  • Korone accidentally mentioned the cost of her rent while talking about what wish she would make in the Madoka Magica world.
    Not gonna lie, that's insanely low by US standards, especially living in/near the city.

    Doesn't she live near Tokyo? If so, 80,000 yen is a bit of a steal! I live in Tokyo and pay 90,000 yen/month, and I honestly feel like I'm getting a bargain at that price, as my apartment is reasonably sized, comfortable, well maintained, and in a superb location. If Korone's paying a cool 10,000 less than me, she's gotta either be in a hell of a small apartment, or somewhere in the outskirts of Tokyo -- maybe Nishi-Tokyo, or Nerima, or Saitama.

My 90k apartment (which is also a "mansion," but mansion just means apartment building, so yeah...) is 31 square meters -- small, but the space is extremely well-optimized, so it doesn't FEEL all that small. Additionally, like I said, it's very well-maintained, and it's right in the heart of Kichijoji, so the location really couldn't be better.
      EDIT: Ah, I had to look up where Yomiuriland-mae was -- that's Kawasaki, so it makes sense you'd get a pretty cheap apartment there. Very accessible to Tokyo, but not IN Tokyo, so yeah... good get, that!
      My first year in Japan, I had an apartment in Tsukubamirai, Ibaraki, which is also reeeeelatively accessible to Tokyo (I could get to Akihabara in about 45 minutes by train, though it was a relatively expensive ride on two non-JR lines), and my rent there was 49,000 yen/month for an absolutely MASSIVE apartment (57 square meters, if I recall correctly). And why is everybody so exited about what seems like fairly decent costs for a big city?

    • @fighterman4812
      @fighterman4812 2 роки тому +3

      Because that's an absolute steal of a deal when compared to rent in the states, which has been rising explosively. A 1-bed, 1-bath apartment in my area costs over twice that much. Apartments in the state capital (Salt Lake), and nearby state capitals run you at least $1,500.
      This wasn't nearly this bad a few years ago. My parents got a contract for renting a 3,500 sq ft house (big family, so all that space is used lol) a few years back and fixed the rent at ~1,800 per month. Nowadays that's about the price of a two-bedroom apartment in the area. It's absolutely insane.
      The reason, as far as I'm aware, is that people from big cities are moving out to more rural areas due to increased prevalence of work from home, which, in turn, raises prices there. It's a bad situation all-around, because people in those areas who weren't relatively well-off suddenly find themselves struggling to pay rent, and the best solution is...you guessed it, move elsewhere in the country where rent isn't as expensive, which becomes a vicious cycle. And there just isn't enough housing to go around, so prices stay high.
      So, people are elated to hear that things aren't this bad everywhere, I would guess. It gives some hope to a bleak situation.

    Gotta say 80k yen aint all to bad to live in tokyo (from my persective in the US). Lots of 1bed apartments around here will minimum be 700$ in a small nothing to do town. Easily to 1500-2500$ in a bigger city equivalent to tokyo.
    Then again the key payment, deposit, and all that extra junk in getting a place in japan makes it significantly tough at the start where in the US its usually the rent plus deposit.
