Liar Game is so good it was adapted into a Japanese AND a Korean series. They don't trump the manga but they're still worth watching! They divert from the manga quite a bit too.
It still baffles me how some people who've watched squid game and enjoyed it a lot refuse to give animanga a chance because it is animanga. But it's also good to see others who enjoyed the show give other forms of entertainment such as animanga a go. Good to see Joey covering this, hopefully more people start to get into the medium as a result.
Tomodachi Game is another good Survival Game manga. While it's not really "Survival Horror", its more debt and money related in its survival games, it's definitely still in that same field. And yes, the story may not be the most incredible and can get kind of ridiculous at times (especially in the later part of the series) and the series as a whole is far from perfect, it's still very fun and engaging and is quite the wild ride. The best part of the whole series is the protagonist who you always think is about to lose but somehow manages to comeback by revealing his masterminded plan he had been constructing all along from the very start. If you're looking for a less serious and more off the walls but well thought out series of survival mind games, then I'd highly recommend Tomodachi Game.
other manga I may recommend is probably tomodachi game, it's very similar to squid game because of the death game that they play is usually children's game and replace the indebt adult with indebt highschoolers. It have a bunch of twist and turns in the story and the MC is probably the most interesting character in the series which is rare for this type of genre
A great japanese movie (based on a novel) that might even have kick-started this genre is Battle Royale(2000). It also had a manga series based on the novel. I find it strange that not more people are making the comparison between Squid Game and Battle Royale.
PLEASE to everyone !!! read and watch the one who started it all: Battle Royale. It is such a good book, extremely engaging and entertaining. It formed the survival game genre as we know it know and really paved the way. It´s very old but definitely worth it. AND it is one of the veryyyy very few movies that are actually JUST LIKE THE BOOK, can you imagine that? A movie that follows the storyline of the original for about 80 to 90 % ??? thats amazing
i'm so happy that joey talked about my fav manga of all times "liar game", I love It so much and not many talk about it. i gave it solid 10/10 as soon as i finished it. ofc I've read/watched many other entries in this video.
BTOOOM is so slept on. The art and story is absolutely incredible in my opinion. Finished a year and a half ago or so and have been trying to get my friends to read it since. So glad to see it on this list.
5:00 Only DR1 was adapted into an anime. The DR3 anime is not an adaptation of DR3 but a continuation of Danganronpa 2 which finishes the storylines in DR1, DR2 and DR Despair Girls.
Glad to see you touch on the genre, as I'm obsessed with it when it comes to books, shows and games. The Zero Escape series is another good one, as well as "Gnosia", which released this year on the switch for a relatively cheap price, with a well written plot. Also Danganronpa V3 didn't get an anime either. The Danganronpa 3 anime simply concludes the events of the games prior to it.
The Alice in Borderland live action is really good. Especially episode 3. It does lull in the second half of the series but definitely worth a watch. Waiting on season 2 which is being filmed right now.
Episode 3 was definitely the highlight of the whole show. It's a shame they couldn't keep that momentum going. I'm still looking forward to next season :)
Kaiji is definitely better than squid game and other series mentioned even though the artstyle is weird the psychological drama in kaiji is so good and it is very realistic. It is definitely one the underrated seinen animes.
Guys try Real account!! It's pretty much the same as Squid game but instead of adults it's mostly highschoolers. They're forced to play games and of they lose they get killed
@@iznmodder dude have you read the manga? The next arc is my absolute favorite you don’t even have to know majhong to enjoy it that and one poker please do
Squid game and Btooom! story is 80% similar. The only differences are Btooom play battle royale with bombs while Squid Game play kids game. Also how they conclude the stories are different. Other than that, the concept is pretty much identical, VIPs, impostor in the facility, winner got to be billionaire, stranded in an unknown island etc
my first thought was deadman wonderland, it has games and obstacles courses. but watching squid game did bring me back to my edgy teenage years where I watched shows like these, I was surprised to see a killing game centric show make it this big this many years later.
