    I do not think it is fair to call this work a video Rod. I'd call it a short film. Excellent production values and very nicely finished. It also does not hurt to have a fishing partner with the brightest smile in fishing.

      Thanks. We've talked about collaborations quite often actually. A couple of years ago BlacktipH wanted us to come down, but the timing just didn't work out. :) My situation is a little different to all the other fast growing channels with younger guys right now. They have all the opportunities to travel and feature exciting content. With two kids at home, I'm more tied down by time and finance, so can't commit to those ideas. Not an excuse, but it's the reality and and I'll have to be satisfied with our current growth for now.

    Newbie here, just started fishing March 2020. I'm catching to eat, well.... For a lot of fun too. What I can't figure out is why you let some fish go and keep others. How do you know what fish to keep and eat? Generally, I let the smaller ones go.

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  4 роки тому +2

      Hi Sylvia, thanks for the message and good question. These fish were released because only catch and release is allowed for this river system. Every river, lake, sea has its own regulations when it comes to what you can fish for, keep, etc. The best way to find out is by accessing the regulations on the government's websites.
      So when it comes to what size is best for keeping to ensure sustainability, it actually depends on the species. For the most part, it is in fact better to keep the smaller ones than the bigger ones. The biggest fish, especially for long living species such as rockfish, are the breeders. These fish are important when it comes to recruitment of the populations. For salmon, etc, keeping ones that are average in size is also better than keeping the biggest, or the smaller ones, because these are often in much higher abundance.
      If you are in BC and have more questions on regulations etc, you are welcome to message me through our Facebook page facebook.com/fishingwithrod and I can help you out from there.

    This video is over 5 yrs old but I would love to find out how to get to this spot where you guys were slaying coho! I've only caught coho on the Vedder River in Chilliwack and I now live in Chemainus and want to start up fishing here but need a few hints PLEASE!

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  2 роки тому

      Robert, most of the river systems which drain out of the West Coast of Vancouver Island have the potential to produce specimens like these. What makes these fish stand out in comparison to the Vedder fish isn't really the size, but the fact that they are only 1km or less from the ocean. This makes their fight way more intense. Also, the river system shown in this video has not had a good coho return since this was filmed actually., and unfortunately.

      @@FishingwithRod thanks so much for the reply. Last question I have is that I used the float system with wool to catch coho on the Vedder, would I use the same set up here on the island for coho?

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  2 роки тому +1

      It really depends on the type of water you are fishing at. If it is slow or stagnant, then lures would be the method to go with. Coho love chasing down spoons, spinners and jigs.

    Hi Rod, can you tell us your line set up? Braid or mono and lb test? Also using any leader or swivels? Thanks

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  8 років тому +1

      Hi Jeff, with my spinning reel for this fishery, I spool my Shimano Sustain 2500FG with 15lb test PowerPro braided for main, which is enough to handle any coho salmon, as well as chum salmon and some chinook salmon. At the end of my main, I tie about 4 to 6 feet of Seaguar Flurocarbon to it as my leader. I usually use 10 or 12lb test for coho. Heavier if I need to for bigger fish. The knot I use from the braided main to fluro leader is an improved Albright. I then tie the spoon to the leader.

      There are two nets being used in this video. One is a Moby, I'm not totally sure which model it is. The other one is a Catch and release net made by Gibbs Delta. It's categorized as a trout catch and release net but I've used it for pink and coho salmon for many years now.

    Hey Rod, I love your videos! I know you've mentioned that you guys use 2500s reels. In this case what kind of braid you guys are using and how much do you think you have it on the spool? Thanks

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  7 років тому

      I use 15lb test PowerPro, and absolutely love it. :) I spool a few layers of 10lb test Maxima Ultragreen mono on the bottom of the spool as recommended, then the PowerPro. I'm not sure exactly how much is on there, but I spool it to the top, but not overspooling. I spooled this particular back in spring 2014, and the same line is still working flawlessly.

    • @JJhuang42
      @JJhuang42 7 років тому

      Hey Rod, thank you very much for the reply! I also live in Vancouver and love your videos. The reason that I am asking is that I am planning to do some jigging for cohos and chums for this years season. I just got a 8'6 rod with a 3000 reel. I was thinking of spooling 30lb braid in white or multi-color. With that in mind, do you think it will be over killed? Also, although I am going to use flourocarbon as leader, do you think white, multi-color or even chartreuse line will effect the hook-up rate? Sorry for the long post and thank you again for your reply.

      30lb braid would be an overkill, 15lb test is more than enough. 20lb if you want. With my 15lb it has worked great for coho, chum and even the odd chinook salmon. For fluoro leader, we use Seaguar, 10 or 12lb test, about 6 feet of it at the end of the braid. Actually, there is a video tutorial coming out in about two weeks from now that talks about this specifically.

      Oh I see. I think I will down size to 20lb then. Thank you very much again, and I am looking forward to that future video!

      Hi James, the rod is 9' long, rated 6 to 10lb, Shimano Clarus CSS90ML2B. The reels are Shimano 2500s, mine is a Sustain, while Kitty's using a Stradic Ci4+.
