldens that are harder (also showing that its not really close to tier 0)

    • @seazeiscool
      @seazeiscool  7 місяців тому +14

      1) oh wow interesting why was that never on the hlist low death spreadsheet ever considering you own it, i asked some ppl if anyone had recleared before me but everyone said no, maybe i shouldve researched that a bit more
      2) yeah its just an estimate
      3) fair but the tier 0 / high tier 1 discussions made me assume it was somewhere around there, ofc no one really knows anything rn tho so maybe i shouldnt have said that at all because its a complete shot in the dark

    • @mystral_fox
      @mystral_fox 7 місяців тому +10

      @@seazeiscool it was in fact on the low death sheet but since you beat it like 2 weeks later u probably just never noticed, u can see my reclear n stuff on my personal sheet in the celeste tab

    2:43 Celeste is a game built with many different solutions in mind. The game, especially the early game, has many different routes the player can take in each room, and that's completely intentional. Why would a mod creator go out of their way to make sure that their room only has one solution? That just seems stupid, unintuitive, and overall disrespectful to players.

    congrats on the golden, i will now go cry into my 1a and 2a goldens. no but for real, the celeste modding scene is something else and as a casual player, i‘m very happy to observe from a distance. content like this is super fascinating to me because my philosophy with celeste is that i will solve every screen eventually, the question is just when and will i give up beforehand. in this case i would have thrown my controller across the room and cried into my pillow uncontrollably so mad respect to anyone who even got past the first room.

    A lot of people don't like this map... and not for entirely unfounded reasons. It's brutal, it's uncompromising, it doesn't care about things like human rng/subpixel checks. It's often clowned on as the pinnacle of "mapper can't live with players cheesing their map". And yet I have to admire it for that; the map's premise, from Etpio himself, is to be a map to push the very limits of the best of the best players. Celeste players, I've noticed, tend to underestimate where the community's skill level will be in some time (xyz golden is impossible, you know how it goes) and yet Etpio managed to the map off so well that it holds up to that promise (at least with intended routing) to this day. And it does it with style - the moves room 2 pulls with feathers, for example, are rarely seen even in today's maps. I honestly do hope this map does get that next round of decheese, so it can better fulfill its premise.
    A lot of people don't like Etpio, either... and not for entirely unfounded reasons. He can have very... unconventional opinions about celeste maps, which he defends with gusto and an often conceited tone. But, having interacted with him a lot during the development of the Flusheline Community Collab, he's also a very smart fellow. He knows his way around Celeste very well, and is able to create consistently fresh and interesting gameplay; I hold him, in a sense, in high regard for that. I managed to playtest one of the maps in his unreleased campaign, and that level became favorite celeste map to date.
    All of this to say: I haven't seen Etpio send a message on discord in almost a year now. I hope he's alright.

    I didn't look at the channel name before watching this video so I didn't realize Seaze was talking about himself in the third person until the end of the video
