  • Panasonic GH5 with 7-14mm using meikon waterproof housing and 6" dome port. Recorded in 8bit 4k 60fps editing and color grading with Final cut pro.
I put this video together using footage that I shot during our week-long dive trip with Matava eco-resort on Kadavu Island Fiji. We were the only dive boat on the entire Great Astrolabe reef! The coral and marine life were extremely healthy and made for spectacular diving. This was my first time shooting with a proper camera underwater (previously I've used GoPros) and I definitely learned a lot but was overall really pleased with the results from my setup. I was pretty happy with the results from the GH5 although colors straight out of the camera weren't the best and required some correction in post. I always used a custom white balance with a piece of white sand underwater. The 4K 60fps which I used 99% of the time was awesome to have and allowed me to slow down some shots for a smooth look.
Overall the meikon housing worked pretty well especially considering that it's about 1/3 the price of other housing. I did have a few issues with it: The first was fogging. We had pretty unfortunate weather most of the week with quite a bit of rain and storms and the humidity made it difficult to dry out my camera housing once I got a few drops of water in it. As my camera was left on throughout the dives it would begin to heat up inside the housing causing the dome port to fog. I used some silica gel bags inside which helped a little. The second issue is how easily the dome port scratches which led to some ugly marks in my footage. The last issue is the dome port combined with the wide-angle lens led to blurriness on the edges of the footage. I will be experimenting with the flat port to see if that leads to better results. Overall a good learning experience and I'm definitely hooked on shooting underwater video.
