  • Stuart Skinner was pulled in Game 3 after allowing four goals on 15 shots through two periods. Should the Oilers consider sitting Skinner for Game 4 now that they trail the Canucks in the series? Bruce Boudreau weighs in during Monday's Talking Point.

Pickard for sure! Skinner is great, but he loses confidence. Skinner should have been pulled and Pickard put in the start of the second period. The game would have likely had a very different outcome last night.

It’s tempting to say that because the Oilers have yet to lose consecutive games during their current playoff series, Coach Knoblauch should start Skinner for game 4. After all, Sheldon Keefe, then the head coach of the Leafs, pulled Ilya Samsonov during the second intermission of game four of the recent Leafs-Bruins playoff series, with that goalie having allowed multiple ugly goals in that game and the previous one, but having allowed 2 goals in total in the second game of that series (that the Leafs had won 3-2 in regulation).
Skinner, in each game he’s played during the Oilers-Canucks series, has allowed at least 3 goals and on AVERAGE has allowed 4/game. As he has faced 58 shots, he has saved not even 80% of them and in no game has he saved even 85%.
I dunno whether Knoblauch will or won’t start Skinner for game 4 although the head coach has much to think about considering also that the Oilers, in each game of that series, have thrown defence under the bus.

How bad is it? Skinner not only has the worst numbers of any netminder to start a game in Oilers postseason history. But he is also the NHL’s worst playoff performer in the salary cap era by a sizable margin. Of all 69 goalies since 2005 with at least 15 playoff appearances, Skinner ranks dead last in save percentage with an .881 mark in 20 games. He’s worse than Kari Lehtonen’s .887 (19 games) and Nikolai Khabibulin’s .898 (15 games) - and that’s not a small sample size.

I agree with this take as well. Also, if they start Skinner and Oilers lose they'll be down 3-1 in the series. It's hard for a coach to not start with your main guy for an elimination game at which point I believe Skinner would crumble. Starting with Pickard is a better option cause if he wins convincingly you can keep playing him for the series, if he doesn't work out you can switch back and hope Skinner finds some desperation. Game 4 is the time to make this change, harder to do in elimination scenarios.

The Oilers and also every other teams need goalies who run hot and brutal focused in playoffs, goalies who carry their team on a long run. Most of this goalies are not the best in the regular season, but they are in the play the goalie which makes the difference. Last time season Gustafson lost games for the Bruins with silly mistakes, but in the regular season he was the goalie with the best numbers. On the other side grubauer won for the kraken the series against the avalanche.... And grubauer always plays top in playoffs, he already had runs till the finals with other teams. This are the goalies a top team needs! Skinner hasn't the expert, he is still young and has to learn a lot. At the moment he is a solid backup under ore, not more. Skinner has the NHL’s worst playoff performer in the salary cap era by a sizable margin. Of all 69 goalies since 2005 with at least 15 playoff appearances, Skinner ranks dead last in save percentage with an .881 mark in 20 games. He’s worse than Kari Lehtonen’s .887 (19 games) and Nikolai Khabibulin’s .898 (15 games)
Gee. I wonder if Edmonton should make a change?

Skinner should be the starter on an AHL club not an actual NHL team. His stats are embarrassing and the fact that Oilers fans think they are cup worthy fail to realize you don't get close without goaltending. Connor can't outscore all the easy five holes and odd angle shots. Those goals just deflate a team's morale. I'd start the zamboni driver if I were an Oil coach LOL.
