  • I sealed the cap to keep nib from drying out. Didn't work. Appears to be a bad design. Put in a Lamy Broad nib. Like the nib & the Robert Oster Sublime ink but pen dries out in a day. Limits one's enjoyment.

    Thank you for very intresting videos! I solved the ”dry-out-problem” on my 3059’s by taking the inner cap from a broken Jinhao 599 and mount it in the Lanbitou cap. It fits perfect and the pen don’t dry out. Problem solved👍

      @@chrisrap52 I have a couple of these coming in the post. I also have a ton of 599s that I can sacrifice so I'll certainly try this hack too. Aside from this, I read somewhere that not only the nib but the feed is Lamy-style and you can transfer the feed from a Safari-family pen to this one. So this has me wondering what evil Frankenpen monstrosity I could build with a base 3059, a Jinhao 599 cap liner, a genuine Lamy nib and a feed from a Wing Sung 6359 which is an excellent AL-Star clone with solid reliability. None of this should be necessary if Lanbitou hadn't cut corners, but it's an interesting project.

    The white tack fix does seem to work, and my Lanbitous dry out less, according to the ink used. However Chinapen sells a reasonably priced Lanbitou style pen ("transparent high capacity piston ink pen") with a good early Caliarts ego type cap. Any one who likes that Caliarts’ cap could use the Chinapen’s cap on their Lanbitou. On the other hand the Chinapen although lightly built, is quite good, it doesn’t seem to dry out and allows an easy swap to a Lamy Italic nib, so perhaps worth a try for itself. I can’t work out who makes this, but the number on the pen is 360A. I have a few and with a Lamy nib they work quite well for me.

    Thank you, Chris. That's too bad. But QA on these inexpensive pens will inherently be spotty. I have just filled and been using the white model 3059 and it's been great. Smooth, nice flow. So I will leave it alone for a few days and see if the same kind of drying happens.

    If you fill the cap with water, it runs out at the clip showing the clip slot is probably the problem. Rather than using glue, which can easily damage the pen, I used white tack to seal this and the screw hole. I checked that water no longer runs out of the pen, then pushed a little cling film onto the white tack for protection. I will add silicon grease to the cap threads, and hope that will prevent the drying out problem you mention. I have not yet filled the pens, so haven’t, as yet, checked that this completely solves the problem.

      I use a water based permanent outdoor wood glue. Doesn't affect plastic.

    • @anthonyhind8898
      @anthonyhind8898 6 років тому +1

      Right Chris, wood glue does sound safe. I had first tried Bostik glue, as another post suggested, and damaged one of the pens, so for the others, I have used the white tack.

    The problem is, I think, because I see it in your video at time 07:52-07:54 , that there is a gap between the feeder and the nib around the tip section.

    I've sealed five of these completely, none of them dry out anymore. I put a solid layer in and used a Q-tip to smear it around the edges.
    I inked all four that I bought and they've been sitting in my drawer for a week. They all wrote instantly.
    That said, the nibs are kind of... meh. The wing sung 3008 costs the same money, is actually sealed properly, and has a nib that works. It's definitely the better pen.

    Thank you for sharing your experience with Chinese pens. I have a number of pens on the way. It's very interesting to get an engineer's perspective on this pens.
    I'll be very interested to learn what do you use to flush your pens with.

      I always use plain water. Can't go wrong. If water not cleaning, old ink, then I'll add some liquid detergent & ammonia. This is only for flushing not soaking & rinse with plain water after.

    I got a batch and filled one up with apache sunset and am having no problems at all. In fact, I put a Lamy nib on and was not happy, it did not sit on securely and did not write well at all. Back with the original nib and it was fine. Had it for a few days. No crusting, no hard starts, nada!?!? Hope it stays that way and hope the others are good 🤕

    I found that the QC of this pen is not very good,i bought 6 pens,one of them has ink drop problem;one of the nibs can't write .I think the filling system of this pen is a good design, but nibs,not so much. If the company can do something on the nibs and air tight it's gonna be a good long-term pen.

  • @davidanderson3425

    I had to smile at your Figboot remark. Does the problem affect your entire batch of four pens or is it only the lime green pen that is drying out?

  • @Richard1855
    @Richard1855 6 років тому +1

    Chris, I received my set of 4 coloured Lanbitou 3059 five days ago. I immediately inked the exact same lime coloured pen with Pilot iroshizuku chiku-rin. I have been using it everyday since and it writes first time every time. No drying issues found. The construction of the cap would be very similar to that of the Wing Sung 3008(I own one for a couple of weeks now) in that there is a lack of a cap liner, same volume of air under the cap and clip is retained by a screw, and it too writes first time every time. Can't help but think that you might, for unexplained reason; got stuck with a one-off dude pen. What are the other 3 Lanbitou pens like?

    • @chrisrap52
      @chrisrap52  6 років тому +1

      I will be doing a retraction shortly. Linked up a clear one with an iroshizuku & it doesn't dry out. Have a clear ECO for a direct comparison.

    • @Richard1855
      @Richard1855 6 років тому

      I honestly don't think a retraction is required by you, as it is what it is that you genuinely did have an issue with that one particular Lanbitou 3059 pen. You were just unlucky to have ended up with probably a one-in-a-thousand failure for a mass produced item. If nothing else you were the "test pilot" that did all us pen users a good turn by highlighting what CAN but not necessary WILL happen. I fairly confident a lot of viewers share my opinion and would also want you to keep going with your no holds barred approach.

    • @1999Valkyrie
      @1999Valkyrie 5 років тому

      Richard Han, in my experience the Lanbitou 3059 won't dry out if you use it daily, it's only when you leave it for 4-5 days between uses.

    Hi Chris...I have this pen and currently have it filled with Noodler's Bad Black Moccasin, and I have no 'dry nib' problems. I can leave the pen sitting for days and it starts immediately. Perhaps I have an extraordinary pen, or the difference in ink may be helping.

    • @chrisrap52
      @chrisrap52  6 років тому +1

      I too have mixed results with this model. It is very sensitive to ink. Overall a good pen for thr price.

  • @DanielleEmberley
    @DanielleEmberley 6 років тому +1

    I have had a chance to use the four pens I have here. I like the way all four them write. They work well in the Kokuyo Campus notebooks I use. I have using Waterman and Monteverde inks. I do find that they tend dry quickly if you leave them uncapped for any length of time. Flow seems normal once I start writing for a minute. Out of the set of four I do have a problem with the red pen. The cap for that pen does not fit properly. The cap will not post properly and that same cap does not thread well onto the pen. At first I thought it was cross threaded until I realized it would not post. Other color caps from the other pens work fine on the red pen. Anyone have a similar problem?

    • @chrisrap52
      @chrisrap52  6 років тому +2

      Explains my experience with the green one. Inconsistent quality.

    • @Richard1855
      @Richard1855 6 років тому +1

      I think in reality with any mass produced item, it would be expected that there will be a certain percentage of defect. I too have bought the set of four and have only inked up one with no issues, and may just have to test the rest, fingers crossed not to experience the problems you and chrisrap52 have.

    I bought the 0.38 nib (fine) it is even worse than this pen !
    it comes hooded, first time it worked fine, left it aside for couple of days and boom, it doesn't work
    not even priming it works ! i push the piston down until ink drips from the back side of the nib, yet the pen would not work !
    terrible experience with this pen, if all of them are like this then it's a disaster !

      @chrisrap52  6 років тому +1

      Yeah i agree, i mean i have a Twsbi eco and i can see that the quality of Lanbitou is not that bad considering its price, the un-hooded ones were fine, but my hooded one dries out really quickly.