The recent anime "Battle Game in 5 seconds"," High Rise Invasion," & semi death game "Gleipnir" has the potentials to be great but unfortunately falling short by either the weird turn of events or simply the animation quality took a nosedive into low budget swamps.
i found a manga called "Real Account" to be a great story of this genre. Although i didn't finish it at the time cause it was ongoing but i remember it having seriously unique and purposeful games that the characters had to play that really served well with the story's "moral" and social commentary. And of course it also has the mental gymnastics where the participants try to find creative and unique ways to cheat the system along with some other very unique plot points like what indicates a participant losing. overall would recommend
Joey about Deadman Wanderland: "I still remember how much of an absolute shock the first episode was." Meanwhile me: I don't even remember what happened in that episode *sweating profusely*.
I also recommend the manga Though You May Burn to ash. sydsnap made a video on it if your interested. Is another death game series and it also has to do with money so it’s why I recommend it. Also extremely underrated.
Liar Game is one of my favorite manga/anime/show (excluding the Kr adaptation cause that disappointed me ugh). As already mentioned in the video, I was so amazed at the games they introduced there, the mind tricks they used.... I remember watching/reading it and thinking... HOW?
confusingly enough, the cast of danganronpa 2 are the stars of the danganronpa 3 anime. the danganronpa v3 characters are technically the only ones not in an anime adaptation.
Tomodachi game also takes the money aspect just like in squid game but its not really as brutal where people kill eachother , i think it leans more to the big brain stuff and i definitely recommend it
Doubt (as well as Judge) and Dead tube have been on my to-read list for a long time but I've been very slow at reading manga after high school when I initially took interest in Japanese media. I might take months long breaks from reading. I've read Ousama game a long time ago and all I can remember is that it wasn't bad. Deadman wonderland has to be one of my all time favourites.
I'm surprised that this isn't actually an Anime man channel video being anime, but hey, I'll see it anyway and it's nice to see the Joey channel picking up love seeing the variety stuff and anime and manga themed stuff and these recommendation videos are great.
I highly recommend the Liar Game (Japanese Drama and Movie) and the SPEC series (including the movies). Some of the content might not aged well, but it is definitely a good watch for people looking into similar vein of content. PS* Toda Erika is in both series \^.^/
I know you said we shouldn't but I really loved the end of Squid Game where we found out it was all a dream the main character had due to the fact he had gotten into a coma from getting a squid stuck in his throat, this is the kind of dark comedy and subversion that surprisingly fit the show very well but you still wouldn't see coming.
This specific type of thrillers are some of my favorites! The tug of war scene reminded me of Kaiji 🥰 I also thought of King's Game when watching the show-
I'm gonna add Real Account here It's a finished manga where social media became a death game platform, sort of battle royale i guess. Fricking intense, the story is pretty good and the mc is badass. Got some fan services too. Heard the news that it's going to get a live-action adaptation years ago, though i haven't heard anything about it ever since.
Danganronpa 3 and Danganronpa v3 are totally different things. 3 (an anime) came out before v3 (the game) and is not an anime adaptation of v3. Unless there's a separate anime adaptation of v3 I'm not aware of. Danganronpa 3 the animation is a new killing game with survivors of DR1, and also a prequel to Danganronpa 2 showing the lives of the DR2 students before the killing game starts.
When I watched Squid Game, I thought it will be like Liar Game but deadly. I was confused when there are no overly smartass, overly evil, overly manipulative, and overly dramatic people in there. There are tropes, but very realistic. The games are not the mindblowing, twisted kinds too, but simply children games. I think it's nice. While I'm not a huge fan of the drama, idk, something stopped me, I still like it.
Something interesting about the concept of kami sama no iutori ni is that its author's new series is very much using the survival and human loss of decency is the hardest of situations into a sports manga. I'm not that into football but Blue Lock is pretty fun to read
There is also one survival game but a bit different called real account. This one is about people who uses a popular social media account called real account that was suddenly drag into the digital world leaving their body in the real world. If they died in the game they also died in real life. I recommend checking this out if you really have nothing to do. This is quite mid but still pretty good nonetheless
Joey, youtubes now asking us questions like what we rate this video out of 5 stars, and how we felt about it. I just want you to know I put that this video was life changing.
i almost got emotional when i see danganronpa first on the list and when he said his fav danganronpa game is the second one lol im that much obsessed with dnganronpa
For Tokusatsu fans, Garo Versus Road may be your cup of tea. 100 contestants are put in a VR game where the sole survivor gains the power of Garo. The only downside is there isn't much Garo, other than the lore and a couple of eps. There's also Kamen Rider Ryuki.
