I'm convinced that running shoe stores get wider margins from both Hoka and ON. Every time I walk into a store, I see half the customers trying on Hokas and the other half trying ON. Do your homework, people. I'm not a Hoka person, but I know someone who is, and I'll share this with her. Cheers, Chris.

“Core” running stores definitely push Brooks and Hoka via incentives. On has the athlesiure and pop culture thing out of the pandemic. Hoka has the same for Gen Z for casual wear.
Two brands that are milking the popularity and investment for all it’s worth.

Good to see we both have this one, Rebel v4 and Novablast 4. Now you just need the Speed 4 :) Having now done my "sort of" first impressions vids on the Rebel v4 and Mach 6 I finding some "sort of" similarities. OK for my narrow feet the Mach 6 is "on paper" a far better fit as the Rebel v4 is very very wide but I do find Hoka's fit a bit odd as you say and "torpedo" like. I did get two blood blisters on side of my right foot after first run in the Mach 6 but now I think about it could actually from wearing the Invincible 1 the previous day which had not for ages and had been a real blister fest shoe. Overall though agree these shoes are sort of something and nothing for me. For sessions/tempo runs I will reach for a "proper" super shoe and one of my large "fleet" of Vaporflys is always a goto. Both these Mach 6 and Rebel v4 have that 5-6 mm "lower" drop which I struggle with a bit as I find deeper into a run that drop starts to feel a bit "slappy" for me. Both the midsoles are neither soft nor firm - well by modern day standards. I think I need more time in both to see which prefer. It "ought" to be the Mach 6 purely on fit but I didn't find either "easy" to run fast in but I guess I want this type of shoe for typical hour or so easy/steady runs on non session days when if I feel good might push the pace/effort a bit. Agree though for a "real" plod the Novablast 4 is the more obvious choice and, blisters aside, if I am really battered it is either Invincible or a rest day. It could just be I revert back to the Speeds for my light everyday option but was keen to try something a bit different and maybe there is some training effect varying drops in shoes that we use.

I don't have a limit or a specific mark I set. As soon as the shoe feels flat or it's giving my feet or legs aches or pains that it didn't before I will usually turn the shoe into a casual shoe or it goes into the donation bag. I'm ruthless with that, I don't think huge mileage in a shoe is a badge of honor, I protect my body first.

One of the issues with HOKA here in Australia is that they're exorbitantly expensive. For example, compared to the RRP for the Velocity Nitro 3 of AU$180, the Mach 6 is AU$260! Compare that to the US where the difference between the two shoes is $5 ($135 v $140). In any case, thanks for another great in-depth review. I'm on the lookout for an everyday daily trainer and by the sound of it the VN3 will do a better job at that!

I've got 39 miles in the Mach 6 so far and I'm enjoying it as a very smooth, bouncy, lightweight trainer. I'll definitely be paying attention to the durability.
I wonder how it will compare to the Brooks Hyperion 2, with the DNA Flash v2. The Hyperion Max has been quite durable so far and also has a nice rockered ride.

    • @SagasuRunning

Actually, I think DNA Loft v3 is the better comparison. I actually found the a Mach 6 to be a fast Ghost Max… but I prefer the fit and feel of the Ghost Max (I also prefer DNA aloft v2 form). i have something unrelated question to shoes but to running in general
Of course this question I had after I tried to find online some answers but unable to.
I am fairly new to seriously running, yes i used to run everyday but only for 5k, not marathon specific training.
However, I love to run at speed and usually when I wanna run speed I will use the treadmill at about 13km/h , which is considered fast for me.
I am at the point of doing speed work everyday almost like racing 5k everyday wirh 4% incline although on a treadmill cause i can adjust the speed, planning on getting a run watch.
The question is, is it okay to do that? Im 31 yrs old 55kg. Sometimes i told my self not to run fast but i cant help it.
Another question is , what is a good practice for fairly new to to the concept of best practices in running?
Does speed work everyday can cause us harm? Specifically I dont have an objective, just love running fast pace.

    • @SagasuRunning
      @SagasuRunning  2 місяці тому

To your does question… yes speed work everyday can cause harm. Over training, fatigue, stress fractures, etc… not a good idea.
To your second question (and it explains the first). Google or UA-cam search the following “80/20 running”… you’ll find a lot of information as to why you don’t want to be running hard daily as well as how to effectively structure your running practice. At least the basics.

Just bought some Mach 5s. Saw them on offer at £70 and decided to take the plunge. Loved them on the first run at Tempo pace. Second run went for a Z2 longer run, which was fine at first, but they seemed to lose cushioning at about 8 miles, as you say. Still very happy with them, but will use them in my rotation within that limitation. Need to find a Z1/Z2 shoe for 10-20 mile runs. Asics NB4 or Nimbus 25? The Nimbus is cheaper in the Easter sale, but I prefer lighter shoes, and would the Nimbus be too hot in the 30-40C temps in Bangkok? Or for slightly more the Saucony Triumph 21; I love my Tempus, which are getting a little tired now.

No, I won’t be covering the Rebel v4… because I’m not a fan of what NB is currently doing and I can’t find a nonwide version here in Taiwan. I don’t have alot of good things to say about NB in 2024, so I’m not.
I live in Taipei, Taiwan where it is rather hot all the time, sub tropical. I’ve run extensively in the Novablast 4 in hot/wet conditions and see no issue with the upper for hot weather. It’s fine. It’s the best upper of the three shoes you are looking at. For as much stack as is in the NB4 you surprisingly get some ground feel. It would be my recommendation from your list.