Its impressive just how much this show blew up. Not only is it the most popular Netflix show of all time but its not even a close 2nd. Its ahead by tens of millions of viewers haha. But damn it deserves its time in the light, I thought it was great.
Squid Game was created and written by Hwang Dong-hyuk. Hwang says he originally developed the script in 2008 when he was in a bad financial situation and living in a Manhwabang, reading Japanese survival manga books such as Battle Royale, Liar Game and Gambling Apocalypse: Kaiji - Wikipedia
Oh, also another good Korean drama with the horror/survival theme and stuff is Sweet Home, not really game based but this kind of feel is definetelly there, so I recommend it a lot, the characters building is specially nice!
Squid game for me is a mix of Kaiji (with the debt, money and system thing) and As tge God's Will (Kamisama no Iutoorii) for the children game of death. Like they both start up with the same game. Squid game only made it Korean version.
5:02 . Correction: danganronpa 1 (trigger happy havoc) is the only game in the series that got an anime adaption. Neither danganronpa 2 nor v3. Not even the ultra despair girls. Got an anime adaption. So I'm not sure why joey said only the second one didn't get an anime. He is probably confusing V3 with the anime danganronpa 3 (despair and future arcs)
first thing i would recommend to anyone who liked squid game is obviously liar game...but here are some other manga that were not mentioned in the video: - Limit (survival, similar to books like animal farm or lord of the flies just in manga form - 6 volumes) - SCM (mindgames, not necessarily the participants lifes at stake, but entertaining nevertheless - 10 volumes) - Judge and Secret (both series from the same author as doubt and therefore very similar - 6 and 3 volumes) - Werewolf game (more or less based on the concept of the cardgame...you know how it works! who may live and who has to die, a trial decides - 3 volumes and 2 spin of volumes) than there are more series like corpse party, akuma no riddle or high rise invasion, which i found not outstandingly good, but an alright read for in between
Kamisama no Iutoori, due to the traditional games/toys to the culture, and liar game was my choice for the squid game similarities. I also heard that the director of squid game had plan this for a while. Deadman in wonderland was an interesting one.
Another is a similar kind of anime, it doesn't have the same premise nor objective, but it is really mind bending, so you could watch that if you want gore, thriller, mystery and a fire intro, also because it isn't just like squid game it gives more of a separate perspective, that way, the two won't compare, but at the same time will have the same kind of power
the series that i thought of was "The Ones Within" well it can be because i haven't watched many horror survival series and this one along with dengonrompa(dont know if spelling is correct) stood out to me.(and i prefer manga over anime because manga feels lot more mysterious to me)
God I love kamisama no iutoori so much the second one is my favorite. It’s so incredibly creative and I love the characters and the death games are my favorite part of it all. I really recommend people read them both and for people who have read them both read zero, it explains the backstory of acid mana and why the games are happening.
Haven't watched Squid Game yet, but just finished Kaiji. The first season was amazing! Although the second season was not so amazing... it completely turned into a gambling show. Which isn't bad at first, but they extremely stretched the last 16 of 26 episodes playing 1 single pachinko game. That really killed the pacing and basically the entire show.... but man, that first season was legit legendary!

Damn japan likes youth, infacf they like them do much they want em killed.
The anime is airing right now and so far I’m really enjoying it and the MC is definitely insane
Doubt and deadtube was one of the first few mangas I read, I highly recommend deadtube more tho because it gets crazy
@PJjjj23 Yeah same ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
deadtube sucks. It started off fine but after the Rascal arc it went to shit. its edgy for the sake of being edgy.
Deadtube is gory and gross for the sake of it, nothing wrong with it if that's your cup of tea. But Doubt is awesome.
@@GigaDrillBreak32 yeah I agree but I still read it to see how much worse it could get
Deadtube is pretty good. But it gets boring after a certain point.
Had no idea joey had played the Danganronpa series! Really recommend them if u haven’t played already : )
i'm so happy that joey talked about my fav manga of all times "liar game", I love It so much and not many talk about it. i gave it solid 10/10 as soon as i finished it. ofc I've read/watched many other entries in this video.
Facts. And man hopefully we get an adaptation of Danganronpa V3 some day. It would also be interesting how they adapt that ending chapter in an anime.
The series that instantly come to mind is Kaiji, Alice in Borderland, Liar Game, Darwin's Game and Squirt Game

@@peachiepao942 the same goes to ep 6 of Squid Game.
@@fallenlegend8888 Episode of 6 Squid Game emotionally destroyed me 🥲
Kaiji is definitely better than squid game and other series mentioned even though the artstyle is weird the psychological drama in kaiji is so good and it is very realistic. It is definitely one the underrated seinen animes.
Bro most of the manga in this list are better than squid game. Also liar game is my fav from this list and second kaiji.
@@turbotechdevs7912 liar game so underated
Guys try Real account!! It's pretty much the same as Squid game but instead of adults it's mostly highschoolers. They're forced to play games and of they lose they get killed
If Liar Game and Usogui aren't on this list, I'm going to cry
Kaiji is probably one of the most criminally underrated anime and manga of all time
Yeah, kaiji is soooo good
I wish they adapted the other parts of manga. I really want to watch it
Kaiji is kinda popular in the 90s my dad knows about it
@@iznmodder dude have you read the manga? The next arc is my absolute favorite you don’t even have to know majhong to enjoy it that and one poker please do
@@MashiroShiina your dad probably watches anime like a lot of other people just because your old doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy anime 👍
So glad to see Kaiji, I was watching Squid Game with a friend who isn’t into anime/manga and he was annoyed by me not shutting up about Kaiji 😹
Spoilers:
That scene in Squid Game where they were walking on glass was definitely inspired by Kaiji.
Nah thats from fall guys
@@justinthenoob true
Do you have the source saying this?
Yup
Kaiji steel beam crossing of despair!
my first thought was deadman wonderland, it has games and obstacles courses. but watching squid game did bring me back to my edgy teenage years where I watched shows like these, I was surprised to see a killing game centric show make it this big this many years later.
Joey forgot his favorite “death game” Euphoria lmao
UA-cam would've demonitized him💀
I love ur background Joey, u can
really see this mans culture
Thank you for talking about BTOOOM! It's one of my favorite manga, and I feel like it doesn't get enough recognition
The recent anime "Battle Game in 5 seconds"," High Rise Invasion," & semi death game "Gleipnir" has the potentials to be great but unfortunately falling short by either the weird turn of events or simply the animation quality took a nosedive into low budget swamps.
Real Account has an interesting concept too, making social media into a morbid game
Hey, Joey I don't know if you will see this but on the theme of survival games, I recommend Tomodachi Game and Real Account.
When joey makes more anime content in his second channel than his first channel!
Perhaps tomodachi game or friendship game would be a possible entry into the survival genre.
I was searching for this comment
Joey, you don’t have to tell me what kind of psychological horror I like. I already read and watched them 🙂
i found a manga called "Real Account" to be a great story of this genre.
Joey about Deadman Wanderland: "I still remember how much of an absolute shock the first episode was."
Meanwhile me: I don't even remember what happened in that episode *sweating profusely*.
the whole concept is very similar to TOMODACHI GAME with the whole getting into a death game because of debt stuff
Why no one talks about this manga? Tomodachi game is one of the best in making the unexpected character betrayal.
@@SatochiH fr dude and its also up there in the mal manga lists
I also recommend the manga Though You May Burn to ash. sydsnap made a video on it if your interested. Is another death game series and it also has to do with money so it’s why I recommend it. Also extremely underrated.
I would like to recommend Friends Game (Tomodachi Game) too.
Liar Game is one of my favorite manga/anime/show (excluding the Kr adaptation cause that disappointed me ugh). As already mentioned in the video, I was so amazed at the games they introduced there, the mind tricks they used.... I remember watching/reading it and thinking... HOW?
The Attack on Titan fandom really delivered with the Squid Game hype! The amount of crossover fanarts and music remixes was insane.
confusingly enough, the cast of danganronpa 2 are the stars of the danganronpa 3 anime. the danganronpa v3 characters are technically the only ones not in an anime adaptation.
Ultra Dispair Girls too if you aren't just talking about Mainlines
@@KomaedasOneTrueHope theyre in the dr3 anime
Tomodachi game also takes the money aspect just like in squid game but its not really as brutal where people kill eachother , i think it leans more to the big brain stuff and i definitely recommend it
Haha… that is definitely no longer the case with the latest chapters lol
I just want another season of Kaiji… they did an adaptation of a comedic spin off recently, but man its just not the same…😔
Usogui (The Lie Eater) by Toshio Sako is also a really great reccomendation
Just a warning if anyone reads liar game, i personally really love the manga but a lot of fans including me are really unhappy with the ending
I’d say it was more survival thriller than survival horror
Okay Liar Game is on this list so I'm somewhat happy-
RIP Usogui- You will forever be underated
I highly recommend the Liar Game (Japanese Drama and Movie) and the SPEC series (including the movies). Some of the content might not aged well, but it is definitely a good watch for people looking into similar vein of content.
PS* Toda Erika is in both series \^.^/
I know you said we shouldn't but I really loved the end of Squid Game where we found out it was all a dream the main character had due to the fact he had gotten into a coma from getting a squid stuck in his throat, this is the kind of dark comedy and subversion that surprisingly fit the show very well but you still wouldn't see coming.
Yes, Go Watched Kaiji.
I like both the Anime and also the Live Action, simply because Tatsuya Fujiwara performance.
This specific type of thrillers are some of my favorites! The tug of war scene reminded me of Kaiji 🥰 I also thought of King's Game when watching the show-
I'm gonna add Real Account here
It's a finished manga where social media became a death game platform, sort of battle royale i guess. Fricking intense, the story is pretty good and the mc is badass. Got some fan services too.
Heard the news that it's going to get a live-action adaptation years ago, though i haven't heard anything about it ever since.
i won't even lie real account is my guilty pleasure i have read it every year since the first time i read it lmaooo!
I'm so happy people keep talking about liar game.
It got overshadowed by kaiji in other reviews.
Ikr?! Liar game is so good and people are finally talking about it
When I watched Squid Game, I thought it will be like Liar Game but deadly.
Wow this Joey guy talks about anime way more than The Anime Man
Dead tube? This is a MASTERCLASS
Amen
Something interesting about the concept of kami sama no iutori ni is that its author's new series is very much using the survival and human loss of decency is the hardest of situations into a sports manga. I'm not that into football but Blue Lock is pretty fun to read
There is also one survival game but a bit different called real account. This one is about people who uses a popular social media account called real account that was suddenly drag into the digital world leaving their body in the real world. If they died in the game they also died in real life. I recommend checking this out if you really have nothing to do. This is quite mid but still pretty good nonetheless
good to know that joey knows battle royal 2000 which I think really started the death game genre
There's also Real Account, and well I don't know if this counts as a 'survival game'-like, but Tenkuu Shinpan was also thrilling
im so glad u talked abt kamisama no iutoori/ni i genuinely loved tht manga but nobody i knew ever read it so i could never talk abt it w/ anyone ;_;
Joey, youtubes now asking us questions like what we rate this video out of 5 stars, and how we felt about it. I just want you to know I put that this video was life changing.
this is the type of content i missed from joeys main channel
i almost got emotional when i see danganronpa first on the list and when he said his fav danganronpa game is the second one lol im that much obsessed with dnganronpa
HELL yeah kaiji absolutely deserves more attention, thanks so much joey
Its impressive just how much this show blew up. Not only is it the most popular Netflix show of all time but its not even a close 2nd. Its ahead by tens of millions of viewers haha.
But damn it deserves its time in the light, I thought it was great.
Real Account is another manga that has a similar premise to kaiji with all the games and death penalties.
Joey talking about 'Doubt'??? My happiness is immeasurable :D
Liars Game is acctually my most favourite manga of all time!
How does no one talks about Usogui when it's so GOOD
Wasn't mentioned, but I would also add Usogui The Lie Eater.
Gantz was one of my favorite as well when it comes to survival horror games.
He is probably confusing V3 with the anime danganronpa 3 (despair and future arcs)
first thing i would recommend to anyone who liked squid game is obviously liar game...but here are some other manga that were not mentioned in the video:
- Limit (survival, similar to books like animal farm or lord of the flies just in manga form - 6 volumes)
- SCM (mindgames, not necessarily the participants lifes at stake, but entertaining nevertheless - 10 volumes)
- Judge and Secret (both series from the same author as doubt and therefore very similar - 6 and 3 volumes)
- Werewolf game (more or less based on the concept of the cardgame...you know how it works! who may live and who has to die, a trial decides - 3 volumes and 2 spin of volumes)
than there are more series like corpse party, akuma no riddle or high rise invasion, which i found not outstandingly good, but an alright read for in between
At the end of squid game you witness a squid turning into a game
